Haystack Rock

Cannon Beach, OR

Haystack Rock is a large 72m tall basalt sea stack that dominates Cannon Beach. It is home to seabirds including puffins, and the area around its base are made of tide pools. The smaller rocks around it are known as the "Needles". Haystack Rock is a well-known Oregon landmark, in novels such as Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion, movies such as the Goonies (1985) and one of the desktop photos for Windows 7. Haystack Island is part of Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

I'm not a fan of posed photographs, so I waited for the official photographer to finish his stuff and while they were walking back from the beach, I got this.

Haystack Rock on the Oregon Coast

Haystack Rock at sunset. The sunset was pretty much a bust, but some of the thickening clouds did turn a little pink.

I've never seen haystack rolls this large... these were approximately 3 - 4 times the size of a two-story house. Unbelievable! :o)

I came across these sweet little children during a (relatively) recent trip to rural Yunnan, China. My group happened to have a balloon-making expert with us!

One of the few best shots I did for lomography. I guess this would have looked better with a fisheye lens. I was lacking of a lens hood but I guessed the sun flare would make the background more interesting?

A perfect day to hike - low humidity and cool temperatures.

Elk Lake parking lot and hike to Panther Gorge via the Elk Lake Marcy trail. We will hike over the shoulder of Pinnacle and through Marcy Swamp to get to Panther Gorge, which lies between New York's first and third highest mountains, Marcy and Haystack. This area hosts some of the most remote backcountry hiking in the Adirondacks.

Cuts, bruises, a new 46er, hiking out in the dark (13 hour day) full sky of stars, shooting stars and alas, no bear or moose.

It is quiet hard to photograph this place and do justice to it! This huge structure located at the canon beach has amazing sunset view! With sunset setting at the backdrop, it creates shadows of the rock, making it hard to recover either the details in the skies or details in the rock! Staying home and learning to work with lightroom can be fun!

Day 23- The gnome and I took a walk to Haystack Rock, the great natural wonder of Cannon Beach

This image was originally going to be a panoramic image. However, when I processed it, my eyes were never drawn towards the rocks and the hills but off to one corner of the image. I decided to try a square crop, exposure blend for the sky, colour look-up for the scene as well as a warming filter and vignette.

I hope that you like this and all comments and criticisms are welcome.

I would love to know what your thoughts are on exposure blending and colour look-ups and adding warming filters in post-production as well as other post-processing. Is it good, bad? Do you think the image should all be made in-camera?
