The BristleBot is a vibrobot with an agenda.

It's built with a vibrating pager motor and the busines end of a toothbrush that has slanted bristles.

Note the gentle inward curve at the hilt of the blade, and the shine off the edge.

step 12: finish arm holes, neck, and bottom

turn the raw edges of the arm hole to the back side of the belly piece (fleece is the same front & back, so pick which is back and stick with the decision) and sew them down using a regular straight stitch. do the same for the neck opening (the area between the two points on your pattern piece where the collar of your shirt stopped), and the bottom edge.

step 13: pin down yarn into the shape you want on the belly

you can figure out if you're a girl or a boy crab. pin down yarn in the appropriate shape on the front of your belly. i'm showing here how to make a girl.

This is where I was working out the dimensions. Some of the numbers are in pixels (measured from a digital photo of a Lego minifig head) and the rest are in inches.

Here's the whole process as a video.

I hope you can make out what I'm doing, since I was paying more attention to the sewing than the filming of it.

Flickr seems to have clipped the very end of the the video, you can see the whole thing on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIBAGY5eOFk

Interesting thought - a restaurant hires people who need a poster to remind them of the steps involved in hand washing.

Crappy shot, but I *was* in the men's room.

Useful for tourists on a budget and also for those who prefer the taste of authentic Indian living. Since India has moved forward so rapidly this style of eliminating human body waste is probably becoming scarcer by the day.

The Sony PSP is such a powerful portable device, it practically screams to do more than just gaming. Last year, I wrote "Ten Cool Things to do with your Sony PSP", which eventually became one of my most popular articles on this blog. Since it’s been about a year, it’s time for a major update. Without further ado, here are five more cool things you can do with your PSP...

Another howto for my LUG.

I got a question about the bib cake I recently made. I'll try to explain how easy it was to make it :-) I am using mmf and ganache in this case, but I guess it will work with sugarpaste and buttercream as well :-)

Bake and fill your cake (round and oval shape will also work for this cake design). Cut a desired shape using a paper template (What a great way to get some cake for yourself and your family :-)) Cover your cake in ganache/buttercream and let it chill.

Con este tutorial aprenderemos a hacer una serie de cuentas redondas en degradado de dos colores y cómo hornearlas sin que se deformen.

step 17: put it together

place the outsides of both body pieces facing each other so that the wrong sides are facing out. sew together using a regular straight stitch all the way from neck edge to the bottom side edge on each side. turn the costume right side out, using closed scissors or a spoon handle to pop the tips all the way out.

optionally, you can use plastic-coated wire (found cheaply in spools at the hardware store) to make the shape stand out stiffer. cut 2 lengths of wire, one to fit along the edge of each side. bend into shape and insert into the inside of the body. sew all the way through the outside (body is turned right side out, you're sewing from front straight through to back) of the costume all the way around the edges, so that you make a channel trapping the wire in place inside.

Now you've got all the blue hexagons sewn to the white hexagons, all around your quilt, and the blue hexagon edges all secured to each other. Your quilt top should already have all its paper templates removed, since you've already quilted it. So, now you can remove the paper templates from about ~15 blue hexagons. And then proceed with the next steps.

step 24: make closures for the wrist

i sewed a pair of buttons on my claws, with short elastic loops on the other side (this makes them adjustable if i have no shirt underneath, or a bulky sweatshirt to button them over). for my boyfriend's claws, he wanted velcro instead - your choice - and his hand loop is made out of red fleece instead of elastic.

either way, using a loop over the palm of your hand instead of wearing claw mittens means you can pick up food or drinks with your hand instead of a clumsy glove. and also either way, you'll need a button or hook to attach the length of yarn from the attached legs to your claws.

the final product, female crab on the left, male crab on the right.

remember we're looking like cooked crabs here, red on back and cream on the belly. you can go with bright fun tropical colors if you want to be some other kind of crab, or go with a brown back /cream front/blue leg combo to look like a real live blue crab.

other variations: make your pattern piece much longer and without shoulder points, add a tail to the bottom back end - now you're a lobster. make the front and back rounded, and make a big snail shell out of a cardboard box or backpack to attach on back, and now you're a hermit crab

XD

step 7: make joints in the arms

refer back to that starter photo we had, and you'll notice that blue crabs have 4 segments in each of their walking legs. massage the stuffing a little out of the way of where you want each joint, and tie a length of yarn down tightly to create the joints in the legs.

I've been stressed at work while my dissertation progress lingered. Supervisor sends out the following email...

Notice to all employees:

Due to the hard economic times and otherwise depressing state of the world today, all personnel will now be required to at least look happy while working.

Company-approved supplies will be provided to each employee at little or no cost.

- Workloads getting to you?

- Feeling stressed?

- Too many priorities and assignments?

Here is the new low-cost, company-approved solution to cope with multiple priorities and assignments!

Each employee will be supplied 2 paper clips and rubber bands. (See Fig 1 above)

Construction steps of my standing desk

There is not much in life that cannot be made better by the judicious application of a Dremel tool. For this job, I decided that a grinding wheel would do the job and, after a little practice on the broken money clip, I ground off most of the support vanes to leave a flat surface. The original vane is still visible on the right.

There were two versions of credit card insert in the package Mike sent. The insert on the right has two indentations to accommodate the support pegs moulded into the shell on the left. These pegs do basically the same job as the vanes on the insert - stabilizing the structure of the Jimi™ when it is closed so it does not flex. Note that if the inserts are switched, the pegs have nowhere to go and will bend if forced.

step 25: head gear

this step is optional, and the costume is pretty cute without it. things look more complete if you're wearing something on your head, though. here, i've wrapped 2 lengths of wire around a regular plain flat headband, covered the wire with red fleece (cut out a long slender rectangle with a rounded end, sew the edges together, turn right side out, and pull down over the wire), and hot-glued googly eyes to the ends. bend the wires to whatever shape you like.

other options would be to put googly eyes on a red beanie cap, put long hair into wire-stiffened pippi-longstalking-type pigtail braids with googly-eye ends, or purchase a crab costume hat.

step 9: shape the body pattern

going back to that starter picture, you see that crabs have points on their shell out over their claw arms - your body pattern will need that same shape. draw it several times with a marker until you feel you've gotten the contour you want, then cut it out.
