Guilin is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, renowned worldwide for its stunning karst systems. Situated on the west bank of the Li River, which flows through the city and serves as a central scenic artery, Guilin encompasses an area of approximately 27,800 square kilometers and is bordered by Hunan Province to the north. As of 2023, the city's total population stands at about 4.95 million, with around 1.2 million residents in its urban core, making it a significant regional hub. The city's geography is dominated by a tropical karst landform, characterized by tower-like peaks, depressions, and underground waterways formed over millions of years through dissolution processes, with the Li River cruise being one of its most iconic attractions. Guilin experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with mild, short winters averaging 7–10°C (45–50°F), hot and humid summers reaching 28–35°C (82–95°F), and annual precipitation exceeding 1,900 mm (75 inches), primarily during the rainy season from May to August. Administratively, Guilin governs six urban districts, eight counties, two autonomous counties, and one county-level city, reflecting its blend of Han Chinese and Zhuang ethnic influences in a diverse cultural mosaic. Throughout imperial China, Guilin served as a vital trade route linking southern frontiers to the Yangtze River basin, fostering a rich literary and artistic tradition inspired by its ethereal scenery, often immortalized in classical poetry and paintings. Economically, Guilin is a pillar of Guangxi's development, with tourism as its cornerstone industry, attracting over 100 million visitors annually pre-pandemic and generating substantial revenue through scenic sites like the Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave, and Longji Rice Terraces. The sector contributes significantly to local GDP, supported by agriculture—particularly rice, tea, and subtropical fruits—and emerging industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and eco-tourism integration with rural revitalization efforts. In 2024, foreign trade reached 11.39 billion yuan (about $1.6 billion USD), underscoring Guilin's growing role in international commerce while balancing environmental preservation of its UNESCO-recognized karst heritage. As China's inaugural "world-class tourism city," Guilin continues to emphasize sustainable development, harmonizing its natural splendor with modern infrastructure to promote cultural exchange and economic resilience.
Guilin is situated in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, at approximately 25°16′N 110°17′E. The prefecture-level city encompasses a total area of about 27,800 square kilometers, encompassing both urban and expansive rural landscapes. Iconic formations include Elephant Trunk Hill, a prominent peak resembling an elephant sipping from the Li River, and Folded Brocade Hill, noted for its layered, colorful rock strata that evoke folded silk. The Li River, a major waterway flowing through the area, meanders among these peaks, creating scenic corridors that highlight the interplay of water and stone, while numerous caves—such as those in the surrounding hills—add to the subterranean complexity. Geologically, Guilin's karst features originated from a thick succession of Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous limestones, up to 3,000 meters deep, deposited in a ancient platform environment. Over millions of years, particularly the last 40 million, tectonic uplift combined with dissolution by rainwater and flowing rivers eroded the soluble carbonate rocks, sculpting the dramatic peaks and forming the end-stage karst evolution seen today. This process has resulted in a landscape where urban development in Guilin city occupies the relatively flat Lijiang River basin, while rural outskirts extend into more rugged, hill-dotted expanses.
Guilin experiences a humid subtropical climate classified under the Köppen system as Cfa, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, damp winters. The average annual temperature is 19.4°C, with July marking the warmest month at an average of 28.6°C and January the coolest at 8.9°C. This temperature regime supports a growing season that spans most of the year, influencing both local agriculture and the influx of tourists seeking comfortable outdoor activities. Annual precipitation totals approximately 1,900 mm, predominantly occurring during the summer rainy season from June to August, when heavy downpours contribute over half of the yearly total. Fog and mist are prevalent, particularly in the karst landscapes, often shrouding the hills and rivers in a characteristic haze that enhances Guilin's scenic allure. These conditions result from the interplay of monsoon winds and the region's topography, leading to high humidity levels averaging 70-80% throughout the year. Historical climate records from 1951 to 2020 indicate a warming trend, with average temperatures rising by 0.5–1°C since the 1980s, attributable to global warming patterns observed across China. Extreme weather events punctuate this climate, including influences from typhoons that channel heavy rainfall inland from the South China Sea. Notable floods, such as the 1998 event that severely impacted the Li River basin, caused widespread inundation and disruption, while rare snowfalls occasionally occur in winter, adding to the variability of seasonal conditions.

While working on my Brussels series, I visited the Pannenhuis metro station—an unexpectedly cinematic location. The sharp, direct overhead light sliced through the platform like a spotlight, highlighting passengers as they boarded or disembarked. Every shot was about capturing that fleeting moment when movement, expression, and the architecture came together perfectly.
I value the vivid visual contrast in this scene. The deep shadows combined with sleek architectural lines create a minimalist aesthetic, almost like a stage set. The woman’s orange headwrap immediately draws attention against this background. Its hue reflects the ceiling’s glow, and her red sandals mirror this color, adding a subtle rhythm to the image. She is lit by a patch of light, absorbed in her phone, unaware of the symmetry she introduces. The scene appears natural and unstaged, yet all elements harmonize, resulting in a quietly striking and precise composition.

Museum of Ethnography Budapest Hungary

The new building of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest City Park (Városliget) was opened 2022. The award-winning new museum building – which is part of Europe’s largest urban-cultural development called Liget Budapest Project has dynamic yet simple lines simultaneously harmonized with the park environment and communicating with the surrounding urban area.
The collection, which comprises 250.000 items from the Carpathian Basin and from every corner of the world, has been hosted by various facilities since its establishment in 1872, but never in its history did it operate in a building designed specifically to cater to its needs. The project was one of over 1700 entries from 115 countries. According to the decision of an international jury, the competition was won by the Hungarian architectural studio, Napur Architect (beating leading world-class architect studios such as Zaha Hadid, BIG), whose building is distinguished by a dynamic yet simple design harmonized with the natural environment of the park while communicating with the urban texture of its surroundings. The gently curving lines enable the building to function as a gateway and a passage linking the city and the park. Sixty percent of the structure is under ground level, and thanks to the landscaped roof and the transparency of the sections over the ground, the new museum is adapted to its environment in its scale too. The grass-covered roof area will be a pleasant community space awaiting visitors to Városliget.
The spectacular trademark of the building is the glass curtain wall surrounding the landscaped roof garden, reminiscent of two intertwined hillsides, with a unique characteristic, consisting of nearly half a million pixels, a raster made by metal grid based on ethnographic motifs selected from the museum's Hungarian and international collections.
The new functions and flexible spaces of the modern and state-of-the-art museum building will facilitate the understanding of the historical heritage embodied by the collection as well as the various aspects of contemporary society. Besides passing down this historical heritage, the realization of more recent professional and research themes and perspectives continues to be among the priority objectives of the museum, as confirmed by its mission. The creatively built spaces will open up new opportunities to communicate with visitors, enabling the presentation of the everyday objects, phenomena, and ideas of the past and the present side by side.

Model: Adrina
Another sample shot from my model work. Here I was playing with colors, textures and composition and how to best utilize only natural daylight (open shade) for lighting in an outdoor model shoot situation, working with professional model Adrina on location in a cowboy town in Arizona. I liked how the color of this old weathered red door harmonized with her outfit, so we used it as a backdrop.This was taken the day after the previous image I posted of her, and the weather had again turned much brighter.

This photo was captured from the western pier of Cadzand-Bad's small harbor, around the middle area. I was struck by the clean design of the navigation tower, which contrasted sharply with the open sea and sky.
I opted for black and white to emphasize the lines and shapes. Although it’s a simple scene, I appreciate how everything harmonizes—clear, calm, and balanced. It’s a perfect example of how functional coastal features can also produce striking images.

Colas Railfreight 56105 approaches the Low House level crossing heading the 6J37 13:09 Carlisle Yard to Chirk timber on Saturday 6 September 2014, the hues of the moss and cumbrian sandstone of the occupation bridge conveniently harmonizing with the striking livery of the 'Grid'.

RAINBOW BRIDGE
The Rainbow Bridge (レインボーブリッジ ) is a suspension bridge crossing northern Tokyo Bay between Shibaura Pier and the Odaiba waterfront development in Minato, Tokyo, Japan.
Construction started in 1987 and was completed in 1993. The bridge is 798 metres (2,618 ft) long with a main span of 580 metres (1,903 ft). Officially called the "Shuto Expressway No. 11 Daiba Route - Port of Tokyo Connector Bridge," the name "'Rainbow Bridge" was decided by the public.
The towers supporting the bridge are white in color, designed to harmonize with the skyline of central Tokyo seen from Odaiba. There are lamps placed on the wires supporting the bridge, which are illuminated into three different colors, red, white and green every night using solar energy obtained during the day.
The bridge can be accessed by foot from Tamachi Station (JR East) or Shibaura-futō Station (Yurikamome) on the mainland side.

Summer home for local financier and philanthropist Morton Plant . The mansion was built at the turn of the 20th century. It has panoramic views of Fishers Island and Long Island Sound and was designed by Plant’s wife Nellie, who had studied architecture at the Sorbonne in Paris, and was implemented by English architect Robert W. Gibson. The exterior was done almost entirely in the Tudor style, using granite quarried from the grounds in order to harmonize with the estate’s natural surroundings. The interior was a melange of several different styles, including Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, and even Flemish. Materials used for the interior ranged from rich woods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, to imported stone and metals such as onyx, marble, sandstone, bronze, and iron. A two-story marble fireplace was the focal point of the house. In the 1960's, the estate was turned over to the University of Connecticut for use as a branch campus. The Avery Point campus was established on the property in 1967.

Art Nouveau is considered a "total" art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts, as well as the fine arts. According to the philosophy of the style, art should be a way of life. For many well-off Europeans, it was possible to live in an art nouveau-inspired house with art nouveau furniture, silverware, fabrics, ceramics including tableware, jewellery, cigarette cases, etc. Artists desired to combine the fine arts and applied arts, even for utilitarian objects.
The Japonisme that was popular in Europe during the 1880s and 1890s was particularly influential on many artists with its organic forms and references to the natural world.

Captured at dusk through the delicate interplay of wire fencing, this image centers on the solitary figure of an enigmatic woman’s statue, poised gracefully upon the verdant slopes of Rotorua’s Aorangi Peak. The statue stands in silent vigil, harmonizing with the natural tapestry of the landscape.
The beginning of the 1930’s marks the democratization of aerodynamics in the car lines. Each manufacturer tries to harmonize its range with more contemporary offerings, including Peugeot with its 301 Profilée version. The model we present is in an advanced state of preservation, but is very healthy. Its paint is not the original one, and shows an old quality restoration. The interior is complete, but the upholstery is in a rather used state. From a mechanical point of view, a restoration will be necessary, but the package seems to be in good condition. Here is the opportunity to acquire one of the rare survivors of the 301 Profilée versions!

Laos has remained virtually unchanged for half a century. Rich in history and culture, Laos and its peoples, more than 47 ethnic groups, harmonize life to ancient rhythms and traditions that evoke timeless Asia. The vast majority of Lao people live in Laos is approximately 4 million. Laos is generally very rural areas, and Many Lao people support by agriculture, with rice being the most important crop. Women hold dual responsibility for farm at home. In rice farming women in Laos have a substantial role. Traditionally, men plough, make bunds and prepare seedbeds, and women do more than half of the transplanting of rice, weeding, harvesting, threshing and post-harvest operations. Aside from this enumerated work, a gender division of labour exists in Laos which assigns women the major responsibility for childcare and housework. As household size averages seven people these tasks require numerous hours of work each day in addition to women's work outside their home. Such hard life for elderly women where life expectancy is 59 years est. 2008. Although the trappings of the modern world are becoming increasingly visible, Laos remains the least developed country in Southeast Asia. Laos has enjoyed high economic growth, despite poor national infrastructure and a dominant, inefficient agriculture sector. It is also heavily reliant on international assistance programs. In 1998, Laos began formal negotiations with the World Trade Organization. In 2008 a 5.60 US$/day per capita.
Along the way to Wat Luang temple in Pakse we met this old woman. She was sitting in front of her house busy with household duties. Lao women have played a central role in the national country's and household economies over the past two decades. Women's participation exceeds men's in the economically active population. Due to dual responsibility for farm and household they are usually overburdened with work. At home some of these duties include water collection, which may take two to three hours a day; husking rice for family consumption, which may require two hours of work; milling rice; and caring for the sick and the elderly. Girls assist their mothers with these chores and they are often made responsible for care of younger kids. In spite of their major economic contribution, women are generally not considered as workers. However, women, particularly older ones, do control household budgets and share in financial decision making. However, for some intangible reason, the Lao people are still wonderfully friendly, hospitable and passionate. They do not have much, but show it off with pride and wear warming smiles.

Woodland is my most challenging subject. Finding the order in the chaos of Appalachian forests is not easy, but making the order into a compelling composition is even harder. I scouted this area several months ago, but winter was not a good time for this location. Spring transformed the forest floor into a bright green carpet of ferns. These ancient plants with their symmetrical shapes created an enchanting pattern that instantly caught my attention. I slowly walked around the area looking for the composition that will create a sense of depth and harmonize all the elements of the forest. After a few minutes, I found a beautiful tree for the foreground and composed this scene.

Le lit et ses draperies devenaient ainsi un élément important de la décoration d'une maison : on assortissait rideaux; draps et autres étoffes, en donnant de la couleur à la pièce principale. Le lit est court : à cette époque on dormait quasiment assis, dans une position considérée plus saine pour la digestion et la circulation sanguine.

Canopy bed, Southern Netherlands, seventeenth century, oak. Until late in the seventeenth century, it was not unusual that the bed was erect in the living room, near the warm hearth. Curtains hanging from the canopy or on the front of a box bed, in common use, protected the occupants from the cold. The bed and draperies thus became an important part of the decoration of a house : one harmonized curtains, sheets and other textiles, giving color to the main room. The bed is short: at that time one slept almost sitting in a position considered healthier for digestion and blood circulation.

THE CHIRINGUITO BEGAN IN CUBA: "Chiringuito" is the diminutive form of "chiringo," a West Indian word that originally referred to a stream of water or trickle.
In Cuba, a rudimentary way to serve coffee without a coffee maker is to use a stocking as a filter and strain the boiling water (equivalent to the Spanish sock coffee).
The stream of coffee that came out of the stocking was called a "chiringuito," and later the makeshift kiosks made with straw where this coffee was made also came to be called that way.
Sugar or coffee plantation workers, when taking a break, would say "let's go to the chiringuito."
FROM SITGES (BARCELONA) TO ALL OF SPAIN: The origin of the chiringuito in Spain is found in the town of Sitges, south of Barcelona.
Numerous "Indianos" from the Catalan bourgeoisie settled in Sitges.
"Indianos" were the businessmen who had had lucrative businesses in the Antilles, and when they returned to Spain, they had stately homes built for themselves in beautiful outlying towns, such as Sitges, Ribadesella (Asturias) y many other places.
In the area's bars, when the Indianos wanted a coffee, they would say, "Give me a chiringuito."

Este delicioso arroz con marisco nos fue servido en un restaurante junto a la playa de San Juan de Los Terreros, Pulpí, Almería, Andalucía, España.
En el recipiente, llamado paella, se pueden apreciar variados mariscos, como bogavante, gambas, almejas, calamares...
Todo muy bien armonizado con las expertas manos de "Charly" un cocinero chileno que hace los arroces mucho mejor que muchos cocineros españoles.
Actualmente, se puede saborear la variada carta de platos hechos por Charly en el "Chiringuito Perichan".
En España, a estos restaurantes junto a la playa se les llama "chiringuitos", que es una palabra de origen cubano.
EL CHIRINGUITO EMPEZÓ EN CUBA: «Chiringuito» es la forma diminutiva de «chiringo», palabra antillana que originalmente se refería a un chorro de agua o chorrito.
En Cuba, una forma rudimentaria de servir el café sin necesidad de cafetera es usando una media como filtro y colar el agua hirviendo (equivalente al café de calcetín o de manga español).
El chorro de café que salía de la media era llamado chiringuito, y después a los quioscos improvisados con cañas donde se hacía este café, también se llamaron así.
Los trabajadores de las plantaciones de azúcar o café, al tomarse un descanso decían «vamos al chiringuito».

En los bares de la zona, los indianos cuando querían un café decían: «Ponme un chiringuito».
