Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon

Waves break over the tip of Cape Kiwanda, with Haystack Rock looming on the horizon.

Had a chance to make a short trip to Oregon over the holidays. It was towards the top of the list of places I wanted to visit and photograph. It is a great destination for landscape photography. Besides the beautiful coast, it has fantastic waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge, Crater Lake, Mount Hood, Painted Hills, and many other locations. Hope to be able to go back again to see more of this beautiful region.

Given the limited amount of time I had, I decided to focus on the coast between Cape Kiwanda on the North and Bandon on the South. Also made a quick run to a couple of waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge. Will post more shots over the next few days.

Cape Kiwanda is one of the best locations on the Oregon coast and is unique in that it is the only place formed out of sandstone rock. The weather got very cloudy and dull at sunset so did did not have a chance to take full advantage of being there.

Cannon Beach, OR - in a thick, thick fog. I purposely chose not to push the contrast up in this image to make it feel like there were ghost riders coming out of the fog.

ODC - 10/27/2017 - Rocks

Some of the other sea stacks on Cannon Beach are very striking as well. The clouds are a bit noisy here but I still like the mood of the picture. This is 3 images making up the hdr

Looking at Haystack Rock from behind the tide pools, about an hour after low tide on a very cool grey and foggy day. Beats the heck out of the weather in the Willamette Valley which was in the upper 90s and had forest fire smoke in air down from BC. Note: could only see puffins from far side of rock (north). The flat side is south.

As you approach Cannon Beach from the Oregon Coast Highway, you see this great mass of rock off in the distance through the trees. On arriving at the beach, you can only imagine the time and elements working away at the coastline to come up with this beautiful, natural sculpture.

Sunset With Haystack Rock and the Needles from Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.."Back in the Saddle Again" Freshly back from my 10 day Oregon Coast Class and trying to get un-buried working in my Edmonds Gallery. What a fantastic group we had and a good mix of weather. I always experience so many great moments on trips like this with my students. Here is one of those moments that was extra special to me in this class: After finishing up shooting Thor's well, I walked up behind two of my students sitting on the ground showing each other their images. Thor's well is not for everyone and these two lovely laddies decided not to adventure out into the crazy surf. They shot from above and were taking time to review images together. Molly and Teri were busy looking each others cameras, and complimenting each other on their images. That is the beauty of teaching all in camera photography. They went back and forth for a while and it was so nice to hear the happiness in there voices over their photography and images they captured. Then I yelled out to Molly to show Teri the Heart she has captured while shooting the Spouting Horn. Molly had captured a blast of spray from the Spouting Horn that floated up in a perfect heart. Teri looked at it and says "Oh my Gosh, that is Amazing!" and then these two ladies (who had never met each other before my class).....Hugged!...And they are now friends and making plans to join me in an upcoming adventure together to the Grand Tetons. One of my favorite moments of this class. Well done ladies! This is Sunset From Cannon Beach Oregon, where we started this 10 day adventure! Thank you so much for looking!

Aggregating Anemones, spread out more than a lot of the ones clustering on the rocks... or at least they are as far as this picture shows :-) I have never before googled a species of critter and found a reputable looking site that talks about them and uses the phrase "clone wars." There's a story here. www.pugetsound.edu/academics/academic-resources/slater-mu...

Haystock Rock, Cannon Beach, Ore.

Like a star that can't wait for the night.

Haystack Rock is a 235-foot (72-meter) sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon. A popular tourist destination, the monolithic rock is adjacent to the beach and accessible by foot at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs. The rock is also a nesting site for many seabirds, including terns and puffins

Oregon Christmas [6 of 9]

Busy day of photographing today. No rain and the light was beautiful this morning. Our first stop was Ecola State Park. I was hoping to photograph at Indian Beach today, but the road is closed due to slides. The view of Haystack Rock from Ecola is one of the iconic views of the north Oregon Coast. The dramatic light, clouds, and mist gave an other worldly quality to this scene.

Taken at Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA. It is lower tide.

Luck was on my side when I was here; a thin layer of mist on the ground made for some great pics.

The Oregon coast gives us a never-ending display of incredible beauty.
