Was enjoying the hot day while out searching around with my camera & stumbled upon this litle pond. Was hoping for some water dwellers to photograph...no luck, so opted for a shot of the row of poplars lining the swampy pond. A practice shot never hurts. =)

Tri-colored Heron ~ in the wild ~ Florida Wetlands U.S.A.

Summer 2016 ~ South Florida ~ Palm Beach County

***********************************************************************************

The Tricolored or Louisiana Heron does not swim but wades in deep water. Audubon called this bird "Lady of the Water" because of its grace and beauty. It resembles the Great Blue Heron but is much smaller and more delicate. Its white belly clearly distinguishes it from all other Herons. It strides briskly through the water, sometimes running after fish and catching them with a thrust of the bill. This action is so fast that it can only be caught with a shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second! Their chicks have a reddish coat but turn blue with age.

The name Louisiana Heron is very misleading because it also lives in coastal states from North Carolina to Texas, and especially in Florida.

Yes, faces only a mother could love! Their tri-colored

heron mother is beautiful, but when they hatched I'm

quite sure she said; "Whoa... they are not mine!" LOL

Young Rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) feeling the Perth summer heat enough to brave a drink from my pond despite the bronze owl statue right behind him!

Quite happy with the sharpness here, given I had to quickly sneak into my study to get the camera rig then sneak back and handhold the big Sigma Sport at 600mm and at 1/200

Hanging out with the family making sand sculptures at New Bufflalo, Lake Michigan.

Thought I'd get out into the South Florida Wetlands... had been a little while. We are so lucky to see so many amazing species! On any given morning I can see many different birds right in my own backyard. One of my favorites is the Tri-colored Heron. What a life it has. Starts out as an ugly little thing, turns into a reddish juvenile, and ends up a beautiful blue adult. Three really different stages. Above is a young juvenile testing his new wings with short flights. He's only a few months old.

At this early stage he starts acting and feeling like... a young prince!
