A unique project—Jacob Collier’s first-ever college residency—brought together the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble, MIT’s Ben Bloomberg and other members of the MIT music community.

Collier’s music combines elements of jazz, a cappella, world, contemporary classical, pop, gospel, R&B and soul. He is well known for his viral YouTube videos, which have turned numerous legendary artists into fans, including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, David Crosby, Jamie Cullum, Take 6 and Quincy Jones—now his manager/mentor.

In 2014, he began working with MIT’s Ben Bloomberg (a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab) who helped transform Collier’s video productions into live one-man-show performances. Bloomberg also designed and created a custom unique Vocal Harmonizer, which has provided Collier a vehicle to simultaneously combine his vocal and keyboard talents live.

Collier’s December residency at MIT—culminating with a major concert in Kresge Auditorium on December 10—involved several first-time elements. Collier and the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble (FJE) with additional musicians presented the premiere of an experimental piece crafted by Collier. Several new big band arrangements of Collier’s music were also featured, two of which crafted by MIT alumnus Jamshied Sharifi and one by Collier himself. The concert included Collier performing some jazz standards with the FJE as well as some solo performances.

They lean in toward each other so that their sounds will blend and harmonize.

A recent proposal attempting to harmonize Europe's copyright laws has stirred up fresh controversy because copyright law in several EU countries does not enshrine freedom of panorama for photography in public places.

As a college student bicycling around Europe in the summer of 1980, I visited the (deserted) grounds of the Expo '58 World's Fair in Belgium. On a very drab and misty day I snapped this routine tourist shot. (The tiny figure of my trip partner Tom can be seen below the lowest sphere.) That I might be violating some law by posting this photo seems profoundly absurd to me.

The right to photograph in public places is a cornerstone of free speech. Photographs are often simply personal expression; but they also may be commentary or satire on the state of the world, or may expose wrongs (as has happened all too often recently in this country, documenting abusive police). This is a democratic freedom deserving the strongest protection. An attempt to control copyright in a widely-visible structure for the possible profit of its owner cannot overrule the right to free speech.

I hope the European Parliament comes to the right decision about this.

Thanks to a double voice box, this thrush can self harmonize to produce beautiful, haunting songs. Seen at Summerhaven. Mt. Lemmon.

One measure is the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).

Over 45 years ago America harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name.” This Grammy winning light folk-rock band from London became a musical sensation with an impressive string of hits including “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” “Sister Golden Hair,” and “You Can Do Magic.” Christopher Cross’ smoothly sophisticated ballads helped define adult contemporary radio in the 1980s. His well-recognized hits include “Ride Like the Wind,” “Never Be the Same,” “Say You’ll Be Mine,” “Think of Laura,” and “Arthur’s Theme,” along with his Grammy winning Song of the Year, “Sailing.”

Tradition and modernity are thus harmonized within a new banking service design model: innovation is perceived since the entrance, an informal open space area, where clients are welcome by the bank attendants to take a seat on one of the different counseling areas.

Harmonizing with the lovely Sharon Robinson.
