In the Taunus Mountains near Bad Soden, Germany, a classic springtime view. This is apple-growing country, and apple wine is a favorite local drink (called Apfelwein in German, or Äppelwoi in the local Hessian dialect). An archives shot taken with my very first DSLR camera. [PICT4111_lr_2000]

On the left bank of the Weser, above Bad Karlshafen, are the Hessian Cliffs. You will find such significant places when you hike through the forest there as the Peter-Peter-Hütte in the Dreiländereck, the Hugenottenturm from 1913 or the Ludwig-Stein, a memorial stone.

Some tiny 'Yellow Pear' tomatoes, no more than 1 cm wide and a little hessian bag. I think it worked. For Macro Mondays, this week's theme is: contained. Happy Macro Mondays/ HMM

Poor camel having to listen to that noise all day. I use it on the front door handle, that's bad enough.

The Hessians love their apple trees, and so do I. From this tree I was able to enjoy a few delicious apples in the fall.

Marköbel, Hesse/Germany

This week, on a walk in the forest, I met an animal that doesn't really belong here. It was eating acorns and didn't care about me

In Germany—where the raccoon is called the Waschbär (literally, "wash-bear" or "washing bear") due to its habit of "dousing" food in water—two pairs of pet raccoons were released into the German countryside at the Edersee reservoir in the north of Hesse in April 1934 by a forester upon request of their owner, a poultry farmer. He released them two weeks before receiving permission from the Prussian hunting office to "enrich the fauna." Several prior attempts to introduce raccoons in Germany were not successful. A second population was established in eastern Germany in 1945 when 25 raccoons escaped from a fur farm at Wolfshagen (today district of Altlandsberg), east of Berlin, after an air strike. The two populations are parasitologically distinguishable: 70% of the raccoons of the Hessian population are infected with the roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis, but none of the Brandenburgian population has the parasite. The estimated number of raccoons was 285 animals in the Hessian region in 1956, over 20,000 animals in the Hessian region in 1970 and between 200,000 and 400,000 animals in the whole of Germany in 2008. By 2012 it was estimated that Germany now had more than a million raccoons (Wikipedia)

posting for Crazy Tuesday: handmade for me

Once upon a time, as a stay-at-home mum to our two small children, evening classes in adult education were precious 'me-time': swimming, badminton, Spanish, flower arranging, copper/pewter work.

Family received pieces in pewter or copper as gifts; this pewter dragon, crafted for me and mounted on purple-dyed hessian, hangs still on our wall at home.

The Hessian Bergstrasse (mountain street) is one of the warmest areas in Germany. We seldom have wintry (white) conditions for more than three days per year. So if you want to photograph birds in "winter" in our area, you have to stick to the rare days when the conditions are right. This time I was lucky, The "winter" fell on a weekend and I had the opportunity to go for a walk in the snow. On this occasion I was able to photograph this male blackbird on a branch with hoarfrost.

To view this picture with the best resolution in full screen press the "l" (small L) and F11 keys. When enlarging the pic by just mouse clicking you lose quality. Enjoy!

Former cloister Haydau lies in the district Alt-Morschen of the municipality Morschen in the Schwalm Eder Kreis in Hesse. It is the cloister best of all preserved in his architectural continuance of the Cisterciansinnen in Hesse.

In 1232 landgrave Konrad von Thüringen and his field captain Friedrich von Treffurt to Spangenberg attacked the Mainz broad city of Fritzlar. They pillage and threaten to burn the town, they burnt down and looted the conventual church Saint Peter. Friedrich's family to the Fritzlarer provost Gumbert offered to the penalty obliged her endowment around the moor, so Haydau. On the 23rd of January, 1235 provost Gumbert confirmed this handing over to the Cisterciansinnen.

In the middle of the 14th century cloister of Haydau had developed not only to a spiritual-cultural, but also an economic centre in which the landgraves of Hessian had pledged towns and villages.

He loves playing ball at the dog park but also loves playing in the water there. He would spend at least half the time in the water playing yet when we get home and he needs a bath it's like lifting a hessian bag of potatoes, nothing but dead weight. He hates the bath, go figure.

###

Due to a construction-related total closure of the Main-Weser-Bahn for the extension of the S-Bahn line S6 in the first two weeks of the Hessian Easter holidays 2023, additional trains were ordered by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund as RE 16 between Friedberg (Hess) and Frankfurt (Main) to cover the traffic flows on Mondays to Fridays. These trains, consisting of class 245 locomotives with double-decker coaches, did not take the route via Hanau, but via the single-track line Friedberg (Hess) - Rosbach v d Höhe - Friedrichsdorf (Ts) and then via the "Homburger Bahn" to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf. Here we see 245 018 with RE 99041 Friedberg (Hess) - Frankfurt (Main) Hbf in Bad Homburg station, which it passes through without stopping. The impressive building of the Kaiserbahnhof (Homburg vor der Höhe was a popular summer residence of Kaiser Wilhelm II) was put into service on 26 October 1907 and forms a commendable backdrop for this train, which is not a common sight there.

For the Macro Monday challenge "String" (October 19th 2020)

I think of it as 'real' string. It is coarse, has real texture, frays at the ends, and is so much more photogenic than modern string! Looking it up online it is described variously as "Rustic Twine String" or "Hessian jute twine". I imagine it is the kind that the song refers to here: "brown paper packages tied up with strings" ;o)

This piece measures just under 2"

The weekly theme is have fun with colour

Macro Monday's theme - Stripes

I love to decorate things so when I was stuck for an idea today, I ventured into my craft room to see what I could come up with. I found the striped ribbon, wrapped it around a jar, tied a bit of string round and filled the jar with buttons. HMM
