Pileated Woodpecker ( Dryocopus pileatus) Wisconsin's largest woodpecker measuring 19" to 20" inches long. It is the size of a large crow. Pileated woodpeckers are very spooky and are very hard to get close to in the wild. They make such a loud noise when they peck on trees that they sound like a jackhammer. By the size of this hole you can tell they mean business when they make a hole. They hear and see so well that you have to stalk them to get within picture range. I got to about 50 feet from him before he spotted me. I got this picture before he flew away. Picture taken with Canon 50D with 100-400 zoom lens.

It's nesting season. About a week ago the juncos started gathering nesting material in the yard. A few days ago I saw an anna's hummingbird gathering cobwebs. Now the robins are hard at work stripping moss from rocks.. Soon we'll be seeing babies. Robin, backyard Olympia.

What fascinates me here is the dissonance. This is a room designed to evoke the comforts of home or a high-end hotel. But the details betray the fallacy. Look at the wire under the lamp on the left, the lampshade askance on the right. There's no proud homemaker here, no housekeeper trained to turn on the musak and put a chocolate on the pillow. Whoever cleans here also takes out the bedpans. It's an institution, where maintaining a room inhabited by anxiety, hope, and the inexorable realities of sickness and death is just in a day's work. And paradoxically, that very indifference instills a certain serenity.

A quilt on my longarm sewing machine. A long arm is a very big frame that a very fast sewing machine with a very deep neck sit on and can be moved in every direction on. You stretch the quilt over it, rolling up the extra ready to unroll as you need it on on poll and roll up what you finished on another poll as you go. The sewing machine quilted is "sandwiched" on these polls so that the sewing machine or longarm machine has free run to sew all over it. The Longarm Machine i have is only a small model. The frame itself is 12 feet in length, which is standard. The sewing machine is only 18 inches and sews over 2000 stitches a minute. Which is average. They come as big as 30 inches or more and cost more than a really nice car.

I know, more information that anyone needs. :) but it's all good.

I think with the right wardrobe I would have been a Good Homemaker. I grew up in the era of dresses, skirts and blouses warn most of the time and with hosiery. I identify best with these looks. My fond memories of a simpler life.

Family / Hospitality (1) - IMRAN™

I love my siblings. In Pakistan usually for 2 week trips, I generally try to split my time equally at my sister’s and brother’s homes.

My sister, a doctor, medical textbook author, researcher, homemaker, a successful medical lab leader, and more always amazes me. She still finds time to add extra nice touches of hospitality even for my 5-7 days visits.

I’m one of those simple travel sized “toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shaving foam, comb, nail clippers in a zipped pouch” type of guy. This is one of several baskets she sets up for me every trip. It is hard to even take something and spoil the beautiful presentation. 😊

As the beginning of wedding season is here I remember being a little girl and dreaming of having a fancy wedding in a beautiful wedding gown! I fantasized about living in nice suburban house with white picket fence, green grass lawn with flowers everywhere. I would be at home while my spouse was at work and I would bake delicious goodies during the day before preparing for the evening's dinner. I would keep myself busy by cleaning the house, tending to my flower gardens and even having a nice vegetable and fruit garden for fresh foods to cook with! I imagined myself gathering with the other wives in the neighborhood for coffee or lunch and perhaps join a book club or knitting circle. Wearing pretty day dresses and donning a apron while cooking was how I pictured myself. I know it sounds like a simple life but it always seemed so exciting and REAL to me! ,,,,,,,thoughts?

Meet Hiwot.

I met Hiwot and her family - husband and 3 kids, and sis-in-law with her baby - last weekend. Honestly I noticed the lady as a potential subject a little while ago but they were having dinner at a restaurant and its always a little difficult when they are so many family members around. However Hiwot's sharp features, her fancy ear-rings, stylish attire with a nice colorful scarf were a definite eye catching combination. Luckily I met them a few minutes later - but it was close to sunset and getting dark - so wasn't sure if it was a good idea to approach her which I eventually did (encouraged by by little assistant my son Leon who wanted to see Dad in action). Hiwot heard me out and then after a little thinking said she would participate while her family parked themselves on a nearby bench. Though it was dark I thought it may be a good time to try some artificial lighting only to realize I was not carrying batteries for the flash. So I turned to another option I have rarely used - increasing the ISO (to 2000) and then having Leon holding up a silver reflector. This is something new that I have not consciously done before but didn't want to lose the opportunity of a portrait. Hiwot (her name means "Life") and her family are Ethiopians - she's a homemaker busy with three kids 5, 3 and 2 years. Her husband Tsaga (not sure if I got the name right - but means "Grace") was not to keen to be in the pics but I did a couple with the kids who were absolutely naturals (though one of them was a little perplexed why I was doing pics of mommy and was curious to see the result). Her sister-in-law (married to her husband's brother) was accompanying them with a little one. I learned Hivot and she were in fact best friends first and then she married into the family. Definitely looked like a beautiful cosy family. Besides her time spent on raising three kids she loved pursuing a few hobbies - including reading. One thing she would like to change - pat came the reply that indicated "nothing" and that she loved her life as it is.

I did use a little of my recent interest in Photoshop to polish this picture a little - a mix of spot healing, increased contrast, some sharpening and a little dodging to lift the shadows. Feedback welcome.

Thank you Hiwot - absolutely enjoyed meeting you and your lovely family. Hope you liked the pictures I shared. Wish your family a happy holiday season and all the best for a wonderful future.

There's so much character in the homemaker dolls and I wish they got some more love. I have a few ideas for scenes that I want to build in the homemaker scale, like an airport lounge or maybe a restaurant, but until then here's a figbarf.

Being a 1950s homemaker is a lot more fun than being a modern man.

They were transferring two triple deck motorail trailers and one bogie flat for maintenance.

Islington is not as vast as it once was, with many of the buildings now demolished in recent years, making way for a homemaker centre and speciality shops. Though several administration buildings, the traverser and other main repair shops are still standing and undertake a variety of jobs from heavy maintenance to out shopping locomotives in new colour schemes.

The admin buildings are protected by the National Trust because of their historical significance to the area and the state.

Looking back on your life so far, this Holiday Season,

what experience stand out as your 'most' memorable?

Imagine yourself compiling a list of memorable moments

and reflecting on the things you'll have done up to this point.

Whether you see yourself as an Enterpreneur, Adventurer,

Explorer, Homemaker, Artist, Boho, Hobo, or No-Hoper, there's

room for it all when making your list. From the simplest of everyday

pleasures you'd like to make time for, to any lifelong ambitions

you're keen to tackle, writing a list you have accomplished or need

to accomplish is a chance to remind yourself of what genuinely captures

our curiosity, challenges our imagination, and keeps us involved.

Above all, taking a step back from your everyday life, ask yourself

questions and take a fresh look at life-- the past, present and future.

Give yourself the freedom to consider, maybe for the first time, what is

you really want to do with the wonderful life you've got left...

i went to norman to see my girl and spent the night at her apartment. it was side of her that i don't get to see much - her being a 'homemaker' of her little place that she shares with her roommate.

she graduates next week and soon she'll be looking for her own place near where she's taken a job. making a new home for herself. can't wait to share this new experience with her.

A Prayer to St. Martha

O blessed St. Martha, your faith led Jesus to proclaim, “I am the resurrection and the life”; and faith let you see beyond his humanity when you cried out, “Lord I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” With firm hope you said, “I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him”, and Jesus called your brother Lazarus back from the dead. With pure love for Jesus you welcomed him into your home.

Friend and servant of our Saviour, I too am “troubled about many things”. Pray for me that I may grow in faith, hope and love, and that Jesus, who sat at your table, will hear me and grant me a place at the banquet of eternal life. Amen.

In the days of tribalism men bought, traded or stole their wives and I was traded. Before I can take off my dress from another blind date I am forcing my eyes to close. But when they close all I see is a homemaker’s chief concern is to meet her family’s nutritional needs with foods they liked. I never burned a meal but I did forget to smile. He finally gave up and said you can do whatever you want. Just admit you don’t give a damn. I did try, but could not force myself to feel good. You actually have been disapproved of or rejected in spite of your efforts to improve the relationship with the other person. The words repeated as I tried to sleep on his mother’s mattress. It was a gift on our wedding day. I am too weak to heed the advice if you feel mad, pound a pillow. When I dream I think of love’s contractual liberation. Freedom is essentially freedom for self-realisation, and only self-realisation is essentially freedom. And what are you? A human being. And what follows? I should make mistakes. Right. Now sleep.

The above was written my Sarah, my model for this shoot. It's a sort of a borrowed piece because all the words come from the books pictured in the photo. These include a cookbook, a self-help book, and a religion book. :)

I really liked how this worked out, and a special thanks to my new roommate Armond for helping us out with this photo and holding Sarah's legs up. ^__^

Actress stars as Nia Portokalos on the CBS television sitcom "My Big Fat Greek Life." The series is about a woman and her over-the-top Greek family.

My Big Fat Greek Life is an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from February 24 to April 13, 2003. The series is a continuation of the 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding and was produced by Sony Pictures Television and Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions for CBS. The two lead characters' names are changed, from Toula and Ian, to Nia and Thomas. Series star Nia Vardalos also oversaw the show as one of the co-executive producers, along with Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, who made a guest appearance in one episode as Nia's cousin.

Nia Vardalos - Antonia Eugenia "Nia" Vardalos (born September 24, 1962) is a Canadian actress and screenwriter. She starred in and wrote the romantic comedy film My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), which garnered her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, and which went on to spawn a media franchise.

Early life - Vardalos was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 24, 1962. She is the daughter of Greek-Canadian parents Doreen Christakos, a bookkeeper and homemaker, and Constantine "Gus" Vardalos, a land developer who was born in Kalavryta. She attended St. George School and Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg and Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto.

She gained fame with her movie about a woman's struggle to find love in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. First performed as a one-woman show of the same name, the film was a critical and commercial success. The film earned Vardalos an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing, a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. The sleeper hit quickly became one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time, and the number one romantic comedy of all time. Vardalos hosted Saturday Night Live in the fall of 2002.

Vardalos starred in and wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which was released in March 2016. It earned over $60 million domestically from an $18 million budget.

In 2023, Vardalos reprised her role as Toula Portakalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 for which she served as director and screenwriter. That same year, she guest starred in the midseason finale of the first part of season three of the television series Chucky as Evelyn Elliot, a fellow death row inmate in Texas.
