Hell Gate railway bridge, built between March 1912 and September 1916 links Astoria in Quens with Randall's Island in New York City, viewed here from Randall's Island. The bridge carries Amtrak trains on the Northeast Corridoor between New York and Boston and also carries freight. According to Wikipedia, at the time of its completion, this bridge was the world's longsest steel arch bridge, surpassed by the Bayonne Bridge in 1931 and again by Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932. Wikipedia says the Sydney Harbour Bridge's design was influenced by the Hell Gate Bridge and, judging from pictures, there is quite a similarity between the two. Hell Gate is aptly named, because of its strong currents and eddies. On one side of the channel are some rocks, near Randall's Island that could easily cause shipwreck and are exposed at certain states of the tide. A good, reliable engine should be run when trying to navigate Hell Gate on a sail boat.

This shows the landward side where the sea cave has collapsed revealing the passage.

The NorthStar Roller Girls opened their season last night at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Roller Derby is American created contact sport that made it’s debut in 1922. The leagues are 100% skater owned and feature a mix of athleticism and a satirical punk appearance. Thanks Pre Flash Gordon for the invitation as a guest photographer.

Hell is a group of short, black, limestone formations located on Grand Cayman. It is in West Bay.

The area is about the size of half a football field.

Visitors are not permitted to walk on the limestone formations but a couple of viewing platforms are provided.

We visited 'Hell' in April 2018.

There were small statues of devils scattered throughout the area.

A glass of Andechser Hell from Klosterbrauerei Andechs on draft at Andechser am Dom in Munich.

Andechser Hell is a 4.8% abv helles lager brewed with local Bavarian malts and Hallertau hops. It poured a clear, golden yellow color with a white head. The aroma sported a mild caramel sweetness and hints of floral hops. It had a light mouthfeel with a soft carbonation. The flavor had a mild fruity sweetness, with some good malt notes, not much else really. A bit simple, even for a helles, but with a nice malt profile.
