For this Redux challenge I chose to revisit Glass. This is part of a small glass paperweight that I created in Deadwood Wyoming at a studio called Mind Blown ( www.mindblownstudio.com/services.html) while on Vacation. it was Hot but such a fun experience! I've used this little paperweight before in photos so I wanted to change it up a bit and so I added some red shiny paper to the background and lit it with a flashlight. 4. Der Umbau

Calatrava hat das äußere Erscheinungsbild des denkmalgeschützten Institutsgebäudes weitgehend unverändert belassen. Die Aufstockung der beiden niedrigen Gebäudeflügel, die sich formal an den bestehenden Dachflächen orientiert, erfolgte als Stahl-Glas-Leichtbaukonstruktion, die sich deutlich als moderne Ergänzung vom historischen Gebäude absetzt. Durch die Überbauung des Innenhofes ergibt sich eine größere Energieeffizienz, denn der bisherige Wärmeenergieverbrauch kann heruntergefahren und durch die Tageslichtnutzung der Stromverbrauch reduziert werden.

Die Bibliothek setzte Calatrava als Stahlkonstruktion in den 720 m² großen Innenhof des Institutsgebäude, verbunden mit den beiden Geschossen der Aufstockung. Der Einbau durfte die Untergeschosse und das Erdgeschoss nicht verschatten, und daher wählte der Architekt eine Tragkonstruktion, mit der die Lesesaalgalerien vom Altbau losgelöst sind und die bestehende Innenhoffassade nur punktuell an den Auflagern berühren. Da der Einbau mit linsenförmigem Grundriss gestaltet wurde, blieb durch die Freiräume die natürliche Belichtung der Korridore im Altbau erhalten. Die Zahl der Auflager ist auf insgesamt fünf reduziert, von denen nur zwei optisch als Stützen im Erdgeschoss in Erscheinung treten. Die sechs geschwungenen Stahlgalerien sind von einer ovalen Glaskuppel überdeckt, die dem linsenförmigen Grundriss des Lichthofes folgt. Die Haupttragkonstruktion der Kuppel ist der mittig verlaufende Kastenträger, an welchen Querrippen geschweißt sind, die skelettartig den Innenhof überspannen. Unterhalb des "Gürteltierrückens" der Kuppel liegt eine hydraulisch gesteuerte, als Lamellenvorhang gestaltete Beschattungsanlage, die das einfallende Sonnenlicht kontrolliert. Die Beschattungskonstruktion fungiert auch als Akustikelement und wirkt zudem als bewegliche Raumskulptur. Insgesamt brachte die Erweiterung einen Flächenzuwachs von rund 4.800 m². Die Gesamtkosten des Projekts beliefen sich auf fast 50 Millionen Schweizer Franken.

5. Die Bibliothek

Der Benutzer betritt die Bibliothek durch den neu geschaffenen Eingang auf der Rückseite des Gebäudes, passiert dann die Schließfächer und kommt in die Eingangsschleuse. Unmittelbar danach kann er, im Freiraum des über 30 Meter hohen Lichthofes stehend, das neue Raumerlebnis auf sich wirken lassen. Rund um ihn erheben sich gestaffelt die geschwungenen Lesesaalgalerien, die mit warm leuchtenden Ahorn-Sprossen verkleidet sind. Durch die Fahrt mit dem Lift in einem der zwei gläsernen Aufzugsröhren, die in die Schnittpunkte der beiden Galerieschenkel platziert sind, so dass sich das ganze Lichtauge überblicken lässt, wird der Überraschungseffekt noch eindrucksvoller. Die elegant geschwungene "Balkonanlage" aus Stahl wird durch die sechs Geschosse hindurchgeführt, wobei der an den Scheitelpunkten hinreichend bemessene Abstand der beiden Galerieschenkel ein angenehmes Raumgefühl vermittelt. Alle Leseplätze auf den sechs Galerien orientieren sich als Einzelarbeitsplätze zum zentralen Luftraum und der natürlichen Beleuchtung hin. Auch Gruppenarbeitsplätze wurden eingeplant. Die Bücherstellflächen befinden sich gleichfalls auf den Galerien, sie wurden in die bestehenden Aussparungen zwischen den beiden Treppenhäusern des Altbaus eingefügt, und außerdem sind die Bücherregale in den Brückenträgern integriert. Die Fachliteratur befindet sich somit in der Nähe der Arbeitsplätze. Die Regale (insgesamt ca. 5.000 laufende Regalmeter) können die Kollektion im Umfang von rund 150.000 Bänden - die zweitgrößte juristischen Bibliothek der Schweiz - in vollem Umfang aufnehmen. Auf jeder Galerie sind zudem PCs für die Katalogabfrage aufgestellt (seit 1991 werden die Bestände elektronisch erfasst, seit 1999 mit Aleph), für die Kopierer sind jeweils kleinere Raume vorgesehen.

Calatravas elegante Konstruktion wurde 2003 als wirkungsvolles Beispiel für die Formbarkeit und Ausdrucksstärke von Stahl und zugleich als Beitrag zu energetisch richtigem Bauen mit dem Europäischen Stahlbaupreis ausgezeichnet. Mit der gelungenen Kombination aus Licht, Form und Raum hat die Bibliothek eine Attraktivität erlangt, die die Fakultät im Zeichen eines zunehmenden Wettbewerbs um Studierende nun als Bonus vorweisen kann.
