Megan was the "shabbat host" again today, which is about as exciting as life gets at preschool. She was really thrilled that Nick's parents got to come and join in - they were in London overnight ahead of flying to Rwanda for two years on VSO.

The hand-washing she's doing here was probably her favourite part, edging the grape juice drinking and challah eating into joint second place.

31 MAY 2017

Brunssum, Netherlands – Today, the 50th Anniversary of a NATO Headquarters hosted by the town of Brunssum was celebrated. Both military and civilian personnel of Allied Headquarters Joint Force Command Brunssum, joined by veterans from the local area, donned their best uniforms and attire to participate in a military parade conducted in the town centre. To underline the gravity of the occasion and the strong bond of friendship that exists between JFC Brunssum, the town, the province of Limburg and the host nation, the following VVIPs were in attendance:

His Royal Highness King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands;

Ms Rose Gottemoeller (NATO Deputy Secretary General (DSG));

Mrs Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert (Netherlands Minister of Defence (NLD MoD));

General Curtis M. Scaparrotti (Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR));

Mr Theo Bovens (King’s Commissioner and Governor of Limburg).

The parade and reception were jointly hosted by the Commander JFC Brunssum, General Salvatore Farina, and the Mayor of Brunssum, Mr Luc Winants. Following an inspection of the parade by General Scaparrotti the Mayor, three winners of a young persons’ regional debating contest, the Dutch Minister of Defence, the NATO Deputy Secretary General, SACEUR and Commander JFC Brunssum each delivered short speeches to those on parade and the on-looking public. The parade concluded with a fly-past of Belgian F-16s.

Shortly thereafter the Mayor, Governor, DSG, Chairman NATO Military Committee (General Petr Pavel), SACEUR and General Farina jointly unveiled a bronze artwork by the renowned Dutch artist, Harald Vlugt, surrounding a waterfall that connects the town square (the Lindeplein) to a lake in the adjacent Vijverpark. Twenty-eight trout have been painstakingly etched into the bronze representing the twenty-eight members of NATO who, just like the trout, often swim against the current to achieve their goal.

Historical Record: The original predecessor of the headquarters now called Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum was established in 1953 at the Palace of Fontainebleau, France; it’s title was Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT). In 1966 President de Gaulle announced his government’s intention to withdraw from the military structure of NATO and that Allied headquarters based on French soil were to leave the country within one year. Thus, NATO Headquarters moved from Paris to Brussels (Belgium); SHAPE (now called Allied Command Operations) moved from Paris to Mons (Belgium); and AFCENT moved from Fontainebleau to Brunssum (Netherlands). On 01 June 1967 the official inauguration ceremony of AFCENT at Brunssum was conducted in the presence of the Dutch Minister of Defence, the Governor of Limburg, SACEUR and many other distinguished guests. Since then France has re-joined the military structure of NATO whilst the relationship between the NATO headquarters based at Brunssum and its host town continues to grow ever stronger.

On 9th March 2018, ESCP Europe's London School and Campus hosted its 13th Annual Gala Dinner Dance.

Staged at The Landmark London five-star hotel, the event attracted record numbers for what is a highlight of the Campus' annual programme and calendar.

With 10 different degree programmes represented and over 350 guests, focus was placed on the School's achievements over the preceding 12 months and the success of its diverse student community.

A highlight of the evening was the award for London Student Society of the Year based on a student vote linked to four core values: Student Life, Community Building, Creativity and ESCP Europe Spirit. The award was shared by the Eventures Association-Regatta and UNITED, the London arm of the diplomatic society that organises the School's participation in the Model UN conference in New York. Both teams won a case of fine wine, generously donated by Tannin & Oak in West Hampstead. In presenting the evening's awards, Prof. Mercado, Dean of the London Campus, also highlighted two other Societies for their activism and initiative throughout the year: Cheer Up, the society campaigning for patients with cancer; and the Women in Finance Society, who we celebrated on our Facebook page to coincide with International Women's Day on 8th March.

Guests unanimously agreed that the Gala was a huge success, with many already looking forward to next year's event.

'I flew from Paris to live the Gala experience organised by the London campus. I was very impressed by the location and I enjoyed very much the reception. During dinner I caught up with the friends I met in my first year of the Master in Management who are now studying in London, and this was definitely the best part. A memorable location with the best company!' – Alba, Master in Management student

'This event was absolutely amazing. I'm participated for the first time and I found it astonishing. I truly felt that I was taking part in something special, surrounded by incredible smart people and with a magic atmosphere. It was a pleasure to have the chance to network with students from other masters and to strengthen friendships. The Gala represents for me a sense of belonging to the ESCP Europe community. I will definitely participate again.' – Davide, MSc in Marketing & Creativity student

'Our journey at ESCP Europe has only just begun, but the London Campus Gala marked a milestone on our journey. It is easy to say that dressing up in an impressive location alongside your best friends regardless of the occasion is always a pleasure; however, what made this evening special was the atmosphere created by the range of guests, from students to academic staff.' Pascal, Bachelor in Management (BSc) student

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this very special event and dressed to impress!

LA MULA SANTA

(Berlin / Chile /Armenia / Spain / Malta / Australia)

(Berliner Cumbia Götter)

The First Chilean Cumbia Band from Berlin

From Tierra del Fuego at the extreme southern of South America until the United States, from the Andes to the Atlantic coast, the Colombian Cumbia is popular, while in Europe it is still an amazingly well kept secret. Located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, this music has been not only in Latin America but also international success. The Band identity comes not only from the infectious beat of the Cumbia, but also of different Latin-American rhythms like Merengue, Salsa, Bomba, Guajira, Reggaeton and Latin Rock.

Taylor School District (Taylor Schools) School Bus # 51

The Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) Region 11 (Wayne County, MI) School Bus Driver Championship aka School Bus Roadeo was hosted by Taylor School District at Taylor High School on May 20, 2023.

Every year Tewkesbury hosts Europe’s largest medieval festival which includes the re-enactment of the battle. We attended on the Saturday in July 2011, with mixed weather but some very fine displays. The battle of Tewkesbury took place on May 4th 1471 between the royal houses of York, The White Rose, and Lancaster, The Red Rose. It started because Henry VI was considered insane and the country was without a strong leader. Edward of York, the most able leader left, was declared King in 1461. He had Henry locked in the tower of London and his wife Margaret of Anjou fled to France with their son also called Edward. When he reached 18 she decided to return to England and re-claim the throne for him. She landed at Weymouth on April 14, 1471, and set off for Wales, where Jasper Tudor awaited with re-enforcements for her army. Gathering supporters as they went, they headed for Gloucester to cross the Severn, only to find the city locked against them, by King Edward's orders. They headed for the next crossing point, Tewkesbury, but found that Edward's army was so close behind they had to stand and fight, rather than cross. Exhausted and outnumbered battle ensued but they were easily defeated, and so many of them were killed trying to get to the river that the field they ran through is still known today as Bloody Meadow. Margaret fled the scene with some of her ladies and was later found in a priory at Little Malvern. Prince Edward was killed either during the battle or just afterwards and he is interned in Tewkesbury Abbey. A brass plaque in the choir marks his last resting place, directly beneath a ceiling boss depicting the Yorkist badge.

New look of Hostal Mare Nostrum

We hosted an open studio for the Pataphysical Slot Machine in Mill Valley on Saturday, May 28th, from 1pm to 5pm. This special showing of our surreal art exhibit was for families with kids ages 6 or older. They seemed to enjoy the experience, as these photos suggest.

Visitors asked our poetic oracle for instructions from the future — and opened our many magical wonderboxes. They also learned more about ‘Pataphysics, the “science of imaginary solutions” that inspired dada and surrealism.

Many thanks to Drs. Figurine, Canard and their family for so graciously hosting this event in their home. Kudos as well to Drs. Rindbrain, Skidz, Heatshrink and Zboon for their help in preparing this event.
