ESO's Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) has captured this unusual view of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), a planetary nebula located 700 light-years away. The coloured picture was created from images taken through Y, J and K infrared filters. While bringing to light a rich background of stars and galaxies, the telescope's infrared vision also reveals strands of cold nebular gas that are mostly obscured in visible images of the Helix.

The Helix planetary nebula, or Eye of God nebula (NGC 7293), located in the constellation Aquarius, is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, situated about 650 light-years away. This nebula is famous for its appearance resembling a giant eye and is often referred to as the "Eye of God" due to its shape.

This deep-sky target — the Helix Nebula — lies low on the southern horizon from my location, barely skimming above the light pollution pouring from the Malta Freeport. Despite the challenges, I’ve managed to bring out its delicate structure and radiant colours through patience, persistence, and a lot of post-processing love.

At ~700 light years away, this planetary nebula is the final breath of a dying star — shedding its layers into space, like a cosmic eye watching silently from the void.

There’s something humbling about capturing something that vast and ancient, through all the haze and chaos of our busy sky.
