Sydney, AU is such a beautiful city to visit. With so many sites to see throughout the central business district many can be easily overlooked. The destination on this day for me was St. Mary's Cathedral (in the background, top, left); I have another view on Flickr that is more of a traditional photograph of that wonderful building.
The walk towards the church through Hyde Park provides so many visuals that it is easy for tourists to miss them and walk right on by. The power I find in photography is how it allows me to go back & re-visit what I have seen - and what I have missed. This wide-angle photo is intentionally highly-processed and intentionally over-saturated to force viewers to look closely, to try see everything that is going on in the shot and around the city scape.

Below is a highly edited Wikipedia entry as background to this photo. There are somewhere around 500 fountains throughout the villa and two are shown here. A the top is The Fountain of the Organ (Fontana dell’Organo) that supplies water to The Fountain of Neptune (Fontana di Nettuno) located below. In front is the fish pond. This is a vertical panorama that I could not quite straighten out. Remarkably there are no other visitors visible to give a sense of scale. I am using one eye today as I had cataract surgery yesterday so I may have not noticed some of the defects. I did see a light rainbow in the lower left fountain and took the liberty of enhancing it.
The Villa d'Este is a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, near Rome, famous for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden and especially for its profusion of fountains. It is now an Italian state museum.
The Villa was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este (1509–1572), grandson of Pope Alexander VI through his mother Lucrezia Borgia. Thanks to his ecclesiastical and royal connections, he became one of the wealthiest cardinals of the time. He was five times a candidate for Pope, but was never selected.
He had he position of Governor of Tivoli and with it came an official residence located in a former convent of the Benedictine order. The residence was not large enough for the enormous household of a Cardinal as prominent as d'Este, but it did have a spectacular view of the countryside below, including Hadrian's villa. and an abundant natural water supply for fountains and gardens. D'Este commissioned a new villa and garden which would exceed anything the Romans had built. He obtained an abundant supply of marble and statuary from the ruins of Hadrian's villa.
Between 1563 and 1565, a huge amount of earth was excavated and used to construct new terraces; arcades, grottos, niches, and nymphaeums. The nearby river Aniene was diverted to furnish water for the complex system of pools, water jets, channels, fountains, cascades and water games.
The Fountain of the Organ (‘’Fontana dell’Organo’’) is one of the most famous features of the garden; it was described and imitated throughout Europe. Work on the masonry structure began in 1566. One of the designers, Calude Venard, invented the ingenious mechanism of the water organ, which was installed in 1571.
The fountain was the first of its kind, and astonished everyone who heard it. The clever mechanical design enabled the falling water to play musical notes and complete tunes. When Pope Gregory XIII visited the villa in 1572, accompanied by his court of cardinals and princes, he insisted on inspecting the interior of the fountain, to learn if someone wasn't concealed inside making the music.
It now has 144 pipes, and is controlled by a cylinder, operated by the water, which can play four pieces of late Renaissance music for a total of four minutes.
Directly below the Fountain of the Organ, and receiving the water from the upper fountain, is the Fountain of Neptune, a work created in the 20th century to replace a garden landmark which had deteriorated.
The space was originally occupied by a rocky cascade, created in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was commissioned by Cardinal Rinado I d’Este as a background for the lateral axis of the garden, unfinished by Cardinal Ippolito. Bernini's plan called for a waterfall from the Fountain of the Organ which leaped over the grottoes of the Sibyls, then cascaded down a rocky slope to a lake decorated with reefs and statues.
Unfortunately, the cascade was entirely neglected for two centuries, dry, crumbling and overgrown with vegetation. In the 1930s the architect Attilio Rossi created the present fountain, using what remained of Bernini's cascade. Tthe grotto contained a 16th-century torso of a statue of Neptune, which had originally been intended for an unfinished fountain of the seas.
I can highly recommend the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G. There's a very unique rendering about it, it positively glows at f/1.4 and the bokeh just slips gently away. Genuinely stunning. Many will consider it to be a portrait lens but frankly it's absolutely gorgeous on any subject matter. Ignore the negative reviews, they're written by philistines who wouldn't know an artistic lens even if it was delivered to them on a cavalcade on swans.
This is one of the most highly photographed spots. Each time I come to the Big Island I will drive here. Direct out of camera, no post processing. Compare with the next photo at the same location using a CPL.

Off down to London, got this highly commended little Bee into the 2013 BWPA book, so quite pleased, I get to see Chris Packham who is presenting the awards and am meeting a few Flickr friends as well. Taking my camera down with me so hoping to get a few photos as well.
I think next year I will do more preparation for the contest, this year I left it all to the last minute and didn't prepare my images properly, so lessons learnt from that :0) It is also a shame they don't accept stacked images, for some reason composite or merged frames are a no no :0(

Hamburger Wappen
The Hamburger Wappen ("Hamburg coat of arms") is a highly unusual rock feature on the Teufelsmauer ("Devil's Wall") rock formation not far from Timmenrode in the Harz Mountains in central Germany.
The appearance of this sandstone formation, with its three steep, soaring pinnacles of rock, recalls the coat of arms of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg with its three towers.
Next to it is a rock cave known as the Kuhstall ("Cow shed"). Not far from the Hamburger Wappen is control point no. 74 on the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network.

Hamburger Wappen oder Drei Zinnen (ca. 252 m ü. NN) heißt ein besonders markantes Felsgebilde der Teufelsmauer im nördlichen Harzvorland unweit von Timmenrode im Landkreis Harz, Sachsen-Anhalt.
Die drei steilaufragenden Felsnadeln der Sandsteinformation ähneln dem Wappen der Hansestadt Hamburg mit dessen drei Türmen. Unterhalb der Felsformation erstreckt sich auf der Südseite ein kleiner Talkessel. Auf seiner Südseite liegen die Kuhställe genannten Felshöhlen. Gegenüber, am südöstlichen Rand des Kessels, erstreckt sich die Höhle Teufelsloch an deren Außenseite die Rittertreppe entlangführt. Auf der Nordseite führt ein Pfad bis an die Zinnen heran. Über die in den Fels geschlagene 15stufige Zinnentreppe ist ein Aufstieg zwischen die Zinnen möglich.
Am Fuß der Südseite befindet sich ein mit finanzieller Unterstützung der Stadt Hamburg angebrachtes Wappen Hamburgs. Bemerkenswert ist ein am westlichen Rand der Felsformation zu findende Darstellung eines Vogels.
Die Felsformation Hamburger Wappen ist als Nr. 74 in das System der Stempelstellen der Harzer Wandernadel einbezogen.
Im Jahr 2016 war das Hamburger Wappen ein Drehort für den deutschen Märchenfilm Das singende, klingende Bäumchen.

Photography’s new conscience
The Spanish Synagogue (Hebrew: בית הכנסת הספרדי, Czech: Španělská synagoga, German: die Spanische
Synagoge) is the newest synagogue in the area of the so-called Jewish Town, yet paradoxically, it was built at the place of the presumably oldest synagogue, Old School (also known as Altshul). The synagogue is built in Moorish Revival Style. Only a little park with a modern statue of famous Prague writer Franz Kafka (by Jaroslav Róna) lies between it and the church of Holy Spirit. Today, the Spanish Synagogue is administered by the Jewish Museum in Prague.
The Spanish Synagogue is not the first synagogue at the site. Before it there stood probably the oldest synagogue in Prague Jewish Town, Altschule. In the second half of 19th century, the capacity of the Altschule did not suffice. The modernist faction in the community, which renovated it in 1837 for the purpose of moderately reformed services, therefore decided to demolish the synagogue in 1867 and one year later it was replaced by the new, Spanish Synagogue. Its name presumably refers to the style in which it was built, Moorish Revival style, which was inspired by the art of Arabic period of Spanish history (this name was not always prevalent, in the beginnings it was usually called by German-speaking Jews Geistgasse-Tempel, i.e. Temple in Holy Spirit Street). The architectural plans were designed by Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann and Josef Niklas (an imposing interior decoration).
In 1935, a functionalistic building, designed by Karel Pecánek, was added to the synagogue. Till the Second World War it served to the Jewish Community as a hospital. The synagogue used the space of the new building as well; there was a vestibule and a winter oratory in it. Since 1935, the appearance of the synagogue remained essentially unchanged.
During the Second World War, confiscated properties of Czech Jewish Communities were stored in the synagogue, e.g. the furniture from other synagogues. Ten years after the war, the synagogue was handed over to the Jewish Museum and in 1958–1959 it was completely restored inside. In the following year an exposition of synagogue textiles was opened there. In the 1970s the building was neglected and after 1982 it remained closed. The restoration started only after the Velvet revolution. Completely restored to its former beauty, the synagogue was re-opened with a ceremony in 1998.

Lily of the Valley became the national flower of Finland in 1967.
The Norwegian municipality Lunner has a Lily of the Valley in its coat-of-arms.
It is also the official flowers of many fraternities and sororities.

Piaffe. A highly collected cadenced trot in place, the horse 'sits' on its quarters with the front free moving. With clear rhythm and impulsion, and used to develop the levade.
I remember listening to seminar after seminar about the movement and scouring the internet to watch the professionals at work, making sure to keep my mind open and fresh while reading. Sighing as I tried to stomach watching the good and the bad looking for examples to work from, having contacted my trainer the night before to schedule some time to work on the movement.
Training the movement is simple, yet needs consistency and takes a lot of strength from the horse to carry the weight evenly in carriage.
This was the photo of a very big, very good first try at it in hand. It was clear to me then that Absinthe had a talent, and that I would have many more long mornings working to build him up to continue the movement forwards,
as they say, you never stop learning.

This view is of two different layers of rock forming spectacular cliffs some 100m high in the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah.
The pale blocky and angular material at the top is the Shinarump Conglomerate, a highly-resistant coarse-grained sandstone and pebble conglomerate, sometimes forming a caprock as in this instance because of its hardness, cementation, and erosion resistance. It was laid down in the late Triassic period.
Beneath is the distinctive reddish-orange, evenly-bedded, Moenkopi siltstone, laid down in the early Triassic. This is a much more friable material than the Shinarump. This is very clear above, where the hard Shinarump protects the softer, more easily eroded Moenkopi. It is likely that the Moenkopi erodes out from under the Shinarump, elements of which then break off.
Note that even after eroding out of the cliff the two types retain their erosional properties - the fine material making up the scree slopes appears almost entirely to be Moenkopi. Sliding down the scree and at the bottom of the slope are boulders of the resistant Shinarump.
Capitol Reef National Park encompasses the Waterpocket Fold, a warp in the Earth's crust that is 65 million years old. It is the largest exposed monocline in North America. In this fold, multiple layers of earth folded over each other in an S-shape. This warp, probably caused by the same colliding continental plates that created the Rocky Mountains, has weathered and eroded over millennia to expose layers of rock and fossils. The park is filled with brilliantly-coloured sandstone cliffs, gleaming white domes, and contrasting layers of stone and earth.

We spent a fair bit of time exploring the Kemenuh Butterfly Park in Bali, Indonesia. I can highly recommend it if you are in Bali and in the Ubud area.
- www.kevin-palmer.com - Like clockwork, every night just after sunset the foxes came out at my campsite. But I couldn’t get any pictures because they were too fast and there wasn’t enough light. They are unafraid of humans, and visitors to Channel Islands National Park are required to store their food in “fox boxes” while away from camp. Finally on my last morning on Santa Rosa Island, I found this guy out hunting for mice near the pier. Much smaller than most foxes at about the size of a housecat, the island fox is found nowhere else in the world. They have always lived on this isolated island chain off the coast of California and each island has a unique subspecies. But in 2000 they faced extinction with as few as 14 individuals remaining on Santa Rosa. Their fate was closely linked with that of our national bird. When bald eagles died off, golden eagles took their place instead. While bald eagles primarily ate fish, golden eagles preyed on foxes which devastated their population. But after relocating the eagles and many years of conservation efforts, today the island foxes are thriving once again.

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to the oldest trees in the world, bristlecone pines. Some of these living trees exceed 4000 years of age and exhibit spectacular growth forms of twisted and beautifully colored wood.
This is nowhere near a perfect photo. Editing helped it out a lot. This experience has humbled me in many ways. I still have a lot to learn concerning photography, especially night-time photography. I accept the challenge! I'm already looking forward to next year's Milky Way season so I can try this shot a few more times.

Description: 2014-04-07 - This shot was taken during my last visit to the Trader's Sky Bar. Missing out on the awesome sunset the previous day and also the burning sunrise that day made me determined to go out for a sunset session with two other friends. Though it was raining approximately an hour before sunset, Alhamdulillah the sky clears just enough to let the golden ray of the sun to shine gloriously that afternoon. The image is part of a sequence of images taken for a Day to Night Timelapse over Kuala Lumpur City.
