This is a photo taken while on the air tram down to the Hell's Gate area.

The hell cat design was the cumulative result of many different things. The body was something that has been on my mind for some time, and in many ways is the refined and distilled version of my very first guitar. It is actually closer to the sketch that inspired my first build than my first build ended up being.

I first sketched up the unique bridge shape this time last year. It was originally intended to be used for a fanned fret 8 string I was designing but the customer ended up backing out. I really liked the general shape though, so I changed for use on a mono scale six string.

The top is carved buckeye burl. The tailpiece, bridge, pickup covers, knobs, and truss rod cover (not in the photos) are made from claro walnut burl. the body has a soft maple core, with eastern black walnut wings. The neck is curly eastern black walnut. Headstock veneer is buckeye burl front and back. Peters logo is in copper, and the nut is buffalo horn. The fretboard is EIR with abalone set in copper. All the binding is curly maple.

It has a master volume, master tone, 3 way selector, and series/single/parallel switch for each pup. Pickups are GFS soapbar 180’s and tuners are grover locking.

Betty Heller-Hobbs, the wife of Jack Heller, the director of Upham Woods from 1970-1985. She was very heavily involved in Upham activities during his time here, and is a very dedicated Upham alum. She painted more than one painting and mural onsite.

Back in the twilight of the Texas Aggie Corps there was still a 'hell week'. This is when no matter how perfect you and your class performed, you were still wrong. No abuse, just mental. The purpose was to build team (Class) unity. You were actually taken down the path of becoming a team, without knowing it. Sophomores would make your life a living 'hell', Juniors and Seniors would be constantly disappointed. But there was always a couple of 'mentors' who would come around and give 'friendly' advise--that in order to make it through would require team work, and to come together to help each other. These short keys to generally smart people, was all it took to create the bonds.

In the end, we would 'kidnap' our Commanding Officer (in this case Johnny Wienbaum), take him out to the woods. And then release him so we could all have a good laugh--all good fun for everyone. We were now a team.

In many mythologies, there is said to be a big black beast in the bowels of the earth. In ancient Egypt, it is the god Anubis, in Nordic mythology, there is the monstrous wolf Fenris, and in Greek mythology, the gates to the underworld are guarded by the three headed dog Cerberus.

The wolf or dog is often thought to represent the unconscious, symbolic of the ‘lower senses’ of instinct as well as the lower world. The role of these beasts is often adversarial, however the clown’s relationship to them is generally more friendly. The depiction of the Fool in many tarot decks is a perfect example, as the fool is accompanied by a dog, sometimes playful, sometimes warning. One form of the trickster in Native American mythology is the dog-like Coyote, an embodiment of hunger, instinct and unconscious desires.

The PUMA HellRunner™ is over multi-terrain and varying underfoot conditions. There will be everything from running tracks and trails to water-filled areas and plenty of steep hills. Expect to get very wet! It will be nature at its toughest. The course will be marked but do not expect to see mile or kilometre markers….that’s for those softy road running types. All you need to know is that the course will be probably more than 10 and less than 12 miles in length.

In 1570 the Battle of Gelt Bridge took place in this area. Leonard Dacre and his forces were defeated by Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, cousin of Queen Elizabeth I.

Over 200 people were slaughtered during the battle and Hell Beck ran red with their blood.
