I've been so busy this whole summer getting the bookstore ready my house is a mess! including the kitchen. My kids and Mercury man are real helpful, and the boys usually do the dishes anyway. But I love being domestic and taking care of my household, so I need to get it together! first things first, I washed the dishes.

The people who dumped this lot are bastards. Norfolk Homemakers would have collected it for free and seen it went to a good home.

I spent last Sunday (March 14th) here with John Shillaw www.flickr.com/photos/jshillaw/ and Paul Olejarczuk www.flickr.com/photos/cabledetached/ . It was a great day. At that time we saw this bird pecking away at this tree. There was no hole that day. Little did we know that it was making a home! I've never seen anything like this before, I was totally AWE-MAZED!
I've had a hectic week and the weather hasn't been good. This morning was very cold and windy and I had a very short time (20-30 minutes) to take some photos of the Red-Flanked Bluetail at Suigen Koen. Late afternoon I had a chance to spend about 30 minutes at Akiba Koen. As I only had a very short time to shoot I hesitated about going. But, the weather was so pleasant by that time that I couldn't resist. Glad I made the effort!
Well, it's after midnight so I'll catch up with everyone over the weekend.

Modern Homemaker just spoke to me for this altered project! The cigar box is actually wood so it is nice and sturdy. I removed the little brass clasp to use on something else later. Since this photo was taken, I've added wood 1" cube "feet" painted black. The little girl cutout was painted with Modg Podg to give her a sturdy vinyl feel.

A bit of an odd one, this. There is a palable sense of 70s feminism lurking under the surface in this magazine, feeling that many of the writers hearts are just no longer in the world of the sixties homemaker...
These modular buildings have taken somewhere around half a year to get around finishing. Started from those DUPLO cushions but didn't know how I'd want them used first. Saw a building in an old HO train catalog and then it just took off. I loosely based it of my experiences in Shibuya with the change in elevation as well as the difference in scale. Most of the interior is decorated. I'll snag some photos of it soon.
Bryan O'Quinn : Biography
Bryan O’Quinn was one of the few underground dance music artists to enjoy negligible mainstream exposure during the late ’80s and early ’90s heyday of hip-hop soul. O’Quinn’s smooth seductive crooning style and erotic dance moves earned him a substantial female following and made him a presence on the up and coming R&B scene. Even after the futuristic productions he favored were eclipsed by the more organic, retro-leaning neo-soul movement.
Achi Bryan Amamihe more popularly known as Bryan O'Quinn is an American who is of direct Nigerian ancestry and has been quoted as saying he has always felt like an African in America and even as a small child I knew that my family began wherever we were on that day. His father a hard-working managerial businessman and his mother a creative homemaker turned entrepreneur, who perused degrees of education while raising their family with her husband , exposed their child to the arts through academics at a very early age. Education was very important to Bryan's parents and therefore they allowed him to be involved in many extra curricular instructive activities He began singing and dancing when he was just two years old and, when he was three and a half, he performed song, dance and very clever storytelling, before a lively audience of third graders. Enchanted by the talented tyke, Students and Teacher asked O’Quinn’s Grandmother, who at one time co-hosted a praise and worship radio show, to bring him back weekly, and that she did. By the time he was in junior high school, he had begun to participate in music competitions, workshops, and The Children’s Theatre that’s when he began to write songs. After high school completion, He sought secondary education through certificate course programs at both North Carolina and Philadelphia Schools the Performing of Arts O’Quinn took private voice lessons at the Community School of the Arts in his hometown. Already a working model, singing with several original music and cover bands, Bryan O’Quinn is specialized in various forms of music, dance and photography. Furthermore Bryan is not only a singer, but also a writer and producer. After signing with a New York City Independent Record label in the late ’80s, Bryan O’Quinn’s debut LP Working All the Time, included the singles “Yes we can " and "The Feeling of Love (you’ve got to move) both of which received a good response in a number of R&B and dance circles. Bottom Line and Experience the Jazz & Groove (recorded live) followed in 1990 and 1992, both of which established a high-quality reaction in black college (HBCU) radio. After release from his contract, the record label folded. Shortly after that his single release “Keep on (Holding On)” (remixed and recycled by Chuck Walker and Hit Sounds Entertainment NYC) still did well on the club scene and gained some radio rotation. A buzz had been created with little or no support from a record label. In 1996, Bryan O’Quinn founded BSM Entertainment & Records where he began to collaborate with other upcoming artists and produce his own projects independently.
O’Quinn spent that spring performing live engagements with his band at spring festivals, biker rallies, and many of the historic colleges; Davidson College, Johnson C. Smith University, and Morehouse College just to name a few. By the following summer, Mr. O’Quinn was playing many limited engagements for 1,000-2,000 fans a night as the opening act for other artists the most rife was Grammy-winning rap group Arrested Development.
In 2004 Bryan O’Quinn signed an exposure agreement with the Alpha Model Group (a division of On track Modeling Inc.) The Contract representation directs his modeling, promotional work, and television, print, and motion picture endeavors.
The new millennium found Bryan O’Quinn in yet another inspirational and motivating place, championing many causes, especially those concerned with families and children. He was spokesperson for the Men of Valor Responsible fatherhood association partnering with Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. An organization adhering to the great importance of the non-custodial parents or as O’Quinn was quoted as saying the uplifting and preservation of the father parent child connection.
In early 2006 Mr. O’Quinn began to serve as a board member for a very exclusive Performing Arts Advisory Board which was formed by the Dilworth Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School. The purpose of the board is to strengthen the connection between the school and one of Charlotte NC’s most esteemed neighborhoods.
In 2006 and 2007 O’Quinn found newer success selling his original music catalogs, recordings and downloads online. Singer, songwriter and music business man Bryan O’Quinn worked and contracted with Music Sales Companies who partnered and affiliated with major retail stores doing special music product and merchandising promotions for top popular recording artist like Beyoncé, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Jill Scott, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross and Prince all who had new hit music releases for various record companies during this year. Mr. O’Quinn also participated in radio and venue promotions with gospel artist like Troy Sneed and other various secular artists.
Bryan O’Quinn nicknamed “Bo Quinn” by some continues to balance a happy life of single parent fatherhood and his current career demands with elevated goals for the future in music, fashion, television and beyond. His chronicles project Bryan O’Quinn: Profile of a Don (A Retrospective Collection) was initially released in first edition form as a two disc-CD package. The collection of songs was later condensed to a one disc package with new material and alternate takes of his original recordings is scheduled for a 2012 reissue, essentially as an unassuming offering for itself was for his already established fan base and long time supporters. “For me, every song on my new CD is a positive affirmation of where I’ve been as an artist and it is truly a direct acknowledgment and a personal thank you from me to all of my supporters and my core fan base over the years, to the business people who have taught me, I am extremely grateful,” Mr. O’Quinn said.
AP Press Release : Bryan O'Quinn Buzz Single: Bryan O’Quinn Category: Music Neo soul, alternative hip hop I clearly raved about the buzz single "Stay True," which has been getting airplay this year, new material from this talented young musician— I have taken to the song. The song can also be heard on Sound Click internet Radio and his
MySpace page (www.myspace.com/bryanoquinn).
What I love about "…Stay true" is Bryan O’Quinn’s ability to represent both the old school Motown inspired style and the newer generation of a cool but more chic R&B style, his music has been described as that smooth sophisticated dance funk where you’ll just have to get down but you don’t have to get dirty. Stay true is a feel-good message track that should hopefully keep his fan base at ease until his new album arrives . Tribal house is a fusion of various styles of electronic dance music Latin House and African House Here as a producer Mr. O’Quinn distorts the boundaries between dark house, which is an offshoot of progressive house He delivers a more techno-like, yet jazzy kind of house, and mixes intelligent dance music lyrics with a truly spiritual message.

This interesting looking place was apparently the old “KC Hall”. It was built by the CCC in the 30s. Someone commented on this post and had the following to say: “This is an old hall built in the 1930’s by the CCC. We are in the process of fixing it up as a day cabin. It was used for dances, 4H, Homemakers, church fairs, etc.”
I can totally see that! cheery community events held here and the CCC building this place - it’s a nice history to imagine!
I found a wonderful article on the history in the town of Huff here. And it mentions this building!
“With drought and a depression striking not just North Dakota, but the entire country, many were forced to give up their homesteads and find work elsewhere. For many, that came in the form of the Works Progress Administration. The area would see some much needed improvements, as well as other areas being preserved for history. While the WPA was busy helping preserve the Huff Indian Historical Site, workers were also building roads and ditches. It was also at this time that the town of Huff would get a welcomed addition; a new dance hall.”
And the article contains more great history. Check this out.
“Taking the name of the previous fort, Fort Rice would soon see an increasing number of settlers coming to the area. One of those individuals was a man by the name of John Huff.
Arriving in Fort Rice in 1888, Huff had filed a claim for a 160 acres of land eight miles north of the town, with the want to homestead that area.
Unlike many other settlers though, Huff’s primary interest wasn’t in farming. Instead, seeing what seemed to be a great opportunity, Huff had learned that the Northern Pacific was planning on building a branch line to Fort Rice.
It wouldn’t be for another two decades that the branch would begin to materialize. Facing both financial problems, as well as set backs in laying track, the progress of the Northern Pacific was often hampered.
For Huff, the postponements would get the better of him. Having built a saloon on his land, he held out hope, but would pass away before it came to realization.”
“Pushing south, under Edward Fogerty, the branch line would begin to form in 1910. Soon, the line would move to the area where Huff had lived, 19 miles southeast of Mandan. The stop that would be created there would be called the 19th siding.
With more individuals settling in the area, a post office was established the next year, on May 12, 1911. Emmeth Dobson would be installed as the Postmaster there, and he would name the place Huff, in honor of the early homesteader.
The town would take off. A large railroad depot was built, and with the town growing rapidly, a school house was also established.
As immigrants continued to pour into the area, Huff would experience a short golden age. Soon buildings were sprouting from the prairie. Huff was no longer just a railroad town.
Serving the community, two elevators, two stores, two cafes, a church, hardware store, lumberyard and blacksmith were constructed. By 1915, when Huff was at its height, the area seemed to be promising. However, the town would never reach a population greater than 60.
Slowly, those who had helped build up the town began passing away, or moving from the area, closing up shop as they did.
In 1920, a landmark of the area would see its final patrons. Built by George Markham in 1902, the first store and cafe would close their doors when Markham moved away. Others would follow.”
So, this incredible place overlooking the river is St.Martin. And the great article on Huff history addresses this place directly. Let’s jump back to when the CCC built that old dance hall…
“This hall would also serve an important purpose in the coming years. In 1940, St. Martin’s Catholic church was struck by lighting, causing it to burn down.”
“Over the next seven years, the hall would become a place of worship for those who suddenly found themselves without a spiritual home. As often was the case though, the town came together, gathering field stones, and in 1947, the newly built church opened its doors. It was the church on the hill. Yet, for those in Huff, it was much more.”
