St. Peter's Hook Norton was once a substantial Norman church, judging by the scale of the surving chancel. Norman work is evidenced externally by pilaster buttresses and the stringcourse which are still visible. There are Norman windows to the north and south, but the east window is Decorated. C14 chancel arch though the imposts of an earlier arch survive. Norman north transept with blocked round-headed arch in the north wall. The south transept is Decorated and continuous with the south aisle. Nave north arcade has octagonal piers c.1300 while the south aisle is Decotated in style with later octagonal piers, both aisles have Perpendicular arches into north and south transepts. The windows are Decorated except the Perpendicular west window. The porch was rebuilt in 1825 but has an Early English doorway. Perpendicular clerestory with 'Cotswold' window above the chancel arch. Perpendicular west tower of four stages and impressive proportions. The church is famous for its Norman font bearing Adam and Eve with appropriate inscriptions and symbols of the zodiac including Sagittarius and Aquarius. C15 wall paintings of St. Peter and St. Paul with censoring angels over the chancel arch. East window 1881 by Ward and Hughes and the beautiful south aisle east window by John Henry Dearle, Morris and Co, 1818.

Ahora sólo me faltan cuatro miniaturas para completar mi set de Aberrations de Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures. Todo un logro, considerando lo difíciles que son de encontrar en Chile :-D

Roll 39 Ektachrome 100 - 10 Rodman Gun sign – Sandy Hook Light, Kearney Rd, National Park, Monmouth, NJ. May 28, 1991. Decimal degrees: 40.465347, -74.005530 Good

“Rodman Gun”

“Developed in the Civil War era, this type of 20-inch gun gave the U.S. the largest muzzle-loading cannon ever made. At the same time, however, rifled guns were being developed which made all smoothbore cannon obsolete.

With spin from spiral grooves inside the barrel pointed projectiles from rifled cannon could travel farther and with greater accuracy than cannon-balls from smoothbore weapons. During the Civil War, rifled artillery easily penetrated the thick masonry walls of several coastal forts, which influenced the Army to abandon construction of a masonry fort on Sandy Hook.”

Above portrait:

“A large gun burst near Lieutenant Thomas Rodman in 1844. Afterwards the ordnance officer committed himself to improving the technology of cannon manufacture, and invented the casting process that made possible this one-piece, 115, 100-pound smoothbore barrel.”
