how to become greater

Looks as if hardships are the norm for this guy.

And the "travellers advise" to Americans visiting London:

Hard. The British slang definition of hard is somebody who is ready to take on anyone or anything in a fight. Usually a self-inflicted state of mind after several pints of British ale, a hard man is someone to be avoided.

Even with these remnants of the logging industry from the 1800's, its hard to imagine that two man teams would cut up to 100 trees per day over the winter months. With multiple teams, there wouldn't have been much forest left standing at that rate. It wasn't easy on the men either - they would consume up to 7000 calories per day. The bigger men could lose 30-40 lbs of weight over the winter cutting season. Thank goodness for environmentalists and conservation efforts.

Gotta love estate cars!

"It's been a hard day's night

And I've been working like a dog"

Looking roughly west from the summit of Ceann Garbh, the northern summit of Foinaven. Having gained the ridge, we had a mostly leisurely if very long stroll to the southern end in superb weather, eventually picking up the stalker's path through Bealach Horn and ending up at the road south of Loch Stack some time after midnight. We didn't see another soul all day.

The Isle of Lewis can be faintly seen in the far distance on the horizon in the left half of the image.

There has been one to two feet of snow in the Dales, much of which has melted. Still snow showers in the West today

We are having unseasonably warm weather by arctic standards. Ice frost has been a frequent occurrence because the river hasn't frozen yet.

Being rocks, they were stubborn and hard

It wasn’t their style to drop their guard

They stood there for years along

With a sense that something was wrong

No words were ever said,

Not even a gesture made

They had to ‘bridge’ this communication gap

But how? no one could wear a thinking cap

Finally,

One of them was somewhat brave.

He looked up and agreed to ‘wave'

Not sure what this represents but seems to be a metaphor for how hard work is in Thailand

Arapaho Peaks (north peak, 13,502 ft/ 4115 m, south peak 13,397 ft) and Mount Albion (12,575 ft / 3,833 m) on a cloudless, blustery summer sunrise- the wind was gusting to 45 mph (20 m/s). Getting the tripod to hold steady was challenging; I adjusted the ISO up from my usual 100 to 400. The large partially shaded snowfield between the Arapaho Peaks covers the Arapaho Glacier, purported to be the southernmost glacier in the Rockies.

It always was hard for me to believe SOO ever dabbled in FM power but they had a group of five H12-44's that lasted nearly 20 years. The last of them was off the roster in fall 1974 about one year before I started shooting 35mm slides. Every shot of them I've ever seen found them in the Twin Cities and that is where Tom Smart shot 316 on May 31, 1968.

You keep telling me that I am free to go

But I am addicted to you

It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie

When I'm not here, you're alone

Can you walk by your own?

Don't you lie, don't you lie, don't you lie

And I think you should know

That I won't let you go

It was like a million times

I'm singing a lullaby

And I think you should know

That I won't let it go

I thought that I was enough

But I don't wanna say goodbye

And I think you should know

It was hard to say

Every minute that we spent together

Doesn't matter for you

It's a lie, it's a lie, you're a liar

Every time you wanna walk the door

I don't blame you

I don't blame you

And I think you should know

That I won't let go

It was like a million times

I am singing a lullaby

And I think you should know

That I won't let you go

I thought that it was enough

But I don't wanna say goodbye

And I think you should know

And I think you should know

Hard for me, hard for me

It's hard for me, hard for me, hard for me

It's hard for me, hard for me, hard for me

It's hard for me

I had probably one of my hardest woodland wanders to date last Friday. It rained all morning from moderate, to heavy downpour, I never had a break. To top that the bracken was extra thick, which was surprising given the dry summer we’ve just had. I was back in my favourite woodland, the first time since April and although I’ve caught this wood in the height of summer last year the undergrowth was much heavier going. Every composition was the same process, stand the tripod, balance the umbrella, unpack the camera, etc etc. Just after I took this photo I was exhausted and soaked right though my waterproofs 3 hours into my morning, I was ready for home. I plonked myself down with my back against a pine tree with the umbrella and tripod as a makeshift shelter and had a coffee. Now with the energy to head back I slowly made my way back through the wood to the car, taking the odd image as I went, tired but happy with my mornings work.

I will, I can, I will!

Says he who means to win.

For there's no power this side of death

Can shut and keep him in.

I will, I can, I will!

Is the slogan that never fails.

And there's no power on land or sea

To keep down that man's sails.

I will, I can, I will!

Has turned the world around

And saved a people many times

When others thought them, down.

I will, I can, I will!

Obstacles I'll defy!

For there's no power can beat a man

Who never will say, "die."

Hard times for some means collecting bottles and cans for the next meal, a sad reality. Photo taken along an old railway corridor.

But solid and safe to sit on.

An old saying....Dope will get you through times of no money, better than money will get you through times of no dope. Judging by the empty bucket. I'd say this guy's got neither.

Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) is one of the most common grassland breeding sparrows in the United States; it nests over much of the North American continent and winters over the southern states and Mexico. The species is highly variable in plumage and bill size from different areas of the country and a number of subspecies are recognized.

The Savannah Sparrow’s name sounds like a nod to its fondness for grassy areas, but this species was actually named by famed nineteenth century ornithologist Alexander Wilson for a specimen collected in Savannah, Georgia.

Raising young is hard work: a female Savannah Sparrow must gather 10 times her weight in food to feed herself and her young during the 8 days they are in the nest.

The "Ipswich Savannah Sparrow," a subspecies that breeds on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, is nearly 50 percent heavier than most other Savannah Sparrow subspecies. It is the palest race, and is found in winter in sand dunes along the Atlantic Coast. It was formerly considered a separate species.

In many parts of the species' range, especially in coastal areas and islands, Savannah Sparrows tend very strongly to return each year to the area where they hatched. This tendency, called natal philopatry, is the driving force for differentiation of numerous Savannah Sparrow subspecies.

The oldest known wild Savannah Sparrow was at least 6 years, 10 months old. It was banded in Michigan in 1939 and recaptured in the same state in 1945.
