Carrock Mine is the only site in the UK outside of Devon and Cornwall where the mineral wolframite is found. Although wolframite only occurs in small amounts l there was still enough to establish the mine as one of only two mines in the country where wolframite was the sole ore produced.

Sloe Fair, Chichester

----------

The earliest record of the holding of a fair in Chichester is the grant by Henry I, about 1107-8, to Ralph, Bishop of Chichester, of a fair to be held for eight days, at a time to be fixed by the Bishop. The date selected was the feast of St. Faith the Virgin, whose cult was strong in the city. The name "Sloe Fair" seems to have been derived from the sloe tree which stood in the field near the North Gate of the city where the fair was held.

Although the form of the fair has varied with time, the tradition of Sloe Fair continues to the present day. On 20 October each year, a large funfair is held in the Northgate car park for one day and Cicestrians enjoy themselves, as in the past. During World War II, a single caravan was parked on the site so that the right to hold Sloe Fair would not lapse.

Hook Head is the oldest lighthouse in Ireland, and one of the oldest in Europe still operating. In the 5th century St Dubhan set up a fire beacon on the headland as a warning to mariners. After his death his monks kept the beacon going for another 600 years. Between 1170 and 1184 the Normans built the present lighthouse. It was built from local limestone and burned lime mixed with ox’s blood. Even today traces of the blood-lime mix can be seen coming through the paintwork. The walls are 9 to 13 feet thick and 80 feet above the ground.[1] In 1665 King Charles II granted letters patent to Sir Robert Reading to erect six lighthouses on the coast of Ireland, one of which was at Hook Head on the site of the older lighthouse, the others being at Howth, one to mark the land, the other to lead over the bar; the Old Head of Kinsale, Barry Oge's castle (now Charlesfort, near Kinsale), and the Isle of Magee[2].

Hook-Ness was an exhibition by Fieldwork, curated by Joji Fukushima. Stemming from the idea of "Ness" we explored the essence of what makes an object what it is, Hooks were chosen as the topic to disect more fully.
