"Rooster with a beer standing on a pile of hotdogs."
"yeah, I think I can draw that."

Empty rail lines always con jour a vision of Jack Kerouac's America where being on the road was an expression of individual freedom--no families, no home with a rent or a mortgage, no bills to pay--a sort of counter culture version of the American Dream. Yeah, there were the hardships involved with riding in boxcars, panhandling and living in shanty-towns but there was also a romance about the rails that bespoke of the escape from routine and the banality of the middle class life. I jumped a train once between Needles CA and Albuquerque NM and it was a thrilling experience. But I have to tell you, hopping on a moving train is a lot harder than it looks and is definitely an art for the younger person. And in the end, I was still me with the same old responsibilities and stresses as everyone else. Go figure.

Does it take much of a man to see his whole life go down,
To look up on the world from a hole in the ground,
To wait for your future like a horse that's gone lame,
To lie in the gutter and die with no name? (Dylan 1963)
(El bosque en el bolsillo y en el té).

I'm almost certain that is what this spider is. So creepy...we have a lot of rock work and they absolutely adore it!!! All I have to do is go lift up a rock and there they are...defending their humble home!!! Yuck...and they are not afraid of you...they get right out on the front lines of battle! LOL I guess their bite has a flesh eating venom....I don't mess around any spider territory...believe me!!! :P Sorry to put up a creepy picture...but it's good to know your spiders!! See the two white fangs?
You know I used to work for some taxonomists here for awhile...that proves I do like the field of bugs!!! LOL Hey...check out the fangs on this one!! The eyes also make the spider look less scary to me!

Hobo
She drifts in plain sight,
a threadbare ghost with eyes
like storm-battered coasts.
People pass, see only
a shadow, a shrug.
But inside she holds
the weight of cities,
the silence of roads,
and the secret fire
of someone who chose
to be unknown...

This is our new foster dog, Hobo. He is going to be more of a project than a quick adoption turnaround. He has some aggression issues -- he will snap if someone goes near his food or treats -- and will sometimes snap when startled. But in the last few weeks he has been picked up as a stray, had to stay in a shelter, got moved (twice -- one in a 5-hour drive), and got neutered (and is still in pain from it.) So I am giving him some leeway in the nervous and scared departments now. He is very affectionate to Nick and I most of the time, throwing his 70 pounds up against us and cuddling. He also gives me hugs by putting his paws on my shoulders and licking my face.
We do have the option to return him, but we want to wait and see how he does in a stable home environment. If he progresses hopefully we can find him a home.
