How many of you have ever had work done on your home? At the moment, I'm in the middle of chimney repair, but I've recently had landscaping, exterior painting & gutter work, deck work, toilet, tub, & shower replacement, minor electrical, & some weather stripping, in preparing to sell my house. Each time someone is due to arrive, I try to be prepared, to make things easy for the workers &, at the same time, protect my home. I hate the loss of privacy &, often, it seems that repairs come at a cost of damage, to some extent. Yesterday, I got up early, expecting the chimney guy. It was warm, but raining torrentially. When he was 2 hours past the time he'd given me, I called & was told he doesn't work in rain. He said he would do the inside work on the damper, today. When I woke up to fresh snow, I shoveled the walk, cleared everything out of the living room, & put down tarps to protect the hardwood floors. I, also, turned down the thermostats, since it was only 8 degrees F. today. When he was a half hour late, I started to worry. Thankfully, this time he did come & got good work done. He'll be in & out all next week, though, which will keep me from doing errands & visiting an older friend who doesn't drive & hasn't seen me since before Christmas. I still need a little work done by the electrician & handyman, too. I'll be glad when this is done! January 7, 2014, Columbia County, New York, USA.

After a surprisingly difficult struggle, I wrestled out a hunk of roots and some kind of nonwoven fabric pieces, probaby bathroom cleaning wipes. Put them in the trash, folks.

The Tie Beams in the trench below the concrete pictured here are connected at both exterior ends with steel plates. This procedure stabilizes and pulls together, so to speak, the house which has been separating due to mountain side creep.

This stair step cracking in the block foundation wall is a result of our expansive soils putting horizontal pressure on this foundation wall.

It seems clear a handrail used to be anchored here. After it was pulled out of the wall, somebody repaired it with a giant vinyl patch. My goal was to secure the plaster around the hole and make a more durable (and better looking) patch.
