Some time back this birding season I was with my friend Lorri, looking for Sandhill Crane chicks on the west coast of Florida when we found this lovely sunrise. (Sony a1, 400mm f/2.8 at f/7.1, 1/400 second, ISO 640)

At Harns Marsh, Lee County, Florida., USA.

The Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) breeds in swamps and marshes in the eastern US, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America, along the Brazil coast as far south as Paraná State. It's a nocturnal bird that preys on small crustaceans, mollusks, frogs, aquatic insects, and small fish.

This sandhill crane was preening away and would occasionally look up. All I had to do was wait for the right moment. The early morning light was just perfect to highlight this beautiful bird!

I went to Harn's Marsh specifically looking for cranes and they did not disappoint. I saw about a dozen or so, more than ever.

I was glad to be close to this beach as it quickly became my favourite on the island of Phuket. It was busier than most too - there seemed to be a lot of Russian people staying nearby

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Harns/Harlingen, Nieuwe Willemshaven, Trechter Hotel (uncut)

A spectacular minimalist example of industrial transformation in Harlingen Harbour. I never knew an old sand hopper could function as a place to live in. It's the 'Trechter Hotel'.

In the early 1900s, this mobile red sand hopper was Rotterdam-based. It served as a transfer point for sand, gravel and other bulk goods from ships to trucks and was transported to Harlingen. In 2018 the funnel was transformed into a luxurious Bed and breakfast, luckily retaining its red livery.

This is number 6 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 35 of Naar het Noorden.

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Harns/Harlingen, Rommelhaven, Leeuwenbrug, Grote sluis (uncut)

The city of Harlingen is defined by its locks and bridges. Shown here are the Leeuwenbrug (named after the four statues of lions (1788) that carry the coat of arms of Harlingen and the Grote sluis (Big lock) at the Rommelhaven.

This is number 18 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 53 of Naar het Noorden.

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Harns/Harlingen, Noordooster singel, Franekereind, Singelbrug (cut from B&T)

The Singel bridge (1908) crosses the Noordoostersingel, connecting the Franekereind to the Noorderkade. It was renovated in 2017 and is a draw bridge—construction: riveted iron girders with a wooden deck. The base of the bridge consists of concrete and natural stone and is founded on piles. The R. Koster company of Stadskanaal manufactured the steel Art Nouveau decoration.

On the left is the "Engelse tuin" city park.

This is number 5 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 34 of Naar het Noorden.

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Waddenzee, Harns/Harlingen, Dike, Nieuwe Willemshaven, Lightship 8, People (cut from B&T)

The highlight of the Nieuwe Willemshaven is the lightship Jenni Baynton (aka Light Vessel 8). It was built in 1949 in the UK and was used as a discotheque 'Barocca' in Rotterdam throughout the nineties. Tighter municipal regulations put an end to that. The ship was stored in Waalhaven and thoroughly trashed by junks and vagrants. It was transported to Harlingen and renovated /transformed into a radio ship - between 2005 and 2015, 'Radio Waddenzee' was transmitted from the ship.

This is number 12 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 42 of Naar het Noorden.

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Harns/Harlingen, Harbour, Yacht (slightly cut from B&T)

Harlingen’s harbour has many sailing vessels, mostly vintage ‘skûtjes’. Some not, like this one. They all offer Waddenzee group tours.

This is number 11 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 41 of Naar het Noorden.

When I heard that I might find limpkins at Harn’s Marsh in Lehigh Acres I went to look them up on my trusty iBird app as I had no clue what they looked like. Armed with this knowledge I set off one morning in search of them and a couple of other species I had not seen or photographed before. The Marsh did not disappoint, for no sooner had I got out of my car and headed for a pond I saw limpkins around the shoreline. Score!

I knew that they ate mollusks, but I had no idea how they opened them up. I soon found out. A limpkin picked up a clam shell and proceeded to tip it up on end. It would slip the tip of its beak inside the shell and then proceed to lift it up and then push down, hoping to pry the shell apart. After a few attempts it succeeded in opening the shell and then downed the treat inside. Nature is so ingenious!

Thanks so much for your views, faves and comments!

The YE 57 Eben Haezer is operated by Gebroeders

Nieuwenhuize B.V. from Yerseke and engages in mussel and oyster fishery. It was built in 1994 by Stocznia Txzw Sp in Tcew (Poland) and Maaskant in Bruinisse (Holland), It has two Cummins engines (702 kW). Size: 38,00 x 9,00 x 2,70 m, draught 0,840 m.

By the way: a cutter is smaller than a trawler (in Katwijk it's called a 'trolder'), mainly operates on the North Sea and only stays at sea two to five days in a row.

This is number 2 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 31 of Naar het Noorden.

It took 7.2 miles of hiking and searching, but I finally got one! This snail kite proved mighty elusive as I saw it flying but could not get close as marshy water and what lurked beneath (can you say alligators and snakes?) kept me from venturing into a sketchy shortcut. When I did find a path (long and hot), it was not thrilled with my approach, so it took off long before I could get very close. Given that, I do really like the environment in which this beautiful male was resting. A lifer for me!

There are only about 1,000 snail kites in the US so they are on both the Federal and Florida the endangered species lists. Their food source is solely the apple snail, so as that population dwindles (loss of habitat) so unfortunately does this beautiful bird.

These three buoys pulled out of the water kinda looked like a sculpture group. The contraptions on top of the middle and right one are there to make the buoys better visible on the radar.

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Harns/Harlingen, Dokkade, Klippers (uncut)

The Dokkade is the home of Harlingen’s charter klipper fleet. If I’m not mistaken, the ship on the left is the Averechts, a two-masted cargo klipper built in 1992 and 100 years after that converted for the charter market. It can accommodate 30 people in 7 cabins. The price for a weekend group charter is about 4000 E.

In the BG is a converted Figee harbour crane - the holiday rental ´Dromen aan zee´ now.

This is number 17 of the Harns/Harlingen album and 52 of Naar het Noorden.
