Sand and clouds streak the foreground and sky as the sun prepares to set near Chief Kiwanda Rock, also known as Haystack Rock, off the shore of Pacific City, Oregon.
After a day to restore body and bike, 63-mile ride from Bandon to Gold Beach. A beautiful day along the coast. Caught up with fellow cyclists that I met in Pacific City.

A sunset during a stormy evening..It would rain, then the sun would pop out, then it would hail, then rain and so on..A fun evening on the Cape...
Deep down from a dusty archive.
A multiple exposure shot.
Minor cloning to remove ghosts.
Adjusted a bit of exposure, shadow, clarity and contrast.

After enduring downpours, patience payed off. With the moon at my back, the last of the clouds parted, revealing a starry sky.

A friend and I took a couple day trip up to Pacific City to photograph the dory fishermen pushing their boats into the ocean at dawn. Unfortunately the surf was too high. But the night before the weather was balmy and people were out on the beach with campfires watching the sunset and the stars come out
Haystack Rock from the dunes. At 235 feet tall, it is the 3rd tallest intertidal monolith in the world.
All of those white spots in the grass on top of the rock are birds...mostly gulls. You can also see a lot of them flying around above the rock.
Cannon Beach is one of the most popular beaches along the Oregon Coast. Its proximity to Portland results in a steady influx of beach goers trying to find relief from the hustle and bustle of the city. Haystack Rock shown above, is the main feature here, at least as far as natural wonders are concerned. The rock is a major nesting site for the Puffin. The town itself is full of upscale B&Bs, restaurants, and small boutique shops.
On this moody overcast day, the Puffins were just beginning to arrive in force. I found this far more interesting than the shopping potential in town.

Went down to Oregon for a few hours. Very windy, but other than that it was a beautiful day.

A surfer heads in after spending a gorgeous afternoon and evening catching waves off the shore of Pacific City, Oregon, in October.
Coastline Olympic Ntl. Park, WA, USA. La Push. For us, these haystack rocks were absolutely fascinating.

This shot is straight out of the camera, converted from RAW. The sunset started out kind of boring and gray. You didn't get to see much of the sun as it set. Then about 15-20 minutes post sunset things really lit up. I was running back and forth between my favorite angles before it went away after about 5 minutes. Just shows that you never know what will happen in the next minute after you leave.

The Pelican Brewpub on the beach at Pacific City, Oregon is the hub for the surfing scene at Cape Kiwanda. This image was taken from the Inn at Cape Kiwanda.
Here, have some of my purple kool-aid.
This is one more from my trip with Amy to Cannon Beach last fall. Just wanted some color today because I've been doing a lot of B&Ws lately.
And I figured Greg-0 would like the purple one. :)
Update: I just heard a little bit ago that Greg had his camera gear stolen from his car today. It sucks when bad things happen to good people, and Greg is one of the nicest I know. Greg, hang in there buddy, and let us know if you need anything. And this one's for you.
This was perhaps the most memorable sunset I have experience at Cannon Beach. It was cloudy and rainy most of the day, but these kind of conditions also helped cleared the air and when the sun finally broke through there was magic. I usually avoid Cannon Beach due to the crowds, but I am a little more tolerant of people asserting their right to also enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature these days. I zapped several people out of this picture but kept a few toward the center in. They are admiring nature's beauty also, and were part of the overall atmosphere and mood of this place on the occasion of this gorgeous sunset
I had heard rumors years ago of the mythical Pentax 67 mount Lensbaby that the company once produced. So when I made the acquaintance of local photographer Keri Friedman recently and discovered she worked at Lensbaby I naturally had to ask her about this famed beast. She told me she thought she had one around the shop. A couple days later she e-mailed saying that they did indeed have one. So I took a trip down to Lensbaby in SE Portland, got a tour, got to chat with the founder Craig Strong and finally laid my hands on something that had been lingering at the edge of my radar for years.
This Lensbaby is the old 3G style, so it is the precursor to what would become the Control Freak. You cannot swap out the optics on it, and apertures are drop-in style, but being a 3G, as opposed to a 1.0 or 2.0, means you can lock the movements down. That is a big plus for me because I have not only wanted to do more medium format tilt/swing/shift experimentation, but to do it with long exposure and one cannot really hand-hold such a movement in place for 8 minute exposures... thought I have thought about trying it.
Being me, I couldn't just go out and keep it simple so I loaded my Pentax 67 with the Rollei Superpan 200 and shot most of the roll with an R72 infrared filter in place. So Lensbaby + infrared... the only thing I am missing at this point is the long exposure. But there are some technical challenges to getting filters on the front of this thing. Nothing I cannot work around though.

I captured this landscape photograph of the winter sunset behind Haystack Rock along the Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach, Oregon. The occasional receding wave provided nice reflections of the silhouetted rocks and the colorful sky.
