We went to Hoverfly after a series of visits to model shops looking for remote/radio controlled cars - a long term research project for birthdays and Christmas a long time off. We were redirected and filtered here by friendly men in shops stuffed to the gunnels with eccentric toys from all over the world. The shop has been open just over six months, it's full of pretty wonderful things that and boys and dads will LOVE. Trevor's the owner, incredibly helpful, friendly and accommodating. A genuine star. Go there and BUY STUFF!

The hoverfly Epistrophe eligans can be quite variable in the extent of the yellow striping on its abdomen, some specimens, particularly males, being nearly all black; however the overall pattern is usually similar.

It is an early Spring species, being seen from March to August, and peaking in May.

It is widespread throughout most of Britain though more scarce in the north.

It can be seen along hot, sunny woodland edges and hedgerows, and favours Blackthorn and Hawthorn.

Hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus on variagated rhododendron leaf

I just moved recently. The new place is by the main road. I underestimated the traffic of Shanghai, and now I am suffering from sleeplessness due to the sounds from the horns and brakes. (Drivers here use their horns and brakes mercilessly.)

Today, I tried the airconditioner of my place since it is a bloody 34 deg, and it was making as much noise as the traffic below. I wonder how I am going to survive the summer...

P.S: I have a series of shots of this little flying creature making love to my camera last sunday. Pls bear with me for a while till I finish posting its pics on flickr.

Hoverfly | Petaling jaya - Jul 24th at the back of our office.

This hoverfly has a wasp-like body. I'm not sure of it's proper name. We have quite a few different types of hoverflies in our garden.

This one was resting on the tip of a palm frond.
