Constructed in the 13th century Hook Head lighthouse is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. Oliver Cromwell declared when he was drawing up plans to attack the port city of Waterford in the 17th century that he would take the city either by “Hook or by Crook” hence they saying (Hook head being on one side of the town and Crook head being on the other”). 01/01/2018. Free to use image. A centuries-old tradition took place today (New Year’s Day) at the 800-year-old Hook Lighthouse, Co. Wexford as the Dunbrody Archers take part in a traditional “arrow ceremony” an ancient tradition which dates back to 1687. Members of the Dunbrody Archers fire arrows into the sea . Picture: Patrick Browne...Age-old tradition re-enacted at Hook Lighthouse on New Year’s Day 2018. .An age-old tradition takes place today New Year’s Day at the 800-year-old Hook Lighthouse in county Wexford as the archers, both expert and amateur, take part in a traditional “arrow ceremony”.. .At 3pm, the Dunbrody Archers will join Cllr Willie Fitzharris is An Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of New Ross Council to participate in the ceremony. The ancient tradition dates back to 1687, when the Mayor and the corporation of New Ross Town Council claimed their authority over the Tower and waters by travelling to the point of the Hook and shooting an arrow into the sea from Hook Head Lighthouse.. .Today, on New Year’s Day 2018 the Mayor will cast an arrow into the sea symbolising the Ports authority over the estuary. Members of the public are invited to watch the free historical event at 3pm on New Year’s Day.. .Commenting on the up coming event, Cathy Dowling at Hook Lighthouse said, “This is always an incredible occasion to witness and we are delighted to continue the ancinet tradition, right here on the cornerstone of Ireland’s Ancient East.”.Also taking place on New Year’s Day at Hook Lighthouse is ‘Daisy Day’ age-old tradition, as Hook Lighthouse records show the old New Year custom in the form of 'Penny for a Daisy' which was carried out by the children on New Year's Day and large numbers of children collected the first flower of 1943 and received pennies for them. According to Hook Lighthouse, “The child who found the first daisy would win the hunt but lots of children would receive pennies from the families in the area.” This New Year’s day will see the hunt take place and children receiving a chocolate penny for their efforts. Free afternoon entertainment will also be on offer with Captain Hook along with art workshops with resident artist Rose..Hook is renowned as the oldest intact working lighthouse in the world, from the 5th century monks lit fires to keep the ships at sea safe. The Hook Lighthouse tour incorporates 115 steps to the top of the lighthouse tower featuring holograms illustrating the ancient history of the tower and the Hook area and spectacular views of the southern coast.. .Hook Lighthouse Visitor Centre and Café closes on December 18th and re-opens on St Stephen’s Day at 11am and will remain open throughout the holiday season. The visitor centre opened in its initial form 16 years ago and, since then, hundreds of thousands of people have passed through its doors and climbed its many steps.
