I met them in the streets of Oporto, it was such a great luck and surprise... wow !!! Oporto - May 2000.
Young Maasai child and sitter. Don't know if it's a boy or girl but I think the pants are on backwards.
Hand held 20D and 28-135mm lens.
It was rather windy on Lake Michigan at Grand Haven, Michigan, on the day of my visit. That made for good conditions for parakiting.
I watched this guy with his kite as it took him to and fro, back and forth, all over the water not far from the beach. In time he was joined by another skier. Or are they called kiters?
Him made California Rolls the other night. They may not be as good as the ones you'd get from a sushi bar, but they're good enough. Mmmm.

My friend Maria Sanchez (RIP). I recently wrote her son to tell him what: a wonderful woman she was and how beloved she was by her neighbors. To tell the truth, in the years that I knew her I got to love her a great deal. She reminded me so much of my own mother.
She’d tell me stories of her life in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. In the 1930s and 40s she earned money by making delicate embroidery and laundering the clothes of servicemen at Ramey Air force base. She once told me that her family had survived the 1918 Puerto Rico tsunami which struck the western part of the island. Her fisherman father remembered being amazed at the huge quantity of fish that covered the tree tops like leaves. www.usc.edu/dept/tsunamis/caribbean/webpages/1918prindex....
Maria was a very nurturing person who also took time out for herself to make beautiful drawings, water colors and other handicrafts. She was a quiet driving force behind a 9/11 memorial quilt that was presented to the firefighter widows of the local firehouse. She lived her spirituality day to day. Maria gave a lot to her community by volunteering and just giving a hand when no one was looking.
She loved children....her own and her neighbors. She helped raise kids of different colors, nationalities and ethnicities....although she never learned to speak much English. Years later they would still hug and greet her as mama’. On one occasion she noted with great pride that a little Black boy she had cared for grew up to become a burly NYC policeman who showered her with hugs and kisses when he came visiting. In another life she would have been an artist, a teacher or perhaps both. In her home one would find beautiful curios and nick-knacks. Her children loved her and cared for her. As I write this, I miss her and pray for her continued rest in peace. Gracias Maria.

sanctuary and sanctity in the driven rain and storms today.
next to abdul kader's kramat is the pyramidical tomb over the grave of elisabet jacoba akkerman that died in 1817. it is unclear when abdul kader died. RA stands for Radhe Allaho-ann which means 'may Allah be pleased with him or her". often referred to noble companions of Allah. there is little info as to why the two graves are in one site.
A Kramat is a shrine or mausoleum that has been built over the burial place of a Muslim who's particular piety and practice of the teachings of Islam is recognised by the community. I have been engaged in documenting these sites around Cape Town over several visits at different times over the last few years. They range widely from graves marked by an edge of stones to more elaborate tombs sheltered by buildings of various styles. They are cultural markers that speak of a culture was shaped by life at the Cape and that infuses Cape Town at large.
In my searches used the guide put out by the Cape Masaar Society as a basic guide to locate some recognised sites. Even so some were not that easy to find.
In the context of the Muslims at the Cape, historically the kramats represented places of focus for the faithful and were/are often places of local pilgrimage. When the Dutch and the VOC (United East India Company aka Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) set up a refuelling station and a settlement at the Cape, Muslims from their territories in the East Indies and Batavia were with them from the start as soldiers, slaves and “Vryswarten" (freemen). As the settlement established itself as a colony the Cape became a useful place to banish political opponents from the heart of their eastern empire. Some exiles were of royal lineage and there were also scholars amongst them. One of the most well known of these exiles was Sheik Yusuf who was cordially received by Govenor van der Stel as befitted his rank (he and his entourage where eventually housed on an estate away from the main settlement so that he was less likely to have an influence over the local population), others were imprisoned for a time both in Cape Town and on Robben island. It is said that the first Koran in the Cape was first written out from memory by Sheik Yusuf after his arrival. There were several Islamic scholars in his retinue and these men encouraged something of an Islamic revival amoung the isolated community. Their influence over the enslaved “Malay” population who were already nominally Muslim was considerable and through the ministrations of other teachers to the underclasses the influence of Islam became quite marked. As political opponents to the governing powers the teachers became focus points for escaped slaves in the outlying areas.
Under the VOC it was forbidden to practice any other faith other than Christianity in public which meant that there was no provision for mosques or madrasas. The faith was maintained informally until the end of the C18th when plans were made for the first mosque and promises of land to be granted for a specific burial ground in the Bo Kaap were given in negotiations for support against an imminent British invasion. These promises were honoured by the British after their victory.
There is talk of a prophecy of a protective circle of Islam that would surround Cape Town. I cannot find the specifics of this prophecy but the 27 kramats of the “Auliyah” or friends of Allah, as these honoured individuals are known, do form a loose circle of saints. Some of the Auliyah are credited with miraculous powers in legends that speak of their life and works. Within the folk tradition some are believed to be able to intercede on behalf of supplicants (even though this more part of a mystical philosophy (keramat) and is not strictly accepted in mainstream contemporary Islamic teaching) and even today some visitors may offer special prayers at their grave sites in much the same way as Christians might direct prayer at the shrine of a particular saint.
Saw him the same night I met George Romero (seperate cities though)...didn't exactly mean or plan on seeing him, just hoped to because he was at a seperate event (that cost a fortune just for a normal-sounding concert...cheapest tix was $45...not bad, the next cheapest was $75..no thanks, the NEXT was $145...F*** THAT!!!).
After an amazing day, and being very thankful for everything....i take the train back to where I parked...to find my car had been towed (while I was an hour away from home...and 12:30am)...sooo had to do the whole "get a ride home, then get it in the morning" meaning lots of time/$$$ spent.
Surprisingly I wasnt even mad, I just thought "you know what, shit happens, yea this really sucks, but theres far worse things to worry about"...so, sat in the cold for about an hour 1/2 before being picked up at 2:00am lol. LONG DAY.
Whenever I see him, the only thing I can think is that he is perfection. Whether he's sleeping, dancing, sitting, talking, crying, laughing, making love, what-have-you - the reoccurring thought is that he is perfection. Flaws and favorables combined. His skin, the slope of his shoulders, the spine and meat stretched over his rib bones, the patch of hair on his stomach, his fingers, toes and tongue - I could go on for a lot longer than you might like to read. I'm not sure I could ever explain what I feel when I see him standing across a room sometimes. It's not a constant feeling, I don't think that's what love is, honestly. It comes in waves, pangs, and enters my thoughts occasionally. He wasn't what I was looking for, but he was what I found and exactly what I needed. I think maybe someday everyone will know exactly the feeling I'm talking about. I think love is the pangs, the subtle thoughts, the knowing, the reoccurring realization that you absolutely feel something so strongly for someone, that it completely washes over you. You see the innocence, the strength, the weakness - all of it, and you know it's more than what you ever wanted, or expected. I hope someday someone gets a photo of that feeling, when the exact thought hits me. When you see my eyes, you'll know. He knows, you will know, too.

Most of my time lately has been spent working on the studio, working on Michelle and I's upcoming competition, and working on our recent marketing package release. I haven't done a lot of client work yet this year so much of my uploads have been personal work.
This is my step son Adrik, the girls ADORE their brother but as you can see, he hasn't found that same appreciation yet lol!
