Audiences experienced The John Rylands Library as never seen before in a promenade performance that explored love and hierarchies, past and present. Using the traditional 16th century Italian comedy form of Commedia Dell’Arte, the Library was brought vividly to life by Contact Young Actors Company, directed by Dende Collective's Andre Pink.

I had previously seen a modern copy of this kind of board game. When I studied Japanese in high school, my teacher had a copy of the game, which portrayed the travels of the players as taking place along the Tokkaido Road. As I was originally introduced to the game as an intra-Japan travelogue, I was surprised to see that other editions with different settings existed.

The board game that we examined in the Clements Library and also talked about in lecture takes the players around the world and provides commentary on each of the different spaces. This describes the different locales and ways of life, as well as gives the players a small caricature of what the region looks like. As the game focuses on international travel, can one assume that purpose of the game is to teach the players about different countries and peoples? Why would this be important or entertaining for Japanese players?

When I looked at the different descriptions for each of the nations the player visits in the game, the parts that interested me the most were the strange comments made about other nations. For example, one space represents a land where people are kidnapped and exchanged for money. Another land that players visit has a giant bird that can cover the whole land with its wings. To the modern player, this description of Denmark seems closer to something from the Lord of the Rings, instead of a board game meant to teach facts.

Perhaps one of the results of the game was to shape the worldview of its players. When we looked at one map in the map library, there were little frames around the outside that had different drawings of people from various regions in traditional clothing. It seemed as though through “collecting” these stereotyped peoples, the cartographers created a sense of hierarchy and categorization for the outside world. This ladder also came to be a part of Orientalism. Maybe another use for this game was to create a system like that just described.

Palais Augarten - "a place of recreation" for Archduke Otto

Hierarchies, pecking orders, family traditions also determined the homes of family members. Yet why was Archduke Otto in the Augarten comfortabler living than the heir to the throne?

The site on which there is the Palais Augarten until today, served the Habsburgs yet at the beginning of the 17th Century as a hunting ground. Joseph II bought the site together with the palace and had thereon expanded this. In the same year, in 1775, he made his nickname of "people's emperor" all honor and made the park accessible to the population. "All people dedicated Erlustigungs (enjoyment) site of their cherisher," the Regent let, as there is still read today, write for the occasion on the front gate of the Augarten.

From 1860 to 1863, the brother of Franz Joseph Karl Ludwig lived in the Augarten Palace. 1867, High Steward Konstantin Prince Hohenlohe moved to the Augarten. Under him, and especially thanks to his wife, the estate has developed into a cultural center frequented by famous people such as Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt and Hans Markart. End of the 19th Century Franz Joseph assigned his nephew Archduke Otto the palace together with his own royal household, royal kitchen and Lipizzaners as to residence. Otto lived so comfortabler than his older brother Franz Ferdinand, who was, after the death of Crown Prince Rudolf in 1889 the heir to the throne, after all. But him was only assigned the Palais Modena in Vienna Herrengasse. Why?

Franz Ferdinand suffered from tuberculosis, so it was a long time uncertain whether he would actually be able to succeed to the throne. Franz Joseph, his potential successor had a distant relationship, only too happy to involve his favorite nephew Otto increasingly in the business of government in order to relieve the sick brother. It was obvious that Francis Joseph had the charming Otto preferred as successor. But Franz Ferdinand recovered from his illness. The old order of succession was thus already restored, when in 1899 the Palais Augarten has been extensively renovated and expanded for Otto. There he devoted himself to his favorite hobbies, to painting and photography, before he died at the age of 41. His son, Archduke Carl Franz Joseph was as Charles I the last Emperor of Austria.

Where once Archduke Otto had lived settled in 1923 the famous Augarten porcelain manufactory. In addition, live, learn and play music since 1948, the Vienna Boys Choir here. A place of amusement, as it Joseph II had wished for himself and to which it also made Otto with his cheerful way of life, the Augarten is today.

(Hierarchy of Needs)

The functionality of postage stamp is to indicate prepayment of fees for public mail. The reliability is to serve the full price written on each stamps. (This does not work with the new American "FOREVER" stamps; users encounter trouble using FOREVER stamps for their international mais. FOREVER stamps can pay 45 cents per each stamps only for domestic mails.) The usability of stamps increase when they are easy to tear along with dotted lines and easy to stick on envelopes. Recent stamps are more useful because they can be sticked on envelopes like stickers; people do not have to lick the back side of the stamps anymore. Some stamps have irregular shapes that does not fit very well with the shape of envelopes. Square or rectangular stamps in small size are the best fit. Stamps from different countries have their own creative design, use their social icons (such as cats in Japan,) proudly show-off their best tourist spots, commemorate their celebrities of the year, or promote national campaigns (like water saving.) The aesthetic of design and its influences add to the stamp's proficiency. A Christmas Seal of constellation, issued in 1999, reached the creativity level of needs. The white parts are painted with luminous paint which glows like stars in dark. All the money raised by Christmas Seals are used for the prevention and cure of tuberculosis disease, even adding more meaning to the product. However, the product's basic needs are not met; people cannot use these seals to pay the mailling fees.
