During the Christmas holidays we took the opportunity of free travel once again to visit some neighbouring countries. Our first stop was the capital of Vietnam, the incredibly busy and vibrant city of Hanoi. This was the scene as we stepped outside of our hotel on the first morning. We stayed in the heart of the Old Quarter - the busiest and perhaps most interesting part of the city

The only graffiti i came across in Hanoi

Typical village landscape in Hanoi. Presently threathened by large urban developments at the periphery of the city. The city has been built on large water areas that are progressively reduced to residual water ponds as the one that appears on this picture.

Another house that fascinated me in Vietnam was this house along one of Hanoi's oldest streets. The yellow French architecture, the shutters, and the unkempt plants all combine to tell a tale of the French colonial rule of Vietnam which ended in 1954. As I have mentioned before, it pleases me that homes of that period still remain.

These were oppressive times for the Vietnamese, but a romantic time for the French. The Vietnamese have woven the old buildings into their new Vietnam. Along with the homes, the red lanterns have a history too. Legend has it that lanterns were introduced by Chinese people who came and settled down in the country in the 16th century. The immigrants hung lanterns in front of their houses to remember their home country.

Be aware of scammers. There are some who either want you to pay a fee to enter train street, or tell you that you can only enter it when you visit their bar.

Train street is free.

Go there a take photos from photographs who take photos from photographs.

While the train street is beautiful with all the lanterns, it is a special experience to be in the train passing though the train street, its like riding through a firework

Due to a lack of land, this narrow street in Hanoi, Vietnam was built up along a busy passenger rail line. Now that it's become an attraction, people along the street have opened up several small cafes on the side of the tracks where you can have a drink as a train blasts by just inches away. We were there about an hour at dusk and two trains went through.
