After WW2 , to help solve the unemployment problem of the returned soldiers and the oncoming Depression, the Government offered "Soldier Settlements'. Small acreages of land were given out and a sum of money to build a house and get a farm started. Sadly, the land was too poor to grow good crops on such small allotments, and the scheme was a failure, Driving past I took this shot of one of the houses with the communal machinery etc, piled around it - a field of broken dreams!

I was at Helper, UT when the dispatcher sent this helper set west to help a heavy eastbound. I being a grande fan followed eventually ending up in Provo. Eventually the heavy eastbound appeared and we were soon climbing Soldier Summit.

Reading & Northern SD50s 5018 & 5019 assist with the R&N's Iron Horse Ramble at Jim Thorpe PA on August 13, 2022. Here the steam special is being turned for the return trip to Reading. The SD50 pair followed the train up in the morning, then coupled to the rear at Jim Thorpe and pulled the train up to clear the signal here and is now being towed by the steam locomotives on the head end around the west leg of the wye. The SD50 pair will then pull the train into the station for the return trip.

Meet Mom's Helper. The mom of the twins has picked up a helper; this most likely young female, has been helping out with the twins lately. When the four of them are around, the mom and twins don't stick around but this gal let's you get close. Not only that, she goes about her business of eating and doesn't pay too much attention. I think she may have been born on our property and is one of Mom's offspring but I'm not really sure.
I photographed this bird on the wildlife driving loop at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Commerce City, Colorado, on May 24, 2017. Although I suspect it's a western kingbird, which is fairly common in our area, I had some doubt because its head and chest are so much darker than other western kingbirds. I'm wondering if it could be a Cassin's kingbird, although they are not common for this part of Colorado.
A common pair on the East and West Slope made their way to Harrisburg after rescuing Amtrak train 42 in Pittsburgh. Apparently the P42 locomotive couldn't get the train out of the Steel City that morning, and a call went out to NS for help getting the passenger train to Harrisburg. These two SD40E's did the job, pulling the train here off the Pittsburgh Line and under the wires onto Amtrak rails. An Amtrak ACS-64 was tacked onto the front once the helpers were removed and the train continued to Philadelphia several hours off their normal schedule.
Jasper helped his mom (my wife, Jean) celebrate her birthday this weekend. He was super excited when it was time for her to open gifts, but a little confused by why anyone would want what was in the packages. Humans!
A set of MRL helpers shove grain loads out of Livingston, MT where some searchlights remain. March 2022.
If you are going to buy a big turkey this year - take a friend to help carry it.
Now how big do I need ?
Turkey size for 3-4 people: A 1.5-1.75kg / 3-4lb bird
Turkey size for 5-6 people: A 2-3kg / 5-6lb bird
Turkey size for 7-9 people: A 3-3.5kg / 7-8lb bird
Turkey size for 10-12 people: A 4-4.5kg / 9-10lb bird
Turkey size for 13-15 people: A 4.5-5kg / 10-11lb bird
Turkey size for 16-18 people: A 5.5-6.5kg / 12-14lb bird
Turkey size for 20-24 people: A 6.75-7.75kg / 15-17lb
Also think about how big is your oven (cutting a turkey in half to get it in the oven can ruin your Christmas morning).
turkey sizes by Kg
4kg – 22cm (w) x 30cm (L) x 15cm (h)
7.5kg - 26cm (w) x 33cm (L) x 17cm (h) , 7.4kg - 27cm (w) x 35cm (L) x 19 cm (h)
10kg - 32cm (w) x 39cm (L) x 19cm (h) , 10kg – 31cm (w) x 38cm (L) x 20cm (h)
11kg – 32cm (w) x 42cm (L) x 20cm (h)
12.5kg - 30cm (w) x 41cm (L) x 20cm (h)
13kg - 30cm (w) x 43cm (L) x 20cm (h), 13kg – 33cm (w) x 39cm (L) x 20cm (h)
15kg - 34cm (w) x 44cm (L) x 20cm (h)
Does anybody have experience colouring eggs with natural ingredients such as parsley, red beets etc? Mine all remain white for some strange reason.

Back Story ........................................
Left real early for The Dog Palace.
Lots of maintenance to do before my departure.
Many old plastic water pipes around The Dog Palace
have developed pinhole leaks now that they're used
on a regular basis.Broke the compound down into 6
sections. Numbered each grid and made note of any
leaks and what material was needed for repairs.
Now here's a little secret, for months I've been picking up
any discarded plastic pipe no matter what size, diameter or
length. So there's a good stash laid out in an orderly fashion in the bingo room. Glues cheap as is hacksaw blades.
Fed Mama then started right in on the water pipe project ......
Half the grids had been addressed, all leaks were repaired
in the first 3 grids and now time for a brake .......
Gathered up dog food bags an along with Mama crossed The Cement Walking Bridge. Mama waits here while I continue on for about 80 meters into The Leroy Crews Turf.
Tuff Guy jumps up on the rock wall chasing the monkeys away.
His food bag is opened and spread out, Tuff Guy's Happy .... ;-)
Next it's Honeys turn as she eagerly rubs my leg like a cat.
OK, now for this photo ................................
See the bag in my little helpers hand ? Well when the feeding started it was full to the top. I was zipping around spreading small piles of food while each dog consumed at the same time wording off aggressive monkeys !
Once the food bag was at a manageable size I tossed it to her and started shooting photos. Little Helper is Very Happy too ..;-)
Now it's time to head back to the cement walking bridge where Mama had been joined by Rocky, Tinker Bell, Little Stubby, and a heard of puppies from the nuns place.
Talk about chaos, imagine trying to walk while everybody wants to walk on the tops of your feet at the same time .
Well I finally just sat down on the ground and took all their abuse, it was frightening being on the bottom of a dog pile
with a dozen wet tongues in motion ! ..;- )~~~~~~
Finally escaped with Mama and went back to finish up the other 3 grids, which I did finish completely.
With the maintenance finish I said my goodbyes, mounted the new bike and continued on towards the Cambodian border.
No# 1 wife new I was on the way. Had lunch then semi helped her.
Dark had already arrived, not a good time to be on the road, especially on a small motor scooter. But there was 3 more dogs at home that were wondering about their dinner.
It was 9:30PM when I pulled into our compound. Fed the dogs then fed myself........ It's after 11PM right now .......
Won't see No# 1 for awhile, same with all the temple dogs.
Sister-in-law will live here in my absence ..
Catch ya all on the rebound ... ;-)
Thank You.

So on a Macro Mondays posting recently someone mentioned that they didn’t have a ruler and hoped their picture was within the 3” parameters. And I got to thinking about teaching my elementary kids about measuring —- you always have a ruler with you….
For most people the distance between the first and second knuckle on your forefinger (pointer) is about an inch - even on adults. Go ahead try it… For those of you using metric measurements it’s about 2.4cms…..
So now you can measure macro items with more confidence!…… (By the way, another equivalency - the distance between your bent wrist and your crooked elbow is about the size of your foot. There are others.)
And if you’ve stuck with me for this science/math lesson— wish me a happy birthday 🎂- yes, it really and truly is my birthday!!
