Established in Notting Hill in 1990, Beach Blanket Babylon describes itself as a "club for the discerning without requiring a membership”. In 2007, they opened the Shoreditch branch, which I’d been going past for years (if you’re heading down bethnal Green Road from Shoreditch High Street station you can’t miss it) without really knowing what it was or what it was doing there. Look for stone (not sure if actually stone) eagles on the outside.
Anyway, they invited us along to the launch of ‘Host Your Own Roast’. Which is 50% party, 50% roast dinner. Combining Sunday Roasts and a party (on Sunday, obviously) is a pretty...astute idea that I can't say I've seen in all that many places. Also when it's a party at someone else's place (i.e BBB's place) you don't need to do the washing up. Unless you want to.
Other things of note where bottomless bloody marys (which I don’t really understand in this context but am not going to complain about), the chefs coming out to carve food as part of the demonstration (and as you can see, it was a LOT of food), a lemon meringue pie of legendary quality, and me dressed as a chef (no pictures of this survive)
The shots you see were taken inside the bar/restaurant area - which looks cool as fuck. BBB seem to focus on Modern European/British cuisine and a reasonable selection of wines and cocktails. It definitely reminds me of a wine bar/lounge. On that note, downstairs is a lounge that seats about 300 I believe (it was closed when I visited). I should quite like to return :D

MABUHAY ALLIANCE HOST THE 6TH ANNUAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
A conference to Assist Minorities in Finances and Business Opportunities
San Diego, CA – The Mabuhay Alliance, a San Diego-based nonprofit that assists minority communities with economic opportunities, will host their 6th Annual Economic Development Conference on October 17th, 2009, at the Sheraton Park Hotel The Anaheim Resort. 1855 S. Harbor Blvd. Anaheim, CA 92802.
This year's theme will be "Partnering for a better Future," and will feature workshops intended to educate and assist small business owners, families, and individuals to gain insight on how to effectively manage business and personal finances.
The workshops will be lead by industry experts and cover such topics as "Foreclosure Prevention Program," "Micro-Business Technical Assistance," "Financial Literacy," and "Supplier Diversity."
The conference will be concluded with a gala dinner, in which the Mabuhay Alliance will present guest speakers Timothy Simon, Commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission, and California Assembly Member Ted Lieu of the 53rd District. The conference will also honor and recognize the esteemed careers of the Greenlining Founders Robert Gnaizda and John Gamboa.
The conference has been recognized by both the Presidents of the United States and of the Philippines as well as by the Governor of California as contributing to the growth and development of minority communities in California. The morning of Monday, October 27, actor Jason Alexander hosted a Vote Early for Change event at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
Early voting in Florida began Monday, October 20 and Jason Alexander is encouraging voters to cast their ballot early in Palm Beach county and throughout South Florida. Early voting is available until Sunday, November 2, the polls will all be closed on November 3 and then of course November 4 is the Official Election Day and the last opportunity you will have to express your self and help to select Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.
Since you are looking at these photos, I assume you are voting for Obama, so it is very important to remember that if you really want Barack Obama and Joe Biden to be able to effect the change we all want, then you also need to vote for Democrats down the entire ticket...

VA Hosts Veteran Small Business Conference in New Orleans
Supports Veteran-Owned Businesses and Helps Them Compete for Federal Contracts
The Department of Veterans Affairs will host the upcoming National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo, Aug.15-18 in New Orleans. It will be the largest nationwide conference of its kind focused on helping Veteran-owned businesses succeed in winning federal contracts. “Veteran-owned businesses provide world class services and expand employment opportunities for some of our Nation’s most highly-trained and motivated men and women,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “That is why VA is proud to host this annual conference to help better prepare these veteran-owned businesses to compete and win contracts with the federal government.” The conference, scheduled for the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will provide Veteran-Owned and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned small businesses of all sizes with an opportunity to learn, network, and market their businesses. The conference will offer a variety of new training sessions on navigating the federal acquisition process, including finance, compliance, business development, marketing, strategy, contract management, human resources, technology, and program management. The conference track sessions will be targeted for a variety of businesses from new business owners just back from theater to well-established Veteran-owned businesses looking to expand opportunities or increase market share. On October 25, 2011 Teaching for Change hosted an after-hours event at the newly re-opened African American Civil War Museum (AACWM). In a warm and convivial atmosphere, Teaching for Change staff and board members welcomed funders, volunteers, and other friends to view the permanent exhibit at the AACWM. Museum founder/director Dr. Frank Smith, curator Hari Jones, and the rest of the museum staff helped to welcome the attendees as they strolled through the museum, conversed with colleagues and friends, and learned about the invaluable efforts of under-sung soldiers. As the first hour concluded, veteran high school history teacher Kevin Fox vocalized the sentiments of the evening when he contrasted the three lines in his U.S. history textbook that mention African American soldiers in the Civil War against the breadth and depth of the museum exhibit. Other speakers included high school principal and Teaching for Change donor Robert Babiak and volunteer and Birmingham native Amber Massey. Museum curator Hari Jones offered a brief overview of the museum’s philosophy and collection.

The Zama International Association hosted a "World Cooking Class" on May 18 in the cooking room on the second floor of the Zama City Citizens' Health Center.

U.S. Ambassador Scot Marciel hosted a dinner reception December 7 in honor of 130 alumni of the U.S. government-sponsored South East Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP). The alumni were in Jakarta to attend the first-ever SEAYLP Summit. The 130 students, representing all 10 ASEAN member states, had traveled to the United States for the three-week SEAYLP exchange program on leadership and community engagement. Alumni from the program have gone on to implement service projects in their home countries in fields such as child literacy and recycling. While in Jakarta, the students participated in workshops, visited the ASEAN Secretariat, and volunteered alongside Indonesian NGOs for community service projects. The Summit provided the opportunity to network across national boundaries, build ties between the US and ASEAN, and identify common issues facing ASEAN countries and other Pacific nations. A great number of people have recently arrived in Nyal payam, coming in the last weeks for fear of their safety amidst insecurity, despite a recently-signed peace accord.
At least 78,000 people displaced in Koch, Leer, and Mayiandit counties have arrived in Panyijiar County of Unity State as a result of continued fighting, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
According to the agency, insecurity and lack of access to vital supplies to South Sudanese was making it hard for humanitarian actors to deliver the necessary assistance to the most affected groups of displaced persons in parts of the country.
Fighting resumed last month despite a signed peace accord between the South Sudan government and the armed opposition forces led by the country's former vice president, Riek Machar.
Over the past month, insecurity and lack of access to vital supplies have continued to force South Sudanese to flee in search of safety, assistance, and protection, said OCHA.
In August, the report says, there was increased displacement of people due to fighting in and around Koch, Leer, and Mayiandit counties in Unity State and Wau Shilluk in Upper Nile.
As offensives continue between forces loyal to both factions in the south of Unity State, 18,000 people reportedly reached Nyal payam in Panyijiar in search of food and safety in recent weeks. This was in addition to the numbers who had fled there prior.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is providing food and nutrition assistance to the area; UNICEF is also present on the ground to treat severe acute malnutrition and to help with other various needs, including childhood education.
The host community has taken in those displaced, whether by welcoming them into their homes or by sharing land, food, and other resources.
