Trail camera footage from my garden…
The European hedgehog , Erinaceus europaeus is not only one of Britain’s favourite small mammals , it’s also one of the oldest , first evolving over fifteen million years ago. Once a common sight in our towns and villages the hedgehog in now under serious decline and threat from development and habitat loss and the use of modern pest control methods. This small spine covered nocturnal mammal is a regular unmistakable visitor to urban gardens and park-lands throughout the spring and summer. Widespread throughout the British mainland and most of western Europe , the European hedgehog is one of 17 species of hedgehog found worldwide.
The Hedgehog is around 20 – 26cm in length , and can weigh between 500g and 2Kg. A hedgehog must build up a reserve of body fat during autumn in order to survive the winter hibernation period . Any animal less than 500g at the beginning of hibernation is unlikely to survive the winter. The hedgehog is covered in around 7000 quills or spikes , the animals main defence against predators. These are attached to a single muscle that can move the spikes in the direction of an aggressor.
The Hedgehog is known in the U.K. As the gardeners friend , in part because of it’s diet of garden pests such a slugs , snails and insect. It used to be considered a culinary delicacy by the British travelling community and baked in clay , thankfully this was a long time ago. It also features in British folklore, literature and British tradions. Probably the most famous example is Beatrix Potters The Tales of Mrs Tiggy Winkle first published in 1906. Hedgehogs make an appearance at the mad hatters tea party in Alice in Wonderland and pass a striking resemblance to the Wombles of Wimbledon Common , a much loved series of books and children’s TV program from the 1970’s. Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut in the gaming world in 1991 and still remains a firm favourite.
Hedgehogs reach sexual maturity in their second year of life, and after this can breed every year until death. Reproduction occurs any time between April and September, but the period of greatest activity, ‘the rut’, occurs in May and June in Britain.Hedgehogs normally have only one litter of four to six babies per year. The baby hedgehogs or Urchins / hoglets are born after a 35 day pregnancy and arrive in the world blind and deaf. The mother raises the urchins in a maternity nest , normally leafs , under a hedgerow or in urban areas under a shed or outbuilding. The urchins are born with their first set of spines covered by a thin skin. As soon as they are born the spines start to come through the skin , by day 14 the eyes and ears have opened and at 8 weeks the urchins are ready to leave their mother and gain independence. The male hedgehog plays no role in raising the young and can be a danger to his own offspring .

For 2019, I set myself the huge challenge of photographing the Boar and Hoglets in the Forest of Dean with a backdrop of Bluebells. A significant challenge given that I admit to knowing very little about the Forest of Dean and even less about the Boars. I've seen Boar in the FoD on many occasions around the popular area such as Cannop and Speech House or along the roads, however I was keen to find some boar in the forest going about their daily lives with totally natural behaviour. Also I could have asked about good locations but I really wanted to work it out myself. So with all that in mind I have spent a number of evenings, walking and cycling over the last few weeks getting to know the Forest and where its Boars are likely to be. I had almost given up hope as Boar with Piglets/Hoglets are off like a flash, deep into thick woodland if they get any scent of you. Boar are also very good at hiding. They rest/sleep under conifer trees. I have stopped by such a tree and then jumped out of my skin when a Boar rushed out a few seconds later. Today, I sat down on a fallen tree trunk to have a coffee break when 2 Hoglets appeared from the other end of the fallen tree and quickly ran off. I'm also used to more open spaces when photographing wildlife be it birds, hares, deer etc so the Forest is tough as you cannot see very far unless you kneel down and look under the lowest branches. So if you have read all the above, many thanks.
Recently I have leant a lot about Boars by being with them. One observation from today, if you hear running water in the forest it might be a number of Boar and a creche of hoglets slowly moving through the leaf litter rather than a stream. So sit down and wait to see what emerges, I did that and at one point I didn't know which way to look!
Put simply, a very rewarding day and a challenge fulfilled.

The female Hedgehog that now frequents our garden is beginning to build a nest under our shed, but not before one of the urban foxes decided to scent mark her. It seems the foxes will scent mark just about anything in our garden.
Thought it couldn't get any better than having a Hedgehog in our garden, but our excitement has now doubled , and they look to be courting (three times the excitement).
Time to air out the old bedsit under our shed as the second hedgehog (suspected male) spent some time in there checking out the digs

Busy foraging in the early morning dampness after the previous day's rain, this young Warthog still looks like a slender little hoglet. However, you can see that its "warts" are developing already, although whether it ever learns to control that fly-swat of a tail is a different matter.
A new young hoglet has started appearing each night to eat the mealworms put out in the garden.
Originally he arrived as the sun went down, but appears to be getting more eager to turn up each day.

The Hedgehog – An Gráinneog (Erinaceus europaeus)
The hedgehog is a familiar species in the Irish countryside. It is a small creature - weighing between 600-900 grammes and is about 25 cm in length. Its back is covered with over 5,000 brown, grey, and white coloured spines and it has coarse hair on its belly and its face. When a hedgehog feels threatened, it rolls itself into a ball and its spines help protect it from many predators.
Habitat & Diet
The hedgehog habitat is mainly hedgerows, woodlands and meadows, but they are also commonly found in sub-urban gardens. Within their habitat, they normally have a few sleeping nests. As they are nocturnal creatures, it is not until after dusk that they leave these nests to forage for food. The hedgehog rustles through leaf litter looking for insects such as beetles and caterpillars, and invertebrates including earthworms and slugs. They also feed on fruits and berries, especially in the early autumn when these food sources are readily available.
Hibernation
During the winter months, when food supplies become more scarce, hedgehogs enter into a period of hibernation. Hibernation is akin to a period of deep sleep. The hedgehogs body temperature drops to match the temperature of its surroundings and its heart rate and metabolism slow down. It lives off its fat reserves until the end of hibernation which is usually in March/April.
Breeding
Hedgehogs breed between March and October. After a gestation period of about 32 days, three to five hedgehog ‘pups’ are born. Within about two weeks, the pups’ eyes start to open and spines begin to appear on their backs. They are independent at six weeks old and as hedgehogs are solitary creatures, the pups then go their separate ways.

Hedgehogs have poor eyesight but a great sense of smell - so good that they can even smell the scent of an earthworm underground
Hedgehogs can swim but can become trapped in pools and ponds with steep sides
As many as 500 fleas live amongst a hedgehogs’ spines
Hedgehogs can wander for up to 3 km a night in search of food
Young hedgehogs are called ‘pups’ or ‘hoglets’
The Latin for ‘hedgehog’ is Erinaceus which means ‘spiky wall’
The Irish word for hedgehog is ‘gráinneog’ - meaning ‘horrible one’
Hedgehogs occasionally perform an unusual ritual of ‘self-anointing’. This occurs when they come across a strong or an unfamiliar scent. The hedgehog will lick and bite the source and then form scented frothy saliva which it pastes over its spines with its tongue. Some believe that this ‘anointing’ camouflages the hedgehog with the scent of the area and possibly provides a poison or a source of infection to predators that come into contact with its spines.

call it whatever you like!! Came across 15 of these ranging in size and colour just meandering across a track in the Forest.....a fantastic sight but they were a bit too tame...they should be more aware of humans!!
So about two weeks ago I saw a hedgehog in the garden out in the daylight. I know it's not right to see them in daylight but it looked lively, healthy and a very good size. It was pulling up plants from the garden and taking them under the shed. I could only think it was possibly nest building. I borrowed a trail camera from my partner and a couple of nights ago I caught on video some disturbing scenes with an adult hedgehog and a hoglet (approx. 3 weeks old). By the morning the hoglet didn't make it (you can see the hoglet in the video all curled up). This video also captured the female pushing the male around with some force. She was not happy about something. Not sure what this was all about (sorry the time on the video is about an hour out). Hoping there are more hoglets under the shed.

The Algerian Hedgehog is one of the few mammals that inhabit the Maltese Islands. There are 17 species of hedgehogs in the world, four of them in Africa. The Algerian Hedgehog is found from Morocco to Libya and is the only African species of hedgehog that is found outside Africa. It was introduced in Spain and France and on the islands off the coast of Africa, such as the Canary Islands and Malta. Its Maltese name is derived from Arabic (Qunfud) and the Maltese word was first listed by De Soldanis. There are various Maltese expressions which compare one to the hedgehog - none of them are very complimentary! The English name was coined in the Middle Ages, and, as the name implies, means a hog that lives in hedges. The hedgehog’s diet usually consists of a variety of insects and snails, and occasionally some small vertebrates. Like other mammals, the hedgehog relies on scent both to find its mate and to detect food. Hedgehogs often make purring noises when they are content. Hedgehogs are unmistakable because of their shape and spines, which are essentially hollow hairs of stiff keratin filled with pockets of air. The spines act as a means of defence against its predators. The hedgehog rolls itself into a tight ball when threatened, with its spines pointing outwards. Hedgehogs also raise their quills and make hissing noises when alarmed. Not much is known about the breeding biology of wild hedgehogs, primarily because they are active mostly at night. Their breeding season runs between October and March. The gestation period of the Algerian hedgehog ranges from 30 to 40 days. A female can bear between three and 10 hoglets and can have two litters in a season. Hoglets are born blind, but gain vision quickly. The spines begin to erupt from underneath the skin and cover their body within 36 hours after birth. Hedgehogs reach sexual maturity at about eight to ten weeks of age and they do not mate for life or engage in pair-bonding. In the wild, the Algerian Hedgehog lives up to seven years. Many have their life cut short on our roads, especially country roads, when they are run over by cars. It does not require much of an effort to avoid killing these animals and efforts should be made to avoid them. Stopping and waiting for them to cross the road is the best option. Jan found three of the little things in the garden. One was already dead and the other died shortly after. We reckon the mother has been run over.
So this one has been taken into custody and is living in Jan's kitchen in my cat basket eating Monty's food. You can see how tiny it is by comparing with the standard size marmalade jar lid that its water is in.
Jan is in regular contact with the hedgehog rescue people. Apparently they are inundated with orphans at the moment - they think it is the wet weather. So they have asked her to keep it.
The really important thing (out of several important things) is never to give them cow's milk. Despite bread and milk being the traditional thing it can kill them. Cat food is the best stuff.
If you see a hedgehog in daylight something is wrong. If it is staggering or shaking it is probably cold - they get hypothermia quite easily. Put it on a well wrapped hot water bottle in a high sided box.
