Easter Sunday 2017 find: Purple maple seed. We called these helicopters growing up in Ohio, but others call them whirligigs - hours of fun.

During a drug bust operation, this police helicopter flew below and around the contrasting black, gold and yellow clouds near sunset.

Naval Station Mayport is one of three major Navy installations in the Jacksonville area. Mayport is home to a busy seaport as well as an air facility. The mission of NS Mayport is to sustain and enhance war-fighter readiness.Mayport's operational composition is unique, with a busy harbor capable of accommodating 34 ships and an 8,000-foot (2,400 m) runway capable of handling most any aircraft in the Department of Defense inventory.Naval Station Mayport is also home to the Navy's 4th Fleet, reactivated in 2008 after being deactivated in 1950.

Great place to photograph helicopters, they teach pilots how to fly there, so one taking off & landing all day

"M." is not happy. Sent by her family to a strange place, she has only been told that some sort of agreement needs to be reached. Apparently there is some shady man with considerable resources who is willing to lend enough money to keep the family business afloat. That is all well and good, though she is angry she does not know the details even though she thinks she is there for negotiation. And soon, her anger is going to spike, as in exchange for the loan this man wants a gift.. and the gift is M. herself.

Independence Day 2018

Just a shot of a helicopter just taken off from a garden over on the other side of the railway line - they do have big gardens over there . It always strikes me how helicopters dip or lean over to one side when taking off or landing .

Grab shot having just heard it start up and luckily the camera with the telephoto is kept handy for diving out to capture aircraft going over that are of interest . Trouble is when the Spitfire goes over it has gone by the time I get outside - it ofen passes over on it's way to Blackbushe or Kemble .

Here is the view from above Hoge Pass, looking toward the world's largest non-polar icefields in Kluane. Taken from the Kluane Ranges or Front Ranges, which average about 8,000 feet elevation. The Icefield Ranges are something else, with multiple peaks hitting 16,000 feet or more. Access to that zone is by air only - light plane or helicopter. Separating the two are big rivers and enormous glaciers.

From the pass, you can see a steep canyon leading down to the Donjek River Valley. I hiked down there with two companions a couple of years earlier. It was tricky. Recently a solo hiker had a mishap and died there; his body was not recovered until the following summer. At the bottom, the winding, gravelly Hoge Creek twists its way to drop over a ledge and disappear into the Donjek River, flowing left to right. Across the valley is the alluvial fan of Spring Creek.

There was a rough trail through the forest, going left (south) from Hoge Creek, and this brought us to some good camping spots near the mighty Donjek Glacier, 35 miles long before it empties into the river. I came face to face with a wolf on that trail. Fifteen to twenty feet away, so I had a good look - for about two seconds. It whirled away and vanished into the bushes in a flash.

On this solo trip in 1984, I didn't attempt the Hoge Creek descent, but instead stayed in the high country, walking the ridges for about a week before packing out. I had to pinch myself repeatedly to make sure I wasn't dreaming. It was incredible - rugged and spectacular beyond words.

Rushing to the Rescue - Coastguard Sikorsky s-92 G-MCGJ on a winching exercise with Criccieth RNLI 18/06/15

A Hughes 369D type 550 I am led to believe and it was first registered in 1982 !!

This is a massively rushed shot as in the middle of doing something else I heard the helicopter starting up and realised it was in the garden of a house on the other side of the nearby railway line - there are some pretty big houses over there !! Anyway , but the time I had got outside and spotted where it was going to appear it left little or no time to get anything , once above the tree line there was only seconds and it was behind a neighbours roof and it was away !!

Therefore , not as crisp a shot as I would like . I think my panning needs a lot more practice and for rapid shots I think I prefer the 70 - 300mm Canon lens as it is very quick focussing and a good all round lens , just a bit short of reach compared to the !00 - 400mm Sigma used here ( because that was the lens on the camera !! ) .

Oshkosh Airshow, Wisconsin

A rather new MH-47G sits in an LZ in Colorado. The number in the window was used for an exercise and is merely masking tape.

As always the Chinook from nearby RAF Odiham put on a stunning display at the Bournemouth airshow 2015.

Snapped this picture on vacation at Emerald Isle NC. Emerald Isle is about 20 miles north of Camp Lajune, one of two Marine training facilities for marine recruits. The helicopter was about 200 feet directly above the shoreline.

I was out shooting the sky last night and took this shot only to check for composition quite aware that there was an aircraft in the shot. I usually wait until all aircraft leave the scene before taking a shot to avoid that typical "Morse Code" dot-dash-dot-dash streak in your photo. But as it ended up, I kind of liked this shot. The helicopter was flying low and towards me instead of across the scene.

Air to air shot of Airbus Helicopters ACH160 with some of London's most iconic buildings providing a great backdrop.

Shooting over the city comes with various restrictions, we were only able to come this far down the river on 2 occasions because of traffic on approach to London City airport, so you can have the best laid plans and briefs but ultimately have to adapt in the air.

A helicopter flying over Kahurangi National Park

Slowed the shutter speed here to 1/100th of a second to keep the rotors in motion as the helicopter flew by. Just need to keep a steady hand on the long lens at this slow a shutter speed. The image stabilizer at this speed helps a lot too.
