The Giant Freshwater Crayfish (lobster) is the largest freshwater invertebrate in the world and is unique to Tasmania. It is listed as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and over fishing. They are long-lived (around 40 years in an ideal world), can grow over 80 centimetres (nearly 32 inches) in length and weigh up to 5 kilograms (11 lbs), although such large specimens are now very rarely found.
