Volga-Dnepr--named for the two major rivers in Russia and Ukraine--was formed in August 1990 through a partnership with several former Soviet aviation firms, including Antonov, Progress, and Aviastar. The idea behind Volga-Dnepr was to have an airline capable of moving oversized equipment worldwide. To do this, the airline used as their main equipment the Antonov An-124 Ruslan, originally developed for the Soviet military to move oversized loads (similar to the reason for the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy for the USAF).

 

Since heavy transports like the An-124 were rare outside the military, Volga-Dnepr immediately found a market. Oil companies, for instance, could use them to move rigs in one piece, rather than in stages, saving time and money. Militaries that lacked their own heavy-lift capability also hired Volga-Dnepr. Even those militaries with large transports utilized the airline: Volga-Dnepr's biggest customer in the past decade has been the US military, moving equipment to Afghanistan or Iraq. Besides the An-124, the airline also operates Ilyushin Il-76s (equivalent to the US C-17 Globemaster III), and for a time, flew Yakovlev Yak-40s on a small scheduled route in central Russia.

 

Volga-Dnepr has established itself as the main providers of outsize cargo transportation, although other firms exist. It moved into the scheduled cargo market by establishing a subsidiary, AirBridge Cargo, in 2004; AirBridge uses Boeing 747s.

 

The An-124 shown here is in Volga-Dnepr's current livery, with both English and Cyrillic titles. It reflects the partnership with UK-based HeavyLift and Volga-Dnepr, which lasted from 1995 to 2001. RA-82046 has been heavily damaged twice in a hard landing and a ground fire, but both times it was repaired and remains in service.
