I bought this geranium in June 2003 from a nursery in Tissington in Derbyshire. It sat in a pot for a year, and refused to grow, so I decided to plant it out in a flower bed. It then promptly sulked, so I moved it to somewhere I thought it might prefer. As a result of that it got smaller and smaller until I feared I would lose it altogether, so I put it back in a flower pot. Oh no......, not happy with that either, so last autumn I repotted it into something bigger. Well, lo and behold, this Spring it started to grow, and look interested in life after all. A flower stalk began to emerge and I watched over it eagerly. Then one morning I went out and found that a slug had come in the night and nearly munched its way completely through my prize flower stem! Quickly I splinted it with three cocktail sticks and some velcro tape, and doused the pot with slug pellets. The slugs gave up but the plant decided to carry on, despite the bandages.

Today the first flower has opened, and I must say it was worth waiting six years for! There are lots of buds now....I will take another shot when a few more come out.

Many magicians published explanations of their simpler tricks in books. Jean Eugéne Robert-Houdin, considered by many to be the “father of modern magic,” wrote several books with instructions on stage conjuring and several card tricks. Harry Houdini (who derived his stage name from Robert-Houdin) also published several books explaining how he escaped handcuffs and tied ropes.

These particular books were written by Professor Hoffman (a pseudonym of Angelo Lewis) and explain the principles of magic.

Harry Houdini was most well known for escapist tricks. He was often put in handcuffs, tied up, or put into a straightjacket and then placed into a trunk with several chains or locks. A curtain would hide him momentarily, and when the current was removed, Houdini would have escaped all of the locks and be standing beside the trunk.

This particular lock was used in the Milk Can Escape, one of his signature tricks. Houdini would be submerged into a can filled with water, and the lid would be padlocked in place. Houdini than had just a few minutes to either escape or drown.
