Next we remove the shims and verify the hinges swing properly. If adjustment needed, re-shim the shutter, remove one screw, adjust the hardware and insert screw into remaining screw hole and fresh wood beneath. Re-test.

This hinge is still in place on one of the massive flow control gates in the ruins of the Arden Salt Works. The gate controlled flow of salt brine from the "crescent" distribution basin near the crystallization ponds.

Hinged together through friendship

Share Our Strength's Hinges of Hope Chef's Tour was held at the newly opened St. Joseph Center's culinary training facility in Venice, CA, this past March. The facility was built with funds from Taste of the Nation and will provide free child care and nutrition to impoverished pre-schoolers and toddlers. Its culinary training program will also give free job training to disadvantaged adults so they can seek work in the food and beverage industry.

Chefs on tour for this Hinges of Hope stop were Mary Sue Milliken, Fred Eric, Akasha Richmond, Jill Davie, Kazuto Matsusaka and Evan Kleiman.

What is it? - Phillips Countersink screw (joins a hinge and door)

What does it do? - used to fasten objects together

How big is it (dimensions, mass)? – (screw) 3cm x 2cm, 5g; (hinge) 10cm x 7cm, 10g; (door) 50cm x 90cm, 25g

How does what it does influence its design? - The entire feature is a hinge screwed on to a wooden door which is used to close and open a flap to a compartment. The screws limited strength and size, the hinge and door’s lightness in weight and stiffness is what mostly influences its design. The relatively small screws can only provide and penetrate a limited amount of fastening ability. In order for these screws to be applied correctly, the metal hinge and the wooden door must be light weight but stiff; the flap must also be made out of easily penetrable material.

What material is it made from? How can you tell? - The part is made mostly from brass which is indicated by the chipped paint exposing the brownish color. Also, the metal part is slightly magnetic which indicates that it has traces of other ferrous metals. The sheet metal is made of iron and the door is wood.

What processes were used to make the part? - The screws were made by heading, thread rolling, and coating. The wire or rod was cut to the proper length for the type of screw being made. Heading produces the head of the screw. The shape of the die in the machine dictates what features are pressed into the screw head. Then other end was threaded and finally was blackened to prevent corrosion. The metal hinge is made from sheet metal (blanked, punched, and shaped). The wood was formed and polished.

Why do you think that this material and these processes were chosen? (Why does this approach make sense?) – Small, effective, strong, inexpensive

In what quantities do you think that it is made (single, a few, thousands, millions)? - Made in millions and of different designs, shapes and material
