For this project, we were really trying to make Rockwood become a center of connectivity and activities with hopes that it would better the current social and economic conditions.We have provided amenities that the community here desires such as public library, grocery store and rec center. We also created a model live work alley that will hopefully create social interaction. And last but not least, we have decided to redesign Rockwood in such a way that there will have greater synergy amongst uses by integrating in parks and walkable sidewalks.

Nation-building is the process by which peoples with diverse origins, histories, languages, and cultures and living under one political rule develop over time common interests, goals, and values that are sufficient enough to make them want to continue to live together. The method that seems most suited to obtaining such a result is the practice of assimilation. This is usually done through the imposition of the language and culture of the political dominant group, which group uses the state machinery to homogenize the society in its own image. Evidently, the policy succeeds only to the extent that it does not encounter a strong resistance from the groups targeted for assimilation and that it is implemented over a period of time long enough to ensure the effective political continuity of the dominating group. The cases of France and Italy can be considered as representative examples of a successful outcome of nation-building through the policy of assimilation.

..or at least one of them. I am trying to document something here - the search and finding of something profound and beautiful. The problem this little cafe poses is the problem with most of America today - the de-culturalization, the homogenization of anything different and unique, albeit in the name of safety and self preservation... The dulling of all that shimmers and shines. We are in a frenzied drive toward utter and complete banality. I must dealwith it. I cannot look away for it is everywhere... That is why i've shown this picture.

Every Sunday morning there is a flea market in the open air arena of the Wholesale Markets in the city. All manner of bric-a-brac can be found. It is a truly global market with vendors from across Birmingham's multi-cultural population. It is a great contrast to the homogenized wares on offer in the nearby shopping centers.
These bold figures are made of cast metal. I wanted to take them home but they would've added 10 kilos to my luggage.

Alloy Development and Manufacture - Melt Processing
Unique materials designed for use in extreme environments are formulated in NETL’s Metals Melting Facility. Researchers define alloy specifications to technicians who developed the metal in the laboratory’s high temperature furnaces. Molds are used to cool the resulting alloy into ingots, which are then heat treated to homogenize the structure. Formulated metal alloys are machined using a band saw, lathe, and other equipment in preparation for hot working in the Fabrication Facility. The Metals Melting Facility can melt any metals needed for NETL research, resulting in batches ranging from a few grams to over 400 lbs. Ingots produced in the Facility typically go on to vacuum induction melting, vacuum arc remelting, electro-slag remelting, or button melting operations in the same facility.
