Some Whimbrels on the beach, seen from my hotel room (thanks, zoom! I missed shorebirds on this trip except for these!) This had the best color for identification of any of the shots. You can see the crown stripes / pale eyebrow on the closest one.

The south end of Cannon Beach is always way more jammed out than the quiet north end on the other side of Ecola Creek.

Here's one of the places that I'll be this Saturday, during the Exposure Northwest workshop led by Aaron Reed and Zeb Andrews. I'm super excited for the workshop and think that I'll learn a lot. However, the weather report makes it pretty apparent that I won't have a repeat of this night. But it will still be a great, fun experience, and maybe a good opportunity for some B&Ws.

Black Oystercatcher pair raising chicks at base of Haystack Rock. Once again I just missed seeing the young.

As you approach Cannon Beach from the Oregon Coast Highway, you see this great mass of rock off in the distance through the trees. On arriving at the beach, you can only imagine the time and elements working away at the coastline to come up with this beautiful, natural sculpture.

To make up for several days of nice weather we got a storm today. Very windy and rainy. It was so windy I decided to bundle up and go check out the beach around sunset. Not that there was a hint of the sun to be seen. There is no official weather station at Cannon Beach, so to judge the wind speed I looked at several nearby stations. Station at Clatsop Spit (the mouth of the Columbia River) gave wind speed at 44 mph and gusts of 51. Astoria was measuring around 20-25 mph with gusts of 33-41 mph. At Gardibaldi, just north of Tillamook, it was 20-23 mph with gusts of 34-41. In short, I was on the beach in gale or near-gale force winds. I took some photos and camera videos of the blowing sand, always with my back to the wind. Facing the wind, blowing sand and rain, was not pleasant, but it looked cool, especially with Haystack Rock visible. So, against common sense, I took this one video looking into the wind. Some water drops inevitably fell on the lens, but fewer than I expected.

And yes, perhaps it was a bit crazy to take a stroll on the beach in a gale storm, but I was well dressed for it and quite enjoyed it. Between the long trenchcoat, rain pants, and rain hat, I only got my hands wet; and my elbows for some reason. And the wind blew sand behind my ears.

As I was sifting through photos tonight while writing a blog post, I came across this, so I thought another Fergus photo would be alright for this Friday. So much I love here...these two, the beach, that driftwood, and, of course, Haystack rock. I love being an Oregonian.

Folks gathering at the base of Haystack Rock for tide pools or birds, or photo opportunities, about an hour after low tide on a very cool grey and foggy day. Beats the heck out of the weather in the Willamette Valley which was in the upper 90s and had forest fire smoke in air down from BC.

Sunday, we drove down the Nestucca River road all the way to HWY 101 and then over to Pacific City.. Home of one of the 2 Haystack Rocks on the Oregon coast.. There were so many people in the parking lot that Philip just stopped along the road and I shot from the car...

lucky prize winners! All the more so since we sure didn't expect sunset through all the clouds. It was glorious, obviously.

Vacation in Cannon Beach, OR

This video shows how clumsy the puffins are when walking.

Breakfast on the Oregon Coast, gotta love the seafood buffet, especially the Dungeness Crab and the yummy legs. Another sign of the intelligence and discernment of corvids.

The beach was mostly empty today due to the haze of smoke from the 2020 wildfires.

Taken while out for sunrise at Hug Point a few months ago. The visibility was pretty good that day. This is looking North (obviously) up to Cannon Beach.

One more photo of Haystack Rock and The Needles. This one was shot about an hour after first one. I liked the sky in both of them. It's always nice to stick around for a bit as sun moves and light and clouds change.

A lovely afternoon for a horseback ride on the beach! Cannon Beach, Oregon

The Starfish cling to the sides of the rock, remaining totally immobile until the tide comes back in.

Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach during a very high surf, combined with a high tide. This was taken from the top of the public staircase leading down to the beach in front of the rock. Waves were crashing up to the very back of the beach and depositing debris part way up the stairs. It's hard to see in the photo, but the lower stair railing has been smashed apart by logs.

An obelisk near Haystack Rock. The size is hard to imagine even for this smaller obelisk. Look at the people in the lower right corner. Taken at Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA.

Waking up at 5am is typically not something I do unless I have to. On our trip to the Northwest, a clear exception to this was the opportunity to shoot Oregon's coast at sunrise.

This is Cannon Beach, with the very photogenic Haystack Rock on the right and the "Needles" on the left. The blur in the sky (and water) is a result of a 13" exposure.
