The sea howl
And the sea yelp, are different voices
Often together heard: the whine in the rigging,
The menace and caress of wave that breaks on water,
The distant rote in the granite teeth,
And the wailing warning from the approaching headland
Are all sea voices, and the heaving groaner
Rounded homewards, and the seagull:
And under the oppression of the silent fog
The tolling bell
Measures time not our time, rung by the unhurried
Ground swell, a time
Older than the time of chronometers, older
Than time counted by anxious worried women
Lying awake, calculating the future,
Trying to unweave, unwind, unravel
And piece together the past and the future,
Between midnight and dawn, when the past is all deception,
The future futureless, before the morning watch
When time stops and time is never ending;
And the ground swell, that is and was from the beginning,
Clangs
The bell.
This sea-stack at Bandon beach is often mistakenly thought to be the famous 'Wizard's Hat', which is actually a little further south on the beach. This one is called 'Howling Dog', and is one of the stacks that are part of the native American legend of Face Rock. Viewed from the opposite side, this rock resembles a dog howling.

Legend from the Nah-So-Mah Tribe has it that the beautiful Indian princess Ewanua was visiting tribes on the coast with her father, Chief Siskiyou, and in celebration of their visit, a great potlatch took place.
The local tribes were in great fear of Seatka, the evil spirit of the ocean, but Ewanua and those in her tribe, who lived in the mountains, were not afraid.
After the feast, while others lay sleeping, Ewanua carried her dog, Komax, and her cat and kittens in a basket and wandered down to the ocean.
She danced and played with delight, and soon placed her pets in their basket on the beach and swam into the ocean, far from shore. Unaware of any danger, she was suddenly grabbed by a fearsome creature that came out of the water.
Komax, knowing his mistress was in danger, swam out to her with the basket in his mouth and bit Seatka. Howling with rage, the monster kicked off the dog and threw the cat and kittens far out to sea. He tried to get the princess to look at him, but she refused, knowing his power was in his eyes.
Now, the beautiful Ewanua lies in the ocean, looking skyward, refusing to look at Seatka, who sits nearby. Her beloved Komax and her cat and kittens lie to the west, waiting in vain for their mistress to arise.
Yucatan Howler Monkey

I had seen many howler monkeys before, and heard many howler monkeys before, but this was the first time that I actually SAW howlers HOWLING. It is a visceral experience. Your brain tells you that you are probably safe, but your gut tells you something very different.
These monkeys roam free and are protected by the community of residents that have promised to keep them safe. Imagine that! Belize is a pretty cooled out place.

Wookie isn't much of a barker, but when he is playing and gets excited he makes the cutest half howl - half bark that comes out like "woo woo woo".
This was the moon above the Exhibition Grounds on the night of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games torch relay celebration in Prince George. It reminded me of a cold eye keeping watch over the proceedings.
