Please follow this link ... or this one.if you have any interest in donating to one of the charities that are/will be providing relief to Haiti.

I can only imagine the impact that this level of destruction will have on an already impoverished nation. The people of Haiti had nothing to begin with and now... somehow... it's gotten worse. I don't think it's possible for there to be too much help right now, it's just a matter of getting the money, the aid... in the right hands. I encourage you to look into any organization and see how they direct their funds/donations received. I can only hope that a new level of understanding of Haiti and it's needs, that were already so desperate, will come from this disaster.

UPDATE: A very thoughtful post by Chris Sacca on ways you can help... I think number 6 is just as important as making a donation right now.

Students’ Fine Art Work Helped ONU Win a Metal at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition

President H.S. Lehr tirelessly worked to promote his school whenever and however possible. In 1893 as new buildings on campus were completed and major events like the Campbell-McKinley debate were held, another opportunity to advertise the university arose in the form of a letter from the United States commissioner of education. The request solicited a university exhibit for the upcoming World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

The exhibit was to be the work of students and not a museum display. A number of faculty members thought it unwise, if not hopeless, to compete with larger and more prestigious institutions. However, the trustees, a body which consisted of President Lehr and Professors John Park, Frederick Maglott and Warren Darst, disagreed.

The university at the time was organized into eleven independent departments: Literary, Commercial, Engineering, Military, Law, Musical, Telegraphic, Stenographic, Pharmaceutic, Elocutionary and Fine Art. Although some departments did not participate, it was still possible to secure a representative sampling of student work. The exhibit eventually consisted of student essays, geography maps, fine herbarium, blue prints, projection drawings, analytical figures and fine art paintings.

The department of fine art, lead by Prof. Albert Rogall, was committed to Lehr’s vision of creating an exhibit at the exposition. Prof. Rogall, who fought in the Civil War, came to Ada about 1882 to teach fine arts. In 1885, he was appointed an instructor of painting, drawing and architecture, and was highly successful.

About 350 students were enrolled in the fine art department in 1893, but only one student graduating, Elsie McDowell from Nankin, Ohio. According to the catalog, courses offered through the department included drawing (freehand, perspective, mechanical, bridge-building), painting (landscape, crayon, pastel), ornamental penmanship, and lettering-freehand. Tuition was $3 per term for drawing courses; $5 per term for mechanical and industrial drawing courses, and $10 per term for all other courses (crayon drawing, water color, oil painting, India ink and Poonah painting).

As the planning for the exhibit transpired, Prof. Rogall selected several student paintings for inclusion. As Lehr noted, “The teachers of English had their students write essays, those studying geography prepared maps, Prof. Rogall selected some fine paintings prepared by his art students...”

As the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago took place, the doubting Thomases could have saved themselves a good deal of worry. The exhibit was one of only four from Ohio colleges, and it was well received. The materials prepared by Mrs. Maglott and her students were of particular interest to the Awards Committee. Mrs. Maglott, teacher of higher mathematics, had her students prepare intricate figures in analytics worked out by silk threads and fine steel wires.

As a result of the tremendous effort of the faculty and students, the Awards Committee presented the university a ribbon and a bronze medal for the presentation.

Lehr, always quick to seize an opportunity, incorporated a picture of the ribbon into the cover of the university catalog for several years. The medal appeared on the university letterhead.

Another HelpPortrait we did here in Dallas. While some photographers were inside shooting, I came outside with a light and got some shots of the boys on the court. These young men really were polite and fun to be around. Sadly we had to stop because it was starting to rain. Check out HelpPortrait.com

I need help deciding on my background (outer) fabric!

The top photo is what I ordered to use, and realized that it wasn't the same color pink and I AM NOT USING IT because it doesn't match and would drive me crazy! I am using it for the backing.

The middle photo is a dark gray with dark dark gray/black polka dots.

The bottom photo is Kona Ash, a light gray.

Help me pick between the middle and bottom...I am evenly divided and don't know which to choose. I feel like the bottom Kona is the "safe bet" but the middle one is a good punch and more unexpected.

I don't have notes of where this was taken, but it appears to be the same day as some other shots in East Lothian in June 1982. Can anyone identify it?

Sign on the LaSalle Hotel, 302 South Main Street, Helper, Utah. This building dates from 1922, and the hotel was on the upper floors while the ground floor held various businesses throughout the years. The hotel mainly catered to railroad workers. Today the building stands vacant. It is part of the Helper Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

This was one of the best times I have ever had with my camera, taking pictures of families that probably have never had a portrait taken or could never afford one, and watching their reaction when you gave them a photo of them and their family. I remember seeing the video a couple of months ago on Help Portrait and new right then I couldn't pass this opportunity up to give back to the community to families that were less fortunate than myself. I am deffinetly looking forward to next year.

Thanks to everyone who helped put a smile on so many families in need worldwide!!

Also thanks J.R. for putting this together!!!!

Upon founding the Light Foundation, Matt dreamed about starting a camp where young men could learn lifelong skills that would help them be R.E.A.L (Responsible, Ethical, Accountable, Leaders). For its 10th consecutive year, the Light Foundation’s premier program, Camp Vohokase has done just that.

Each year, Matt chooses four incoming high school freshmen from an at-risk community and asks them to commit the next four years to our leadership program, which includes 10 days at Chenoweth Trails each summer. There are always 18 boys in camp, four from each grade level, with each group coming from a different part of the country. Those locations, all with a connect to the Light Foundation, include Greenville, Ohio, where Matt grew up; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, close to where Matt holds his signature fundraising event; New Orleans, Louisiana, where a like-minded charity had asked for help; West Lafayette, Indiana, where Matt attended Purdue; Gloucester, Worcester and New Bedford, Massachusetts, all close to where Matt played during his NFL years; Hammond, Indiana, where Matt’s wife Susie grew up and identified a need for support; and new this year, Washington D.C, where the treasurer of the board resides.

The young men are required to keep good academic standing, complete a yearly community service project back home, and check in with our head counselors on a frequent basis. Program Director Edgar Flores tracks the kids’ progress year-round. He also does quarterly visits in order to foster the ongoing relationship between the campers, their class, and the foundation. By interacting with them in their own space, we can learn more about their behaviors and how those connect with their personal situations. By entering their homes, we often have the chance to stand as a united front with their parents or guardians in ensuring they’re doing exactly what they need to do to succeed. These visits are critical in reassuring to the young men that we are committed to them and serve as a true support system and not just a summer camp counselor. Not to mention, we have a lot of fun! They bond over some good grub and connect about what’s going on in their lives at that moment. Past day trips during a visit have included: Dave & Buster’s, paint balling, laser tag, amusement parks, farms, and bowling. We do try and balance the fun with more educational opportunities like volunteer community service projects, visiting local museums, or making a college visit for some of our juniors and seniors.

In return of having a good academic standing, the campers spend ten days among nature enjoying all that our beautiful facility has to offer whether it be skeet shooting, woodworking, canoeing, archery, fishing, dirt biking, etc. Despite all the fun we have here, the young men are responsible for daily chores, site visits to area businesses, and the completion of a service project around Darke County. Each night of the stay is reserved for fireside chats. These chats are structured to help create a dialogue about the very real and difficult issues these young boys face back home.

For a lot of these kids, all they need is an opportunity. We use the outdoors as a real teaching tool and a way to get kids to open up. And with us, these kids aren’t given anything. We make them work for everything they achieve. But through that they understand and value hard work, they learn work ethic, and they become proud of what they do, and want to share their accomplishments. Our hope is that after four years, each young man graduates from the program ready to become leaders in their own communities, equipped with the necessary tools and a heart for service.

In the past 11 years, 30 at-risk young men have graduated from Vohokase Cultural Leadership Camp with the tools to tap into their greatest potential as people and community leaders.
