Right around here a train passed, I was scared shirtless. It was loud, nothing to hide behind, and not sure if they are allowed to shoot people on the track.

Playing host to the rescheduled Foo Fighters concert at Wembley (that was cancelled after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg falling off stage at a show in Gothenburg, Sweden), the National Bowl in Milton Keynes came alive on Sunday, September 6, 2015 with the sound of 65,000 screaming fans. Following sets from rock duo Royal Blood and the eclectic propo-punk icon Iggy Pop, the Foos knew they had to deliver. From the moment the curtain sucked into a black hole vortex to the end of the show, it was obvious it was going to be one hell of a night to remember. Debra, Karl and I had arrived relatively early for the show and, being among the first to enter the MK Bowl, were offered "Inner Pit" passes. Issued on a first-come-first-serve basis, these gave fenced-off access to the stage and were an excellent surprise. We had a great view of the day's action and I was well positioned for photographs. "All My Life" opened the two and a half hour set, with Grohl spending the entire show seated on a most gloriously over-the-top throne, designed by Grohl himself and adorned by guitar necks. It transported the front-man up and down the runway, and was in itself a crowd pleaser! I have wanted to see the Foo Fighters for about two decades - and desperate to do so since "Wasting Light"- and they did not disappoint. A shredding version of "White Limo" alone justified the ticket price, and the rest was a wonderful (and sometimes nostalgic) tour through their back-catalogue. All in all, it was a triumphant, heart-warming singalong set that showed why, for so many, the Foo Fighters have been the soundtrack to the last two decades. Here's the Foo Fighters' set list for the Milton Keynes "Broken Leg" concert.
If I was desperate to see the Foo Fighters, I was absolutely aching to see 69 year old rock legend, Iggy Pop. I narrowly missed one of his gigs in Amsterdam at the end of 1978 and, after this initial disappointment, Iggy stayed on my Bucket List through the late-80's in London, the 90's in Prague and the naughties in the UK. When he was in town, I was always travelling, had other commitments or just had bad luck (i.e. the cancellation of the Foo's concert at Wembley in June where Iggy was on the supporting bill). Well, I finally got to see James Newell Osterberg, Jr. in full, topless, action in Milton Keynes on a fine evening in September 2015! Iggy brought his old school punk snarl to the party, prompting mass singalongs to classic tunes, some of which he penned with his old mate David Bowie in Berlin in the 70's. If I'm still as active as Iggy when I'm almost 70, I'll be more than happy! He made fine use of the runway before him, skipping, kicking, twisting and turning as only Iggy can. He took a breather every now and then, but Iggy still has more energy than any new breed act you care to mention. Fucking hell - he's the man that wrote "Lust for Life"! The snot-noses in the audience didn't know what hit them :-) FYI, here's the Iggy Pop's set list for the night.
A wonderful, sunny day and balmy evening with my family, and a fine way to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of my first date with my future-wife on September 7, 1983.

In the past three months, people across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have taken to the streets to demand – and in some cases obtain – change. Growing aspirations of youth in MENA regarding economic opportunities and political rights very quickly raised the bar for what governments need to do.
To shed light on the implications of these changes and opportunities in the region and its inclusion in a global economy, the World Bank will host a discussion titled Arab Voices and Views on March 21, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m EDT/ 13:00 to 17:00 GMT. Raleigh, NC - On November 18, NC Vision Zero hosts the third annual World Day of Remembrance (WDR) event at the State Capitol. A memorial display featuring thousands of shoes will be open to the public from 10am-5pm. The press event at 3pm will include remarks from Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell, and Tammy Garlock, who lost her son in a distracted driving crash.
The WDR memorial exhibit will display thousands of shoes, each pair representing a victim of traffic crashes on NC roads. Visitors to the exhibit can place yellow paper flowers on shoes to remember lost loved ones and honor their memory.
The annual exhibit is one of several WDR events around the globe, each focused on honoring the lives lost on our world’s roads and spreading awareness about preventable traffic violence.
About World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
The third Sunday of every November, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims calls attention to the suffering and heartache felt by millions as a result of preventable traffic violence. Hundreds of events honoring the lives lost are hosted all over the world.
About NC Vision Zero
Last year, 1,412 people were killed another 4,500 were seriously injured on North Carolina roads. NC Vision Zero is a collaborative, data-driven program aimed at eliminating these preventable roadway deaths and serious injuries. For more information, visit ncvisionzero.org.
NC Vision Zero Task Force Mission & Vision
Background
1,412 people were killed on North Carolina roads in 2017. Year after year, traffic
violence destroys an unacceptable number of lives in North Carolina: North Carolinians
clearly face a public health crisis. People of conscience naturally resent paying such an
unnecessary and unjust price for mobility. Every death from traffic violence is
demonstrably preventable.
Motor vehicle crashes are also financially costly, as one of the leading causes of Years
of Productive Life Lost due to unintentional injury for all age groups below 65 (CDC). In
one year, crash-related deaths cost North Carolina residents $1.71 Billion in medical
costs and work loss costs (CDC).
Resolved that losing even one life to traffic violence is unacceptable, the North Carolina
Executive Committee for Highway Safety (ECHS) passed a resolution adopting a Vision
Zero initiative in May 2015. The NC ECHS concluded that overcoming the challenges
connected with transforming traffic safety culture and drastically reducing serious injury
and death on our roadways would require a sustained collaborative effort. It therefore
established the NC Vision Zero Task Force to facilitate collaboration and lead the zero
tolerance charge for the state.
The NC Vision Zero Task Force consists of public and private-sector stakeholders, as
well as experts in the fields of engineering, law enforcement, education, emergency
response, and public engagement from across North Carolina. Its intent is to assist with
the implementation of North Carolina’s statewide Vision Zero initiative. It provides an
adaptive ecosystem, in which all participating safety initiatives can share information
freely and fluidly.
NC Vision Zero Principles:
1. No loss of life on North Carolina roads is acceptable.
2. All road users deserve safe streets.
3. North Carolinians should not incur risk of death or serious injury in exchange for
mobility.
4. A safe systems approach is required to eliminate fatal and serious injuries.
What is Vision Zero?
Vision Zero is a transportation safety paradigm conceived in Sweden in the late 1990s
to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by means of systemic interventions.
Through its Vision Zero efforts, Sweden has reduced traffic fatalities by half, making it
one of the safest places to travel in the world. A central tenet of Vision Zero is that
people should not be killed or seriously injured as a consequence of mobility. Vision
Zero recognizes that humans make mistakes and, therefore, that the transportation
system should be designed to minimize the consequences of those errors.
Vision Zero is based on a Safe Systems approach , equally reliant on safer roads,
safer vehicles, and safer road users to achieve zero roadway deaths.
Safer Roads
Roadways should be designed to protect their imperfect, human users by physically
limiting the range of possible dangerous acts those users can perform.
Safer Vehicles
Vehicle technology should be designed to compensate for natural human deficiencies of
attention, perception, reaction speed, etc. to prevent or mitigate crashes.
Safer Road Users
Outreach should be designed to encourage a sense of shared responsibility in all
road-users, motivating them always to make intelligent, courteous, and safe decisions
on the road.
NC Vision Zero Task Force Vision, Mission, and Goals
Vision: To eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries through collaborative,
data-driven interventions.
The purpose of the NC Vision Zero Task Force is to eliminate deaths and serious
injuries on all modes of ground transportation using data-driven prevention strategies
(with emphasis on a safe systems approach) in collaboration with local, regional, and
state partners.
Mission: To supply all safety stakeholders in North Carolina with effective resources,
tools, and information, enabling them to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
The NC Vision Zero Task Force mission includes the following goals:
● Serve as a clearinghouse for North Carolina safety data, research, and
resources.
● Provide a bridge for collaboration by facilitating communications between traffic
safety stakeholders across the state.
● Encourage and promote safe systems designs, which prioritize safety over
speed.
● Inspire and encourage, support and amplify local, regional, and statewide Vision
Zero initiatives.
● Facilitate access to information regarding safety initiatives operating and
developing in North Carolina.
● Advocate for processes and outcomes which promote public health equity,
engage with populations disproportionately killed or seriously injured on North
Carolina roads, and protect the most vulnerable road users.
● Serve as conduit for advocates, concerned citizens, and traffic safety
professionals to present research, efforts, and proposed solutions for statewide
consideration and implementation.
● Provide updates and recommendations to ECHS.
● Establish criteria/guidelines/best practices for local Vision Zero initiatives.
● Promote policies and practices to account for the safety of all road users
regardless of mode of transportation, age, ability, race, or income.
● Promote a culture of traffic safety in North Carolina, in which roadway violence is
not tolerated or socially acceptable.
● Provide research, crash data, and stakeholder engagement for proposed
policies.
Long Term Goals
● Cut fatalities and serious injuries in North Carolina in half by 2030, as established
in the North Carolina Highway Safety Plan.
● Improve access, transparency, and public understanding of crash causes and
data.
● Educate and empower North Carolinians to speak up if someone is being unsafe
on the road.
● Engage researchers, practitioners, and invested community members toward
developing a deeper understanding of the contributing factors involved in road
user safety, and investigating ways to effectively implement proven
countermeasures and community-based interventions.

Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants. They are native to northeast Asia (China, Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East). Though Hosta plantaginea originates in China, most of the species that provide the modern plants were introduced from Japan to Europe by Philipp Franz von Siebold in the mid-19th century.
The genus was named by Austrian botanist Leopold Trattinnick in 1812, in honor of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host.
(Photo taken at Rosendals Trädgård, a garden open to the public situated on Djurgården in the central part of Stockholm, Sweden)
From TheDali.org, "Profanation of the Host possesses a number of sacrilegious connotations. The title alone is an irreverent and abusive blast at the Eucharist. At the very top of the structure to the right, a limp bearded sleeping face hangs above a chalice and the Eucharist. The Christ-like face is bleeding on these symbols of the mass, an act of religious desecration and contempt.
Dalí makes this painting even more astonishing by including a face he used in his other painting called The Great Masturbator. This reference of masturbation in relation to the body of Christ was intended to shock the viewer. Dalí said that this face is a self-portrait. The head is soft and appears to not contain a skull. Its source is a rock called “the Rock of Cullero” on Cape Creus which Dalí remembered from his childhood home near Cadaqués. The rock has the appearance of a man’s head balancing on his nose, an image mirrored in many of Dalí’s paintings.
Dalí and the Surrealists’ reactions to the church were blasphemous. After WWI many disillusioned men and women felt that religion had failed them. The Surrealists were anti-establishment and atheistic believing traditional philosophy was responsible for the horrific war. Much later in his career, Dalí tried to exonerate himself by saying that Profanation of the Host was a work of Catholic essence. "

Dutch postcard by Art Unlimited, Amsterdam, no B 5154. Photo: Paul Huf, 1958. Brigitte Bardot with American TV host Ed Sullivan and French film director and comedian Jacques Tati in Paris.
French actress Brigitte Bardot (1934) died on 28 December 2025, at the age of 91. In the 1950s, she was the sex kitten of the European film industry. BB starred in 48 films, performed in numerous musical shows, and recorded 80 songs. After her retirement in 1973, she became an animal rights activist. In the coming weeks, we will continue to post a BB postcard every day to remember her as she once was.
Brigitte Bardot was born in Paris in 1934. Her father, Louis Bardot, had an engineering degree and worked with his father in the family business. Her mother, Ann-Marie Mucel, was 14 years younger than Brigitte's father, and they married in 1933. Brigitte's mother encouraged her daughter to take up music and dance. At the age of 13, she entered the Conservatoire Nationale de Danse to study ballet. By the time she was 15, Brigitte was trying to launch a modelling career and found herself on the cover of the French magazine Elle in May 1949. Her incredible beauty was readily apparent, and Brigitte was noticed by Roger Vadim, then an assistant to the film director Marc Allegrét. Vadim was infatuated with Bardot and encouraged her to start working as a film actress. BB was 18 when she debuted in the comedy Le Trou Normand / Crazy for Love (Jean Boyer, 1952). In the same year, she married Vadim. Brigitte wanted to marry him when she was 17, but her parents quashed any marriage plans until she turned 18. In April 1953, she attended the Cannes Film Festival, where she received massive media attention. She soon was every man's idea of the girl he'd like to meet in Paris. From 1952 to 1956, she appeared in seventeen films. Her films were generally lightweight romantic dramas in which she was cast as an ingénue or siren, often with an element of undress. In 1953, she made her first US production, Un acte d'amour / Act of Love (Anatole Litvak, 1953) with Kirk Douglas, but she continued to make films in France.
Roger Vadim was not content with the light fare his wife was offered. He felt Brigitte Bardot was being undersold. Looking for something more like an art film to push her as a serious actress, he showcased her in Et Dieu créa la femme / ...And God Created Woman (Roger Vadim, 1956). This film, about an immoral teenager in a respectable small-town setting, was a smash success on both sides of the Atlantic. Craig Butler at AllMovie: "It's easy enough to say that ...And God Created Woman is much more important for its historical significance than for its actual quality as a film, and that's true to an extent. The immense popularity, due to its willingness to directly embrace an exploration of sex as well as its willingness to show a degree of nudity that was remarkably daring for its day, demonstrated that audiences were willing to view subject matter that was considered too racy for the average moviegoer. This had both positive (freedom to explore, especially for the French filmmakers of the time) and negative (freedom to exploit) consequences, but its impact is undeniable. It's also true that Woman is not a great work of art, not with a story that is ultimately rather thin, some painful dialogue, and an attitude toward its characters and their sexuality that is unclear and inconsistent. Yet Woman is still fascinating, due in no small part to the presence of Brigitte Bardot in the role that made her an international star and sex symbol. She's not demonstrating great acting here, although her performance is actually good and much better than necessary, and her legendary mambo scene at the climax is nothing short of sensational." During the filming of Et Dieu créa la femme / And God Created Woman (Roger Vadim, 1956), directed by her husband, Brigitte Bardot had an affair with her co-star, Jean-Louis Trintignant, who at the time was married to French actress Stéphane Audran. Her divorce from Vadim followed, but they remained friends and collaborated in later work.
Et Dieu créa la femme / ...And God Created Woman (Roger Vadim, 1956) helped Brigitte Bardot's international status. The film took the USA by storm, her explosive sexuality being unlike anything seen in the States since the days of the 'flapper' in the 1920s. It gave rise to the phrase 'sex kitten', and fascination with her in America consisted of magazine photographs and dubbed over French films - good, bad or indifferent, her films drew audiences - mainly men - into theatres like lemmings. BB appeared in light comedies like Doctor at Large (Ralph Thomas, 1957) - the third of the British 'Doctor' series starring Dirk Bogarde - and Une Parisienne / La Parisienne (Michel Boisrond, 1957), which suited her acting skills best. However, she was a sensation in the crime drama En cas de malheur / Love is My Profession (Claude Autant-Lara, 1958). Hal Erickson at AllMovie: "This Brigitte Bardot vehicle ran into stiff opposition from the Catholic Legion of Decency, severely limiting its U.S. distribution. Bardot plays a nubile small-time thief named Yvette, who becomes the mistress of influential defence attorney Andre (Jean Gabin). Though Andre can shower Yvette with jewels and furs, he cannot "buy" her heart, and thus it is that it belongs to handsome young student Mazzetti (Franco Interlenghi). Alas, Yvette is no judge of human nature: attractive though Mazzetti can be, he has a dangerous and deadly side. En Cas de Malheur contains a nude scene that has since been reprinted in freeze-frame form innumerable times by both film-history books and girlie magazines." Photographer Sam Lévin's photos contributed considerably to her image of sensuality and slight immorality. One of Lévin's pictures shows Brigitte, dressed in a white corset. It is said that around 1960, postcards with this photograph outsold in Paris those of the Eiffel Tower.
Brigitte Bardot divorced Vadim in 1957, and in 1959 she married actor Jacques Charrier, with whom she starred in Babette s'en va-t-en guerre / Babette Goes to War (Christian-Jaque, 1959). The paparazzi preyed upon her marriage, while she and her husband clashed over the direction of her career
Her films became more substantial, but this brought a heavy pressure of dual celebrity as she sought critical acclaim while remaining a glamour model for most of the world. Vie privée / Private Life (1962), directed by Louis Malle, has more than an element of autobiography in it. James Travers at French Films: "Brigitte Bardot hadn’t quite reached the high point of her career when she agreed to make this film with high-profile New Wave film director Louis Malle. Even so, the pressure of being a living icon was obviously beginning to get to France’s sex goddess, and Vie privée is as much an attempt by Bardot to come to terms with her celebrity as anything else. Malle is clearly fascinated by Bardot, and the documentary approach he adopts for this film reinforces the impression that it is more a biography of the actress than a work of fiction. Of course, it’s not entirely biographical, but the story is remarkably close to Bardot’s own life and comes pretty close to predicting how her career would end." The scene in which, returning to her apartment, Bardot's character is harangued in the elevator by a middle-aged cleaning lady calling her offensive names was based on an actual incident, and is a resonant image of celebrity in the mid-20th century. Soon afterwards, Bardot withdrew to the seclusion of Southern France.
Brigitte Bardot's other husbands were German millionaire Playboy Gunter Sachs and right-wing politician Bernard d'Ormale. She is reputed to have had relationships with many other men, including Samy Frey, her co-star in La Vérité / The Truth (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1960), and musicians Serge Gainsbourg and Sacha Distel. In 1963, Brigitte Bardot starred in Jean-Luc Godard's critically acclaimed film Le Mépris / Contempt (Jean-Luc Godard, 1963) opposite Michel Piccoli. She was also featured along with such notable actors as Alain Delon in Amours célèbres / Famous Love Affairs (Michel Boisrond, 1961) and Histoires extraordinaires /Tales of Mystery (Louis Malle, 1968), Jeanne Moreau in Viva Maria! (Louis Malle, 1965), Sean Connery in Shalako (Edward Dmytryk, 1968), and Claudia Cardinale in Les Pétroleuses / Petroleum Girls (Christian-Jaque, 1971). She participated in various musical shows and recorded many popular songs in the 1960s and 1970s, mostly in collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Zagury and Sacha Distel, including 'Harley Davidson', 'Le Soleil De Ma Vie' (the cover of Stevie Wonder's 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life') and the notorious 'Je t'aime... moi non plus'.
Brigitte Bardot’s film career showed a steady decline in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1973, just before her fortieth birthday, she announced her retirement. She chose to use her fame to promote animal rights. In 1976, she established the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals. She became a vegetarian and raised three million French francs to fund the foundation by auctioning off jewellery and many personal belongings. For this work, she was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1984. During the 1990s, she was also outspoken in her criticism of immigration, interracial relationships, Islam in France and homosexuality. Her husband Bernard d'Ormal was a former adviser of the far-right Front National party. Bardot has been convicted five times for 'inciting racial hatred'. More fun is that Bardot is recognised for popularising bikini swimwear, in such early films as Manina / Woman without a Veil (Willy Rozier, 1952), in her appearances at Cannes and in many photo shoots. Bardot also brought into fashion the 'choucroute' ('Sauerkraut') hairstyle (a sort of beehive hairstyle) and gingham clothes after wearing a checkered pink dress, designed by Jacques Esterel, at her wedding to Charrier. The fashions of the 1960s looked effortlessly right and spontaneous on her. Time Magazine: "She is the princess of pout, the countess of come hither. Brigitte Bardot exuded a carefree, naïve sexuality that brought a whole new audience to French films."

About Monster University
Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”).
