Mountain Communities Highest Award Celebration 2018

Richland Balsam Overlook - Highest Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway Motorway - Elevation 6,053 ft. above sea level.

This is one of my favorite overlooks. Every season of the year is a fascinating one and none more so than late summer/early fall. The Monarch Butterflies regularly frequent this overlook along with Caney Fork Overlook. It blooms with SOMETHING from early spring through frost. At the moment it is showing a TON of Green-Headed Coneflower and the Joe Pie Weed has come out in profusion this last week. I was delighted to see the New England Aster beginning to open because that seems to be what the Monarch REALLY love as they migrate south to Mexico for the winter.

We were extremely surprised to find Monarchs today . . . at least four of them (probably more but I saw four together at the same time) because it's early. Don't know what that portends for the future, but they were a delight to behold!!!

In early December 2010, the Panama Canal closed for only the third time in its 96-year history. Two artificial lakes linked to the canal, Gatún and Alajuela, reached their highest-recorded water levels, prompting authorities to close the canal for 17 hours. The canal reopened on December 9.

Lago Alajuela serves as a reservoir for the Panama Canal, which lies to the lake’s southwest. On December 17, 2010, several days after the canal’s temporary closure, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image of Lago Alajuela. This image has been rotated so north is to the right. The canal lies off the top left corner of the image.

Torrential rains can erode soils, delivering heavy sediment loads to streams, rivers, and lakes. Ranging in color from dull green to tan, Lago Alajuela appears choked with sediment, contrasting sharply with the surrounding green forest.

Panama is accustomed to heavy precipitation. The rainy season lasts from May to January. The Panama Canal actually depends on huge quantities of water—each trip through the canal requires some 52 million gallons. Still, heavy rains in early December 2010 overwhelmed the region. The same rains that raised Lago Alajuela’s water level and filled it with sediment also forced thousands of residents to evacuate, washed out roads, and caused deadly landslides.

Ever wonder what the highest-grossing movies of all time are? You may be surprised to know the box office collection of these movies. Here, we will show the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. The list of these movies includes some delightful movies and some that we can only shake our heads at.

1) Avatar (2009)

Avatar is the highest-grossing movie ever made. It has a box office collection of $2.85 billion. James Cameron directed this movie, and it is a perfect masterpiece to watch. Avatar is modern mythmaking at its most foundational. This movie can give audiences a transformative experience, and every scene of this film bears the Herculean effort of truly genius worldbuilding. This movie has perfect storytelling and a great approach to exploring a different world.

2) Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Avengers: Endgame has a box office collection of $2.80 billion. Joe Russo and Anthony Russo directed this movie. The company has been steering stories and viewers for the previous 11 years and 21 films. However, there are many three-hour-plus movies and around 20+ entry movie franchises, but nothing comes close to Disney and Marvel Studios. This movie has such a great cast that people worldwide love it. All the characters are unforgettable, and every character of this movie has a different fanbase globally. We have seen 21 different movies in the previous 11 years from this franchise, and every movie is excellent, but Avengers: Endgame made a new record.
