Two primary school buildings by Herman. Hertzberger, 1980-1983, Amsterdam
Grouped around a communal courtyard are three schools, the so-called Apollo schools, which harmonize with their surroundings because of their villa-like appearance. The Montessori School and Willemspark School were designed by Herman Hertzberger, the third school was designed by Liesbeth van der Pol. The two schools by Hertzberger are based on an identical basic scheme: a square, in the four corners of which are classrooms grouped around a central hall. By introducing variation in the detailing and through the positioning of the windows, the architect has given each school its own identity. The schools have been positioned so that the schoolyard is divided into a semi-public section and a more sheltered section; this latter area has been specially designed for small children. The infants have an entrance on the ground floor, beneath the exterior stairway. The entrances for the older children are situated above, on either side of a spacious hall which also functions as an auditorium. This space is used not only for performances, but also as a place where children can work individually or in groups. The plan functions in such a way that users and visitors are led via subtle transitions from the public street to the compact enclosed space in the school.

“Tea tempers the spirit and harmonizes the mind; dispels lassitude and relieves fatigue, awakens thought and prevents drowsiness”

tea...oh i could wax lyrical about a cuppa, a brew, cup o'char, chai, te...i was brought up a tea drinker but have been a coffee drinker for many years...recently i had an almost damascene convertion to tea again....english breakfast tea for preference but i'll run to any fair traded organic tea if pushed.

Over 45 years ago America harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name.” This Grammy winning light folk-rock band from London became a musical sensation with an impressive string of hits including “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” “Sister Golden Hair,” and “You Can Do Magic.” Christopher Cross’ smoothly sophisticated ballads helped define adult contemporary radio in the 1980s. His well-recognized hits include “Ride Like the Wind,” “Never Be the Same,” “Say You’ll Be Mine,” “Think of Laura,” and “Arthur’s Theme,” along with his Grammy winning Song of the Year, “Sailing.”
Surviving cancer and using art as a tool for healing, reflection and understanding has infused my art with a sense of energy and optimism that has a universal appeal. The process of making the art as well as the meaning of it, are both an integral part of the end result and for me there is always a battle to harmonize between the two – to evoke the emotion of the piece and to empower the viewer.
I love combining traditional and new media painting techniques where one feeds off the energy of the other. The visual collaboration of both medias often celebrates a bold expressionism and optimistic edge regardless of subject matter.
My work has evolved from a mashing of referenced pop art and iconic imagery into elaborate multilayered portraits and scenes that depict a more personal interpretation of my life experience, battles and passions. My goal is to lead the observer to dramatic action, putting them on the edge between what we know and what is unknowable. I’ve learned that something new will always come about when you push hard enough and the result is the revelation of a “new identity”.
The motivation for me to keep going is to gain an understanding of how this “new identity or rebirth or truth” actually reflects my life as well as the world we live in – or not.
