Closeup of one of the hooks atop Amsterdam residences.

Most houses in Amsterdam lean forward slightly and have a hook attached to the gable. If you've ever climbed the stairs in a building in Amsterdam, you know why... Due to the unique narrow construction, the stairs are usually very narrow and very steep; not the best for moving anything to the upper floors. The hook allows for a pulley system to be attached and furniture or other items lifted up and brought in through the window. The forward lean keeps items away from the face of the house while they are being hoisted. Crafty.
