Leica M3, Leica Summicron 50mm Dual Range, Kodak Tri-X (EI 200), stand developed in Rodinal 1:100. Printed on 16x12" Ilford Multigrade IV RC using a Leitz V-35 enlarger with the Vario-Contrast Modul, and 40mm Focotar f/2.8.

This is a 16x12" handmade, silver gelatin print. Sadly, I don't own a large enough scanner to scan this properly, so this is my very best attempt to digitise the image using my Canon 7D. The real thing looks so much better; the midtones didn't translate well digitally. One of my prouder darkroom efforts! Tack sharp at full size, too. Analogue photography is a true dream!

One year ago today I got this special shot from the last day of the 4014 chase and the last full day of my epic May 2019 railfan vacation. We started the day at Altamont where we had intended to go over the top of Aspen Mountain to get the train exiting the east portal. But we just didn't know which track he'd be on with certainty and couldn't risk it since the east portals are not in sight of each other.

This is the location these giants were built for and I just had to see them here. Work began on the tunnel in November 13, 1899, and was completed October 9, 1902, but in 1949 when traffic became too heavy, UP constructed Altamont Tunnel to the north of the original bore. At 6706 feet, Altamont is the UP’s longest tunnel east of California, and at 7268 feet it is the second highest point on the UP’s transcontinental line after the summit at Sherman Hill. This was the last part of the transcontinental line to be double tracked.

I think the best part of this spot was that it was the ONLY time we ever had the train entirely to ourselves. Just Frank, John, and me...not another railfan, photographer, or vehicle even in site...just some cattle browsing on a distant slope.

Here we see the eastbound special marching up track 2 at MP 904.6 on UP's Evanston Sub and past the steam era shanty at Altamont, Wyoming about to plunge into the mile of darkness through Aspen Tunnel. In the distance the snow covered High Uintas glisten in the northeast corner of Utah.
