Yes, this unusual flower is called Hot Lips!
Hot Lips is a member of Rubiaceae, the coffee family. This large shrub is widely distributed in tropical forests from southern Mexico to northernmost Argentina. To attract its main pollinators, hummingbirds, its inconspicuous inflorescences are framed by two glossy, bright red bracts that look like a pair of pouting lips. An easily grown and attractive ornamental for the tropics, it also has a number of applications in traditional medicine.

There are over 2,000 species of Psychotria, the genus under which Hot Lips falls. Where does Hot Lips grow? Psychotria elata is part of the tropical rainforest understory flora of the Americas. It is a unique plant with uninteresting flowers but fabulous lip-like bracts. The plant can be difficult to grow and has very special cultivation conditions.
Hot lips grows as a shrub or small tree. The plant has deeply veined simple leaves of matte green. The flower is actually a pair of modified leaves that pout around the tiny star-like white to cream flowers. These become small bluish-black berries. The plant is very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.

Thanks for viewing my photos and for any favourites and comments, it’s much appreciated.
Salvia, also named Hot Lips, so this is my choice for the theme; Lips
Thanks for taking time to fave, comment and look at my work. I really appreciate.
The honey bees always enjoy the salvia flowers usually because they are the last flowers standing in my garden. HBBBT have a great day folks ;0)

Some terrifying children came past our home last night and left with substantial amounts of chocolates. At this time of year even our flowers can exhibit behavioural changes. I doubt you were sucked in but take care when you next sniff the roses.
