56 Birkendale, Upperthorpe, Sheffield.

Built by the Birkendale Land Society.

Birkendale was established by means of a Freehold Land Society and was the second such Land Society to be set up in Sheffield. The plots were given to the members in January 1848. Freehold Land Society developments played a major role in the growth of Sheffield's suburbs in the mid to late 19th century.

The members were lent £70 to build a 'good substantial house' on their land, and paid back the value of the loan plus interest over 14 years. In January 1849, Birkendale was put forward in a meeting in the Town Hall as an example of the benefits of a Freehold Land Society. The Chairman visited Birkendale and was delighted at what he saw, he felt it was a 'beautiful and healthy situation, and possessed many advantages.' He also thought 'it was a most desirable undertaking for steady, respectable working men to join in'.

The original members of the Birkendale Land Society were, overwhelmingly, workers in the cutlery industry, with the inhabitants in 1851 making everything from scissors to spring knives.

In 1856 the people were still mostly manufacturers but there was also a bookseller, a painter, a clerk and two grocers. By 1862, an ivory cutter and a mason had a house here, and by 1864 there was a district rate collector who was also hon. sec. to Steel Bank Bowling Green and a brewer. Many of the original families were still there.

1865 was the year in which the original members finally paid off their loans.

In 1876, a sub-editor, a music teacher, a day-school owner and a pawnbroker were some of the occupations of people living on the newly named streets - Birkendale, Birkendale View and Birkendale Road. In 1879, several drapers and a harmonium manufacturer were here.

There were around 65 houses and all are included within the Birkendale Conservation Area.

Kaizer's Orchestra plays oil barrels, wheel and harmonium. And they make it sound good too! From a concert at the Steinkjer Festival, Norway 2009.

Accompanying my wife (on and off-stage) has always been a pleasure! Playing the keyboards on Indian Classical is tough though.

The Church Organ or Harmonium to be more accurate in St.Augustine church at Snave in Kent is now showing signs of age and neglect.

The church itself although still consecrated stands redundent and only holds the occasional service possibly about once a year
