Peregrine Falcon - Falco Peregrinus

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey (raptor) in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. As is typical of bird-eating raptors, peregrine falcons are sexually dimorphic, with females being considerably larger than males. The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV programme, the highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).

The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species. In fact, the only land-based bird species found over a larger geographic area is not always naturally occurring, but one widely introduced by humans, the rock pigeon, which in turn now supports many peregrine populations as a prey species. The peregrine is a highly successful example of urban wildlife in much of its range, taking advantage of tall buildings as nest sites and an abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks. Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon," referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations. Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; disagreement exists over whether the distinctive Barbary falcon is represented by two subspecies of Falco peregrinus, or is a separate species, F. pelegrinoides. The two species' divergence is relatively recent, during the time of the last ice age, therefore the genetic differential between them (and also the difference in their appearance) is relatively tiny. They are only about 0.6–0.8% genetically differentiated.

While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures. The peregrine falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of the widespread use of certain pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.

The peregrine falcon is a well respected falconry bird due to its strong hunting ability, high trainability, versatility, and – in recent years – availability via captive breeding. It is effective on most game bird species, from small to large.

Glossy Ibis- Plegadis Falcinellus

Flocks of Glossy Ibis forage quite close together, advancing slowly as they probe a muddy area. This activity often attracts Snowy Egrets and other species of waders, which capture minnows and other prey moving away from the feeding ibis flocks.

Glossy Ibises nest in colonies, often among other species of ibis, heron, egret, or spoonbill. Colonial nesters have the advantage of many extra sets of eyes looking out for predators. Colonies might also be places where highly gregarious species like ibises can share information about the most productive foraging areas.

Glossy Ibis is a cosmopolitan species, also found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In recent decades, its population in Spain has been increasing rapidly, probably helped by increased rice cultivation there. Glossy Ibises banded in Spain have turned up as far away as Barbados, having crossed the Atlantic—a remarkable feat but one that several species of heron and egret have managed as well.

The oldest recorded Glossy Ibis was at least 21 years old and lived in Virginia between 1971 and 1992.

Everglades Snail Kites are a highly endangered bird in Florida! They are now referred to as Snail Kites and get their name for the fact that they feed almost exclusively on Apple Snails! They are a victim of poor water management, including water quality, high water levels, extremely low water levels. The water that is of extremely poor quality is because of recycling of farm water!

We were luck enough to see these Snail Kites mating on one of our trips to STA 5 in the wonderful early morning light!! As always thanks for looking and we will see you on Thursday!!

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a highly agile aircraft, designed to be a supremely effective dogfighter in combat. Later production aircraft have been increasingly better equipped to undertake air-to-surface strike missions and to be compatible with an increasing number of different armaments and equipment, including Storm Shadow and Brimstone missiles. The Typhoon had its combat debut during the 2011 military intervention in Libya with the UK's Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Italian Air Force, performing aerial reconnaissance and ground-strike missions.

This Typhoon was coming into land at RAF Coningsby and the name of the image 'Three Greens' comes from the 3 green light indications that tell the pilot the landing gear is down and locked.

They have a highly audible song for such a small bird. It took several minutes before I could locate him as he sang a few phrases from one place, and then started again in another location. Luckily for me, he flew down to an open perch very close where he sang and raised his crown.

It was a bright overcast backlight situation. I was close enough to get detail though, and I really like the way those red crown feathers were lighted from behind.

If you have never heard its song, Check the link below.

Have a nice day! :)

You can see it and feel it, all around in the Black Country Living Museum’s, in which I found when I visited the most highly popular 1940s this weekend.

And there it was when I saw these to two sweet young lovers that, we're looking into their eyes and falling in love and whispering, I love you, please don't leave me!

Because love is all around you here, my sweet darling!

The Cathedral of Palermo is one of the most characteristic monuments of the city: visiting it is like leafing through a history book of Sicily.

It is the main place of worship in the city of Palermo and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its highly original mix of styles, with elements of Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Catalan and Gothic art, is a direct consequence of the presence of multiple populations that, over the centuries, have alternated on Sicilian soil.

The style of the twelfth century prevails over all, the Norman one, although the appearance of the church as we see it today is due to modifications and additions from the eighteenth century.

A highly suggestive experience is the visit of the roofs of the Cathedral, thanks to which it is possible to discover the artistic and architectural elements of the external walls of the monument and admire Palermo from above.

One of the prettiest mountain drives awaits you if you travel the SR479 to Sulmona, panoramic scenes and small untouristed villages wait patiently to be discovered by those willing to brave the roads to see them, depicted here is one my favorites along the way Scanno. Scanno is known as the village of photographers with the likes of Hilde Lotz-Bauer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Mario Giacomelli, Renzo Tortelli, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Ferdinando Scianna, Mario Cresci all having taken famous shots here. While my shots may not be famous I famously enjoyed taking them and would highly recommend a stop here as well as in neighboring Villalago if you still have any storage space after Scanno.

I took this on Oct 11, 2012 with my D70s and Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens at 72mm, 1/320s, f5.6 ISO 200 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,Topaz, and DXO Nik

I highly recommend visiting this lighthouse in Provincetown, Cape Cod. You have to walk about 1 mile across a rocky causeway and then another mile through the dunes. It doesn't sound too strenuous, but on this day the temperature was 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit. If I didn't bring 1.5l water, I don't think I would have made it back.

Sensitive people suffer more, but they love more and dream more.

The highly decorated ceiling of Tilly Kori Madrasah, Registan, Samarkand in Uzbekistan.

The Tilya-Kori Madrasah is the last of the Registan's major buildings, completed a generation later than the Sher-Dor Madrasa of 1619-36, and a full 230 years after the Ulugh Beg madrasa. Its name means 'Gold Work' in reference to the kundal style painting in its prayer hall, which is decorated throughout with gilded relief.

I started with an old photo of mine from spring of 2017 and cropped it to make it square. Then used a geometric diamond overlay, opting for a blue background and allowing for a 15% bleed through. At that point enclosed in a fine lime green border. Then decorated with Adobe photoshop express patterns sticker PA16.

Highly intelligent and social birds, a species of true parrot, AKA Quaker Parrot, Monk Parakeets were introduced into the North America. Feral populations are common in Florida and Mexico, less so in Texas. Photographed on the verge of the Texas City Dike on a cold (43F/6C) morning, not the weather usually associated with parrots!

This highly social and intelligent species is well adapted to a semi-aquatic life-style. Male and female California sea lions differ significantly in appearance. Males are substantially bigger than females and have an enlarged sagittal crest, which is usually topped with white fur.

These highly maneuverable raptors make frequent hard turns while scanning for prey. This is a relatively easy adjustment, but you can see how the right wing and tail are tilted together to catch the wind and push it to the left.

A beautiful barbet endemic to the Malabar region of India. This is a vast global biodiversity hotspot from the tip of South India and spans most of the western coast.

The barbet is spectacularly rich in colors and absolutely amazing to look at. These are endemic to the Malabar region. They are small birds, maybe about 11-13 cms and just like Coppersmith Barbets - another common barbet found much of India.

Shot this picture in a forest camp situated right in the middle of a very active area. This tree was right above our room and the nest is exactly on the underside of the branch below the birds tail (a small inverted hollow). The birds have nested almost a month in advance as per the highly experienced bird guide in that place. The chicks are out and the bird was actively getting food every 30 mins. Just like other birds, it would check the surroundings for prey before it gets into the nest.

This was shot around noon when the bird was most active, so the light was a bit harsh.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

I felt sure that a low down, max DOF shot was the way to go with this, but this simple composition seemed to work best!

This is my slightly dusty electric guitar which is always a great way to unwind.

Hobby

A highly distinctive medium-sized raptor. Black overall with a thick white breast band and rusty-edged white stripes on the belly. Slender crest may be held vertically or at an angle when the bird is perched, but tends to be hidden during flight. If seen flying from above, note the “checkerboard” patterning on upperwings. Favors foothill and lowland forests when breeding, but can be found in more open habitats on passage and in wintering grounds. Quite social outside of the breeding season, often soaring in large flocks and roosting communally. Gives a squeaky, echoing whistle, often while in flight. (eBird)

---------------

As we were walking through the park, we caught sight of this lovely raptor. We were able to watch it for a while before it flew to another tree. An unusual find in Singapore as it showed as rare in the eBird checklist. We enjoyed seeing such a distinctive raptor. I discovered later that it had been overwintering in this city park, much to the joy of the local birders.

A fine French restaurant in the Greenwich Village area of Manhanttan, New York City. I highly recommend dining here when in Greenwich Village.

The Diamond Firetail Finch is a highly social bird and enjoys living in pairs or small groups. They are known for their cheerful chirping and are active and playful birds that love to explore their environment. They are also intelligent birds and when kept as pets can be trained to perform simple tricks.

Species: Carduelis carduelis.

The goldfinch is a highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting bird tables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain. Info: RSPB.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

Please help me identify the two birds in picture is it common redshank, marsh sandpiper, green sandpiper, wood sandpiper as all these are quite similar. Any help will be highly appreciated. Shot on 26 September 2020 in Kharar, Punjab, India.

Highly recommending "It's What I Do" by war photographer Lynsey Addario. Truly one of the most riveting memoirs I've ever read.

Thank you all for taking the time to look at, fav or comment on my images it's greatly appreciated. Stay safe and be lucky.

The wide angle lens is probably the most often used, but also misused, lens in landscape photography. It is a powerful lens, as long as it is used with forethought and for the right scenes. In my article I share with you useful tips for composing powerful wide angle images and I hope it encourages you to go out there and capture the beauty! Please feel free to read the article at this link. I hope you enjoy!

The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird is a medium-sized hummingbird. It has a distinctly rufous-colored tail, from which its named is derived, and a bright pink bill. Like other hummingbirds, it feeds on nectar and small insects. It can be highly territorial over feeding areas.

The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird is perhaps the most common species of hummingbird at forest edge and in gardens and cultivated areas from southern Mexico south to northwestern South America.

Little Owls (Athene noctua) are a highly sedentary species in the UK. They are particularly territorial in the breeding season and consequently very vocal, with a wide variety of vocalisations. Typical calls include a plaintive ‘kew’ ‘kew’ and a loud ‘wherrow’, repeated at regular intervals:

Little Owls establish their territory in the late winter and early spring, when males can be particularly noisy. Territory size varies throughout the year but is at its greatest prior to the breeding season when individuals may cover nearly 40Ha in the UK. This reduces to as little as 2Ha, as pairs provision young.

Diet consists primarily of crickets, grasshoppers and other invertebrates such as beetles and earthworms, as well as small mammals. Small birds are also taken during the breeding season.

Little Owls are most active at dawn and dusk, and after dark when most hunting occurs. However, they can frequently be seen during the middle of the day, basking in the sun on an exposed perch such as a telegraph pole, dead tree or isolated building. Rather than hunting on the wing, Little Owls usually hunt from a perch, typically a fence post. When prey is spotted they sometimes ‘bob up and down’ a few times before a typically short, low, undulating flight to the ground where they sometimes pursue prey on foot. Whilst perched on a post they blend into farmland environments extremely well and are easily overlooked (Courtesy Barn Owl Trust).
