The wonderful old Highfield House historic site from my black and white shot the other day, but this time in glorious colour!
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Many of the skeletons in the Bone Hall have been on view since 1881—first in what is now known as the Arts and Industries Building, and since the 1960s in their current form. The skeletons represent an unparalleled study collection of every major group of vertebrate animals. (3/27/2022)
Acton Burnell Castle, Shropshire on Monday 17th July 2023. An interior view of the 13th century building with window and doorway openings hinting at what the internal structure might have been like. Despite the name, the site was more of a fortified manor house than an actual castle.
Every step at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is a journey through time, connecting past and present. Housed in a historic Beaux-Arts building that once served as the city’s Main Library, the museum now stands as a gateway to the rich and diverse artistic traditions of Asia. From ancient sculptures to contemporary masterpieces, these halls echo the stories of civilizations, cultures, and creativity that have shaped the world for centuries. As you ascend these stairs, you walk in the footsteps of history, discovering the beauty and depth of Asian heritage, preserved and celebrated in the heart of San Francisco.
On May 16, 1888, the inventor Emile Berliner presents the gramophone and records to the public for the first time at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
For the year-challenge on www.RogueBricks.de the participants have to build the whole year something about history before the year 1900.
For my first MOC for this challenge I decided to build an invention I am still using somehow today: a gramophone.
Arch of Titus in the Forum, Rome. This is especially interesting in the detailed relief on the south panel showing the spoils of the temple of Jerusalem being carried off by the Roman soldiers.

There are quite a few 'lost' villages in Dorset. Knowlton is marked by the church still standing whilst there are no really old houses nearby. However, aerial photography has revealed that the settlement used to be a couple of hundred metres away down along the River. It is out of sight behind and below the far earth embankment.
An earth embankment around the church I hear you say?? Made of chalk rubble, it is more clearly seen in the photo below and encircles the church and is most unusual. I have seen plenty of ancient banks and ditches and plenty of very old churches. However, i don't think I've ever seen the two together before.
It seems that it is a very ancient feature, pre-dating the church itself which is usually described as 'Norman' and dating from 12th century. However, at least one of the windows is Anglo-Saxon in shape (around 400 - 1000 AD) so maybe the Normans added to an existing structure? The surrounding 'henge' is Neolithic and roughly dates from 2000 - 3000BC. There seems little doubt that the Christian church will have visibly symbolised moving from paganism to Christianity. Nobody is quite sure what the henge was for but in this instance it seems very unlikely to have been defensive. One suggestion is that is where Druids will have gathered for ceremonies.
BNSF 674, a 1994 graduate of GE's Erie plant pulls out of the Topeka Shops. Obviously, both the engine and the shops were both built as Santa Fe properties, but decades (God, I'm old) past the merger, the two are both serving the BNSF well.
Of note to the diesel nerds here, are that the four GE's present here show a chronological display of BNSF's paint history; Warbonnet, H1, H2 (repainted H1), and H3.

We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is already disappearing.

La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, located in the Andes Mountains. The old town of La Paz, also known as "El Alto", is steeped in history and culture. The narrow, cobbled streets of El Alto are lined with colonial-style buildings and offer a glimpse into the city's rich past. Plaza Murillo, with its dilapidated colonial buildings, hints at a rich and prosperous past. - La Paz, Bolivia

While I was visiting London, I took the opportunity to photograph one of the most interesting and famous museums: the Natural History Museum.
It was full of people and from the colossal entrance I could already imagine the wonders that were inside.
So, I stopped to catch this huge scenery that fascinated me, and then I continued my visit inside the museum.
The written history of Artziniega begins in the year 1272, when the King of Castile, Alfonso X El Sabio, granted Artziniega the letter-puebla. The Villa would be governed from now on by the jurisdiction of Bizkaia the natural one of the land, and for economic and tax matters by the jurisdiction of Vitoria. Until Don Tello's death, it belonged to Bizkaia, but upon his death, in 1370, he handed it over to his brother King Enrique II, who a year later handed it over to Pedro López de Ayala, the Chancellor, along with the valleys of Orozko and Llodio. While it belonged to Bizkaia, the Lord appointed the mayors, and later the town did so in an open council.

On a recent trip to Germany, I spent a lot of time hiking/walking in the and around the towns we were visiting. This day we were with friends at Mehling Heide near Kaiserslautern.
Probably the most photographed part of Fountains Abbey because of it's architecture, it is quite a challenge especially as the lighting depends on the weather that day, I tried processing my image as a black & white but decided to keep it a colour image as it shows the effect better...
