Project Description:
On BBC News, March 28, 2007, there was a great article on a breakthrough study published in the journal Nature, that started with: "The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago had little effect on the evolution of mammals".
One theory had suggested the rise of the mammals was directly linked to the disappearance of the dinosaurs. The evidence challenging the connection comes from the most complete family tree compiled for mammals. It shows how different groups, such as primates and rodents, are related and when they diverged. An international team compiled the mammal "supertree" from existing fossil data and from genetic analyses.
As Kate Jones, a co-author of the project explained: "The supertree is a new way of showing all the mammal species on the planet, starting with a common ancestor. Species relationships can be inferred from morphological characteristics and genetic sequences". And she continues by saying: "If we had done this from scratch, we would have had to get molecular and morphological data for 4,000 different species. (...) What we did instead was use already published information from hundreds of researchers around the world. We used a new technique called supertree construction which allows us to get all the information that's out there, re-code it and re-analyse it as if it's all part of one dataset."
Your phone number in rwanda defines your social status (including who will answer your calls!) This number begins with 08 and is therefore 'old school', owned by people who've had a mobile for a while or who hold important positions. New numbers beginning with 03 (like ours) belong to 'peasants', i.e. those who have only just got a mobile. Generally people won't answer a call from an 03 number if they don't know it! The other communication trend here is 'beeping', where you just call someone and hang up so they know you've called. Similar to a facebook 'poke', it doesn't really mean more than 'hi', but you're expected to 'beep' back or return the call.

EMU STUDENT WHEAT PASTING IN DETROIT
Project_01 Hierarchy and Expression is a project that aims to challenge the students initial type and compositional skills learned through intro classes. Not only was the goal to build upon current visual compositional skills, but also to achieve a growth in research and concept.
We set out by researching socio-economical issues pertaining to the Detroit Metro area. Some of the students ideas were grounded in Detroit’s recent issue of filing for bankruptcy. Others include linked issues such as the DIA’s current predicament of possibly being forced to sell some of their collections.
The project not only goes through the fundamentals of visually and strategically composing a poster, but also includes some very real and heated issues. Taking the project one step further we created a scenario outside of the classroom in order to use cheap materials (wheat paste, bond paper prints, screen print color overlays.) to appropriately reflect the interest in issues steeped in financial crisis. In collaboration with Lincoln Street Art Park the students pasted their posters in a sanctioned area, thus learning a unique and valuable experience of embracing the opportunities that Detroit and its population have to offer, regardless of its current crisis.

I had the opportunity to go back to the zoo again today. Wish i could go every day at the moment. With a new baby elephant calf, things change so rapidly.
It's fascinating to see how Luk Chai is coping now that he is no longer the centre of the universe ... or at least not for Porntip. Porntip is very protective of her new calf. Woe betide Luk Chai if Porntip feels he is a risk to her new calf. Luk Chai seems to be able to handle it OK. He keeps coming back for more!
This was the most serious encounter i saw between Porntip and Luk Chai. If he hadn't been lured back over to the mud wallow, i think he was going to head straight back to Porntip and the calf only moments after he's been chastised by Porntip.
After the encounter, Luk Chai's mum (Thong Dee) comes over to check up on Luk Chai.
This picture shows my roommate’s cat, Ollie, in my room standing on my
homework. When I took this picture I was sitting on the floor in the middle
of studying when he appears out of nowhere and decides to stand on my
homework. This is interesting because he is inconveniencing me but doesn’t
care. Of course, Ollie is of a different species and cannot speak any
language us humans do. Cats, like humans, have a hierarchy. For that reason
I am sure he must think he is of utmost importance and higher social
status. By standing on my homework he has placed himself above me. Not only
that, but my roommate is the main “owner” of the apartment, and he must
sense that within the home, I live under her authority--by extension, his
own.
