STARING. TELLING. THOUGHT PROVOKING. IDEAS FORMING, BEFORE WE KNOW. SIT AND SEE THE FOLLY.

50mm Rokkor

Detail from a specimen for Cavalier, or neo-Cavalier, “the sans-serif italic that does its number down any fairway”, as shown in an undated Headliners catalog. No designer credited. Appears to be related to Busride by Walter Haettenschweiler (1969).

Digitized as TF Cavalier by Treacyfaces, which spans 5 weights and adds upright styles.

One year ago today I got this special shot from the last day of the 4014 chase and the last full day of my epic May 2019 railfan vacation. We started the day at Altamont where we had intended to go over the top of Aspen Mountain to get the train exiting the east portal. But we just didn't know which track he'd be on with certainty and couldn't risk it since the east portals are not in sight of each other.

This is the location these giants were built for and I just had to see them here. Work began on the tunnel in November 13, 1899, and was completed October 9, 1902, but in 1949 when traffic became too heavy, UP constructed Altamont Tunnel to the north of the original bore. At 6706 feet, Altamont is the UP’s longest tunnel east of California, and at 7268 feet it is the second highest point on the UP’s transcontinental line after the summit at Sherman Hill. This was the last part of the transcontinental line to be double tracked.

I think the best part of this spot was that it was the ONLY time we ever had the train entirely to ourselves. Just Frank, John, and me...not another railfan, photographer, or vehicle even in site...just some cattle browsing on a distant slope.

Here we see the eastbound special marching up track 2 at MP 904.6 on UP's Evanston Sub and past the steam era shanty at Altamont, Wyoming about to plunge into the mile of darkness through Aspen Tunnel. In the distance the snow covered High Uintas glisten in the northeast corner of Utah.

This is the earliest Headliners catalog I’ve seen. (See also Headliners neo-phototype(s), 1978–79 & 1987.)

The Headliners, Inc. was a phototype supplier founded in New York City in 1954 (a trademark was filed in 1961). Along with typefaces from other foundries, Headliners produced some of their own designs, as well as film reproductions of wood and metal type and extensions of other existing fonts. Later typefaces in their catalogs were prefixed with the “neo-” trademark and these were often classic designs with a raised x-height à la ITC.

In the early 1990s, the Headliners library was acquired by Treacyfaces who has released digital versions of several fonts in the collection. [Mark Simonson]

We went for a weekend break to Edinburgh a few weeks before Christmas and it was my first time visiting the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. What an amazing place, and with a very friendly photo policy - just don't take pictures in the designated exhibitions and they are happy for you to click away.

For this shot the attendant had just that moment sat down and was busy with some paperwork so I had a great opportunity to work my way around and get this lovely line up.

And no prizes for spotting the Calum Colvin image in among the pictures
